Yeah, I'm leaning towards making the whole game free with a limited number of characters. I'm going to put in Ads but in a way that is not too intrusive. Then for IAP, players will be able to unlock expansion content like a pack of extra characters, an expansion to the campaign, etc.

If it doesn't work out well, I can always just create a new game that has all the expansion content and release it as a premium title.

I was a big fan of how Mass Effect 3 handled purchasing characters. When you bought one, you got the character plus a short side campaign that fleshes out that character's story.

If I've been waiting to get deep into both, should I start with DR1 or DR2?

You can do either as the stories are separate. DR1 is easier slightly so perhaps start with that one? There should be a big update for it available today or tomorrow as Apple just approved it.

I already have both so the App Store doesnt show me the current cost of the two in a bundle (edit: It actually does and it has a saving of a few bucks)
But if it is a good price you are only depriving yourself of the two best turn based tactical rpg's on iOS if you dont get both of them.
And the dev is one of the most responsive and approachable devs in the iOS games industry that I have had the pleasure of dealing with through TouchArcade.

If you want top quality, full price games with no iap rubbish then this is the one developer that deserves your support.
    Just buy both! #

But if you are asking if you need to start with DR1 to understand DR2 then the answer is definately no.

I own both, the question is which to play through first.

I wish the AppStore let you purchase apps without having to immediately download them. I'd love to buy both of these games just to have them in my collection and to support this awesome developer, but I don't currently have the space on my phone. :(

Pretty sure you can just buy them and then just cancel the install? Can anyone confirm?

I'd say Demon's Rise 2 is the better game but with a steeper learning curve. The first 3 or 4 levels are easy but then the difficulty curve spikes up quickly. Demon's Rise 1 has some more traditional character classes (and many really strange ones) and I'd say the first 7 levels or so are pretty easy. Either way, jump into either ... they both have their own distinct style and flavour and with the recent updates are on a near identical level in terms of quality.

Yes, you can. I do it all the time.

By the way, I have to buy DR2. It is devs like you that deserve support.

    Game update

Posted updates review in Apple Store, 5 stars. I love the new updates for both games. Especially the non responsive touch controls. Keep up the great work!

    Thanks a lot.

I'm working on the Android version now so there might be a bit of a gap between this and the next update. If others could please update their reviews, that would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding future plans for DR2, I'm thinking of two possibilities:

1 - Add a full expansion with 10 - 15 new campaign levels that extend the story slightly.
The story would revolve around the player characters returning to the north after being freed from the prison with the black dragon and demon sword. The battles would be very difficult ones in which the player would be fighting the various factions in the north that are trying to fill the power vacuum created by the death of Morkarn and the splintering of his army. It would involve Elves, a crusader faction and various former leaders of Morkarn's army that are trying to vie for power. The player would be dealing with both the Elven and Crusader faction and crushing resistance from the other demonic warriors and re-unite Morkarn's army.

2 - Leave the game as is and focus on finishing Strike Team and Temple of Shadows. Add minor updates and possibly some bonus characters as a reward for finishing the campaign.

Let me know your thoughts. If I go with option 1, it would be a paid expansion pack that would be unlocked via an IAP.

I think you should do whatever's more profitable for you. Because it's hard to be an independent software developer. The problem with a DLC for DR2 is that by definition it's only going to sell to a subset of the people who buy DR2. A new title could potentially have a breakout audience.

    "non responsive touch controls"
you being sarcastic, miss typed or really think they are NON responsive?

    and @WaveLightGames and DaviddesJ
I would go for option 1. Because it is intended to be much harder to play and has limited content relevant to DR2 I highly doubt it would be attractive to non DR2 players, whereas people who own the main game will probably jump at the chance to buy more content.
Besides you have two more new games in the works to attract both DR players and new ones.

Now with all that said I hope you don't end up overloaded with too many projects. That has the possibility of you releasing an inferior product which would be terrible as I believe you have a current following of gamers who really appreciate the quality of your two released games so far.

No, he's quite serious and accurate. One of the previous updates actually added a bug where two sections of the screen would not recognize touch inputs to the tiles / units underneath. It was really irritating and a lot of work to debug but this patch fixes it.

I'm confused. Option 2 was to work on the new games and get them out sooner.

Wave light, I've owned DR1 since right after it first came out and bought DR 2 within a day or two of release. They are both excellent games. I have gotten hours of enjoyment from them. Thank you for that.

With regard to what is a nice/reasonable free to play model. "The Pirate Hunt - Caribbean" hit the sweet spot for me. Free to download and play but with pop up ads you can turn off via a small purchase. I enjoyed the game so paid to turn them off. Once that's done there is the option to periodically watch the ads for a small amount of ingame money. You can also purchase "special" slightly buffed ships as IAP along with some other assorted goodies, none of which are required to complete or enjoy the game.

Ive also tried several games that provide a level or two free to play so you can try the game out prior to making a purchase. I like concept as well.

I may not be the best judge though as I'm fairly new to the mobile gaming world and have mostly played more or less full price games such as a few of the Trese Bros. titles, Panzer Corps and Rome Total War.

I bought Demon Rise 1 and decided to play DR2 later. Any tips for a good DR1 team that is strong and overall OP and i can finish the game easier?
