That new Qbert game had the same thing, only I think it was $7 a week. But yeah it’s insane. I guess maybe there are subscription whales too? ste86uk likes this. They are pretty much the same as subscriptions... in the end you own nothing and your money gets taken, again and again and again.” I feel really strongly against this subscription craze, yet most people here seem to readily accept it and it’s so frustrating. If everyone accepts subscriptions now, then soon subscriptions will be the ONLY choice. The same thing happened with iap’s. I know some people here are fine with subscriptions, just like some people are fine with consumable iap, online only, server based games, unfair gacha or 17000 ads per second. Whenever I see that a developer has added that stuff to their game, I know they have compromised their original vision, and that monetisation has become more important than gameplay. I agree that the AppStore needs to find a fairer way for all developers to earn the money that they deserve, but my opinion is that any monetisation method mentioned in this post should never be included in the solution. Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #5 Ringerill, Oct 23, 2019 What was said above is a warning message we should all pay attention to and spread if possible... The worst is that it is already happening with previously great titles. Look how the Zenonia titles have evolved or even what a mess the latest Crimson Heart 2 is. IAPs, subscriptions, lootboxes (sorry, surprise mechanics...), adds, constant internet connections, all of this is rarely justified for the game. Subscriptions can be useful for games that require to pay for big servers and keep updating the game regularly with new content. I can accept adds for F2P games when they are not too intrusive and not mandatory but there must be an add removal function (this would basically just make the game premium). Internet connection is of course logical for online games. Gatcha mechanics (lootboxes, boosters and so on)should be ok if it is a free gimmick of the game. However, every time I see these things, they don't make the game better and most of the time make it even worse... Servers will for sure stop after a certain amount of time, either because the company will cease to exist or the game will not be maintained anymore or a new version will come, and BAM, you will never be able to play the game anymore, even if it didn't have any online features anyway... Sometime they tell you that it is for storing your data but why would you need that when you can store it on iCloud or Google Cloud (or locally) by default. Sometimes it's too justify Timers, but that is a totally different thing and it is more than debatable in a game as well because appart from artificially inflating the life-length of the game and hindering your process, it doesn't do much. Gatcha mechanics, Subscriptions, IAPs and the like are almost always here to make you advance steadily and if you refuse them, the game is basically an endless grind just to make a slim progress. And most of the time the packs you will open will be unfair unlike a clear IAP stating what you will get immediately upon payment. I don't mind when the game come free with adds and can be made add-less by paying. IAPs offering cosmetics, or DLCs are fine too because it's a nice way to support the devs if you really want to. But don't tell me that the following has never happened to you: You download a F2P game. You play it, unlock several elements as you progress and when you make a big unlock, you are offered a small IAP of 1-2$ to have a special item of high rarity. And you probably have no idea how valuable it is so they say that it is discounted or just unique with a golden/shining effect. Then after you play more, you reach harder levels so you have to upgrade your stuff. This is when the timers come into play because you have to wait 5 minutes before the upgrade is complete. But they offer you some premium currency to speed it up (if you couldn't wait for 5 minutes, wait until you have to spend 24 hours...). Then you manage to beat that hard level and you probably find a box/pack. You open it and find a semi-rare item. You discover now that to advance further, you will need to open these things but it will cost premium currency or a large amounts of farmable ressources. Soon will come a point in the game, around ~2 hours of gameplay generally, where you are blocked, you depleted your ressources for now and have to wait until your upgrades are finished. You could always watch an add to speed it up, or buy some premium currency to instantly finish it, or maybe get a subscription that will accelerate the timers by 20-50%. At this point, how many dishonest things have you noticed? And this is just the beginning of the game where grinding is still enjoyable and you discover new things. Soon you will just be chasing some numbers like HP, Attack, Gold/hour, etc... But to make it more bearable, they will put an Energy system so that you will feel like it has been planned and you would have to wait anyway. Just by seing the Revives offered in this game, I assume that you will encounter hard and unfair levels. You will not want to waste your precious Energy (even if it doubled via the Subscription) so Revives will seem like the only way to bypass hard maps. Doubled Gold means that you will not have enough money unless you grind non-stop. And my god, they even dared to put the word "Forced" for adds. I don't even want to imagine an add popping out before beginning a level or finishing it... Only one picture, and I am already unwilling to even download the game because it says everything. Son of Anarchy summed everything up pretty well on the evolution of the app store. Games are generally higher quality now than they were before but I LOVED it when the app store was just filled with premium games. It was like a giant treasure trove. A new Zenonia like the original would be amazing but look what Gamevil had turned into now. That's why I dig around so hard to find a nice premium game or even an extremely fair f2p game that I can just put a bit of money into it to enjoy it then maybe more if I've really enjoyed my time with it.
