Game Impressions Too dark, controls arent very tight, only drive and shoot, too short, too light on content for 5 dollars, a waste of money that is...
Something not obvious in many of the comparisons with Reckless Racing is that Death Rally has a real campaign mode, with unlockables, stuff to work towards, and progression. Reckless Racing, on the other hand, has great multiplayer. Should Death Rally be endowed with such, it would probably shoot way past Reckless Racing in longevity. My first strong impression of this game is that it is a good long-term investment. More tracks, weapons and cars are on the way, as is multiplayer. That sealed the deal for me. Facing other humans in this game (especially online) might just be one of the best multiplayer experiences for iOS so far.
For us old fogies who played the original PC version, are the tracks similar the original ones? Also, how many tracks are there? I believe the original had 19, but ala Reckless Racing half of them were the same tracked going backwards. I am looking closely at this game, but found in the re-release of the PC game it didn't age as well for me. The graphics on this look great though.
Gaaa....this thread has me bouncing back and forth whether to purchase or not. Keep the comments coming guys. Appreciated!
Game Impressions Yeah, I was trying to remain critical and objective... But it is no use. This is GOOD. Yeah, there is a lack of content. Compared to Mission Europa, The Quest, GT Racing: Motor Academy or Aralon. Compared to a normal iOS title, not soo much. Perhaps a little. But I'm not even sure about that. The game does have a career mode with unlockable weapons and cars, and a really charming upgrade system. The idea is that new cars and weapons are built from parts you find during the races, while upgrading armour, handling, speed and weapon effectiveness is done through prize money and a nice interface. The content might still be on the light side in relation to the price, though, but the already given promise of multiplayer, AND new tracks, challenges, weapons and cars promises to expand the longevity of this game far beyond the 5 dollar mark. If the multiplayer addition goes down without any silly business (such as only local multiplayer, multiplayer becomes a 25 dollar IAP, etc), I'd gladly pay 5 dollars just for that, without the already existing career mode. (Here's to the hope they either integrate multiplayer with single player, so that earnings and parts go towards the same "character", or that multiplayer at least uses the same progression system, with prize money and car/weapon parts, instead of being just random races with all equipment unlocked.) This is kinda the classic port I had hoped Speedball would be: packed with action, extremely easy to pick up and play in just a few minutes but also immersive enough to last for an hour of constant playtime, very skill-based, VERY pretty, reimagined for iOS (in short: had I not known, I could not tell it was a port in any way), accessible, but also with the promise of a lastnig appeal through multiplayer and new content. I'm calling this one of the top 3 or 5 fun iOS titles of 2011.
This happens to me too. If there are other cars ahead or along with, it's easier for me to get the sense of direction. I still hope for an accelerator which can make gameplay more enjoyable and exciting.
Yep hopefully there'll be an update with a small map or something. But really enjoying it, i keep doing the first race over and over to get my car 'suped up' but its great fun hanging back in last place, then trying to kill the next few cars, finishing 3rd but get a lot of money due to killing opponents. But yeah 'some' of the tracks are hard to manage without seeing opponents. Great looking game though, superb graphics. Obviously on some of the tracks the markings really help you out where to go but would prefer some more (or a small map) But very happy with my purchase, played it a lot last night and having a quick go at lunch today I actually loved the beginning of it, i stupidly reset it and tried again (to escape the police) but then realised 'ahem' youre 'meant' to get caught as its part of the plotline.
Amazing! My first race I did donuts the whole time while trying to wrap my head around the controls, 2nd race I came in 6th but at least I passed the finish line, third race I had already made some upgrades to my car and I got my first kill, still no where near to finishing in the top three. 4th race I got third and 5th race I got 1st. This game is a ton of fun, the races are quick but full of action, lots of power ups, lots of upgrades, you can take the tight turns or take out your opponents to win. Controls work nice, I got lost on some of the courses but I have a few favorites that I've been repeating so I can fully upgrade my DEATH CAR. Seriously, nothing better then watching the lead car explode from a well placed missile as you fly over the finish line past the smoldering heap. I love Reckless Racing but never played more then one or two races at a time, this was a serious time suck as I kept racing to get more money so I could upgrade my car so I could win more races so I could get more money so I could...Great game, if they keep the updates coming this is definitely worth the investment.
In this otherwise markedly less than realistic game, I actually prefer the realistic/hardcore approach: learn the tracks by driving them. It only takes one of two tries to get a track down, and the first time I took the lead, I had absolutely no problems finding my way.
I played a few tracks of the original and if my memory serves correct, the ios version has new tracks. You forgot it should be $.99/Free
FWIW I played Reckless Racing when it first came out for about 45 minutes, found it underwhelming, and deleted it. I've never felt compelled to reinstall it. I've already played this more than RR, and find it to be a great fit for the iDevices. Lots of fun, tons of upgrades, the "one more try" factor, it's all here. And amazingly the thread isn't full of people bitching about paying more than 99 cents.
Cool game but my fame level is not updating to Game Center. According to GC I am dead last in fame with a whopping total of 263... I have completed like 85% of the campaign and am at the Big Fish fame level which is 425,000 or so. Definately more than 263. Can't get it to update. Achievements are unlocking fine. I think I have unlocked 28 so far, just this fame thing doesn't appear to be working for me...
I love this version of death rally, but as à major fan of The original i really miss THE list of 100 racers and trying to become number 1 by cleverly choosing THE track when opponents are signing up. Even THE tune of THE original is in There. But apart from the list, everything is great!
Hi there, my first message to say its a wonderful game, a good remake! Oh, and also im the first in "Rift" lap and race time in gamecenter...im famous! xD
Not bad but "Rock N Roll Racing" on the Snes/Super Famicom was much better in my opinion... I wish someone would port that to iOS
If I'm not mistaken there are at least 30 fans of Death Rally who haven't purchased the game yet because the twitter winners haven't been announced.
Great game. I like it quite a lot more than Reckless Racing. The guns and upgradeable cars just make it so much better IMO. The graphics look really nice too. The only downsides are the controls take a bit of getting used to, and it feels a little thin on content. But I'm happy with quality over quantity, and more content will come in updates, so it's all good
Haven't put this game down since yesterday. Are the developers in this thread? I'd think it would be a good idea to add some brighter colour options for the cars in this game. And online multiplayer is a MUST. If that happened, my mind would explode.
