They've mentioned before in interviews they need more RAM. The iPhone 4 and iPad 2 with 512 might be enough, but I'm guessing they'd wait until the iPod touch is up there too. DDP:R (aka DDP Daifukkatsu or "DFK") isn't all that old, same goes for Espgaluda II...and they already have HD ports to the Xbox 360 so they can output high res sprites no problem (most of it looks prerendered these days). Same goes for Deathsmiles for that matter. About the only one that would probably have a problem is Bug Panic, that one looks all pixel drawn.
You are wrong. The level of commitment from CAVE is excellent. I don't mind the non-retina graphics because it's nostalgic, reminding me of the old arcade-cabinet days. Not to mention the flawless controls on all of their games. Seriously, no other BH game's controls respond with impeccable fluidity like CAVE's. I understand your frustration with lack of retina support, and I would be just as critical on any other developer for not including hi-res graphics. However, CAVE is the Godfather of this genre, and I'm sure there are hardware capability issues that need to be addressed before "retina-bullet-hell" (CAVE style) can happen.
To correct you, next generation tech devices (iPhone4 and iPad2) are VERY capable of handling high definition graphics on games like this. The processor speeds and internal ram are more than sufficient to handle them. I NEVER doubted the credibility of the game itself or how it plays. If a company chooses not to update their existing games to the new tech capabilities (MANY other companies have updated), then again, it's either laziness or they chose to abandon the game, working solely on new projects. iPhone 4 is almost "old" technology now, with something new in the works. If developers aren't updating or developing in Retina yet, it's not because the hardware can't handle it, it's because they're not willing to devote the efforts.
Additionally, I'll give you some facts to support my claim. Icarus X is a bullet hell shooter in FULL Retina Display. Phoenix is a bullet hell shooter in FULL Retina Display. WAVE is a bullet hell shooter in FULL Retina Display. ISUD is a bullet hell shooter in FULL Retina Display. While I'm not saying these are better games than Caves, what I am saying is the technology is MORE than capable of handling TONS of onscreen items in full HD Retina Display.
Strange facts... three of those don't support retina. I have both WAVE and ISUD so I know for sure those don't, and the Phoenix dev recently said in the game's topic that retina was coming in the future.
Yeah, Icarus-X is the only one that has Retina Display... And really, what games have the amount of bullets that a Cave game does? There's just SO much going on in such a small space, it's crazy. Phoenix has quite a bit of bullets... But the graphical style isn't really an issue, where-as Cave's games are saturated in style... Cave, being the amazing company that they are, I can't see why they would deny us of HD gameplay, if they were able to... Especially since they've got the games on Xbox360... But like others, I don't really care if it's retina or not, it's freakin Cave, on our iDevices! I'll take it any way I can get it... Though I won't deny that the idea of HD Cave on our little iPods is the stuff dreams are made of... =oP
Just compare the backgrounds and visual effects of any of those shooters to the Cave ones... Those endlessly looping pre-rendered backgrounds are far less complex.
Yeah had done an online search for iOs retina bullet hell, something like that and a few of those came up. I assumed some were considering "high quality" the same as retina. I only saw "Retina Display" listed on Icarus-X as well. Still, it's enough to show bullet hell can be pretty without a hitch. Just depends on the level of dedication from the developer. I read through one of the Dodonpachi threads and noted someone said it hitches occasionally even on an iPod 4th gen. While I understand the complexity of the onscreen debacle going on, there are a lot of variables to cause hitching. What was running in the background, iOs version, when was the last hard boot, etc. I think being the excellent developer cave is, they can manipulate the programming code to play nicely with retina for next gen devices. I just believe it comes down the the commitment level of the developer. Again, I won't argue that bullet hell doesn't get any finer than Cave, but as stated iPhone4 is soon to be bested by new technology, so I'd like to see them keeping up with the curve...
