There's an RPG element in permanent upgrades from weapons (and I also unlocked an x% increase to ammo that's upgradeable). I haven't gotten too far in but there are multiple difficulties for each level, with 3 stars per level, per difficulty. Earned stars are used to upgrade equipment, and it takes more stars the further into upgrades u are. A coin currency is earned during playthroughs and as far as I can tell, is used solely to purchase chests - which is how u win weapons and perks. I am unsure yet if there are more weapons and perks than there are spots to equip them. So far I have a hammer, jump (literally a jump button) sub machine gun, and a shotgun, along with the ammo perk.