I'll put this simply: you're full of shit. You keep saying it comes down to the commitment level of the developer (which is already nonsense since it's Cave we're talking about) and then you provide no evidence to back it up other than to cite the rate of Apple's ridiculous, money-grubbing incremental upgrades. The fact is that Cave's games have FAR more sprites on screen at any given time than any others of the genre on the platform. The resolution of the game is the most moronic and shallow reason not to purchase I've ever heard and, quite frankly, I would much rather they put out more fantastic games (quite possibly with retina display in the future) than dedicate their time to making their already essentially flawless games just a little bit shinier to make everyone with a 4th gen feel better about themselves. I would say that consistently making the best shmups BY FAR on the platform would qualify as "keeping up with the curve."
Your response makes you sound like an iPod 3rd gen user who can't afford to upgrade so you just get angry at those who have. Oh wait, you really are. Don't take it so personal, it'll be okay. Next time read my responses, stating there's nothing wrong with their games or performance. I clearly said the company is too lazy to upgrade to Retina or has abandoned the games to work on new stuff, take your pick. You can bitch and whine all you want, but that's reality. Unlike you, I upgraded to an iPhone4 specificallly for Retina Display and faster processing speed. Many developers stayed on par upgrading their games accordingly. If I'm going to spend $5-$9 for a game on my next gen device, you bet I want it to be in Retina Display taking advantage of that next gen technology. If I decide I don't want to buy a game because the developer won't update it, that's my decision. Who are you to judge my decision making? A nobody. At least I supported my standpoint with facts and not just useless babble. If you think the next gen devices can't run those old games in Retina, then you really don't know shit.
@Creepshow: Seriously, I don't know what your problem is. If you don't like these games then din't buy them. No need to complain on a forum Cave won't visit (try their forums instead). The devs said several times that they need more rom for these kinda games (sprite heavy as they are), simple as that. Also don't need to be arrogant, mate.
Agree with the above. His posts are getting boring, don't like them don't buy them. Some people are never happy. There's plenty of dire bug ridden games out there to really moan about if you want
Good post and I totally agree to a point. I'm not trying to complain, all I did was offer my opinion commenting on someone elses wish for Retina. Original post: It's just my opinion and I feel strongly about it. I do think they could make it happen on the next gen hardware. (iP4/iPad) It sounds like you've read or are able to prove otherwise and that's the kind of mature response I'd like to see. Not the childish "You're full of shit!" As mentioned 40 times in this thread now, I like Cave and don't think anyone can make a better shooter. I've never complained about the way their games, perform or control. I just have certain standards for my $ spent. Like Psj just said, a simple "You don't like it don't buy it" is fine. Not trying to throw this thread off topic either, so I'll leave it alone. But I will say I hope Deathsmiles will be in Retina, because this is one I definitely want to pick up.
LOL Possible scenarios: 1. They read every post. Game delayed. 2. They don't read the posts and therefore not understand public desire to play the game. They don't feel pressured and continues to make refinements. Game delayed. 3. They don't read the post and keep working on schedule. Game arrives on time (or possibly earlier). 4. Release information and date obscured by random posts.
hey glad to see some new post on this. sucks that its not the devs announcing a release date. i honestly got tired of waiting so i bought a copy for my 360 and its AMAZING. i beat the game the first time playing the original pixelated to hell version before i realized that the 360 version and 1.1 version were the ones with updated graphics. i didnt mind though,i was too busy watching the hellstorm of bullets. man this game is great. kinda short but tons of replay value, like all cave games. hope the mobile version is as good as the console.
Seriously, unless the month May is still "spring" or they have been talking about spring in southern hemisphere, this game has slipped. Anyway, I can understand the unfortunate earthquake has hindered developments of the Japanese game industries as a whole.
Summer doesn't start until June so CAVE still has plenty of time. Besides, they don't let games "slip" after working hard on them for months. They would tell us if the game was cancelled. And I hope that happy face was a typo
