I mean, let's bring some competition of similar genre into the mix: Dead Cells ($8.99) or Pascal's Wager ($6.99). The first one offers crazy replay-ability value, hundreds of hours of gameplay, items, secrets etc. The latter has fantastic story, different playable characters, boss fights etc. I tried your game. It has no story whatsoever. No tutorial. The main character just appears out of the blue on the molo and you're thrown into it without any explanation what to do, how and why. There is no settings except for antialiasing checkbox. The game barely runs on regular iPad 6th gen 2018. The basic UI looks like work in progress, it's just A, B and OK button. The same goes goes for combat. One button, one hit. No abilities, no combos. Terrible animations on top of poor frame rate. I can barely see the almost pitch black enemies. The whole "game" feels like alpha build. Like engine test. Obviously there are performance issues on much more powerful devices. I don't understand how could anyone pay $10 for this (except for judging it by the screenshots maybe) and after a brief test run wouldn't request a refund. Especially in comparison with cheaper and much more polished alternatives I mentioned earlier. yankeeblue000 and editali like this. The game has no tutorial and story (maybe there's one?) 2. It is not well optimized. Let me put it this way. Imagine your PC has a low spec, but u try to run a heavy graphics game on it. Yes it feels that way. I think the game that does this right for this genre is Grimvalor 3. The landscape is fixed. Would be better if it could auto rotate to another side of the screen 4. The touch controller is a bit chunky. I will try the game with physical controllers. 5. Like @macplash said, it is hard to compete with those big boys. yankeeblue000 and editali like this. editali Member Jan 1, 2020 19 5 3 Male #9 editali, Feb 29, 2020 @macplash @Makara Nou Thank you for your precious reviews and tips, some of them are fixable, some are bound to game design. I have not yet priced it that much, it is a suggestive price, I will justify it accordingly, thanks for tips. Darkness Trap tells story in a silent story telling manner, so during time, it exposes some part of story. I.e. The girl is a stranger to town, she comes from outside world, she has no idea about the town and whatever happened there and the rest of story will be revealed further. I will fix it, thank you for mention it. I will work on it if there is any possible settings, do you have any suggestion? Actually, there are many combo actions that player can make, I need to show it in tutorial (that I will make). Currently I'm working on it. Unfortunately, iOS 13 doesn't let to load big levels (due to some new memory management policy) and streaming assets on-the-fly is also expensive for me for now, so I have to keep it in chunks of levels. It may be due to performance issue and low frame rate. So far, thank you guys for tips and reviews, if there is any other problem or suggestion I will be appreciate it. But this kind of feedback should've been brought to you during the beta. Successful launch is very important for the new brand. Lack of proper testing and tweaking before going live might result in bad reviews even though you're giving the game for free atm. And from personal experience I know once there's a negative review on the App Store (because of the issues during the launch), it usually stays that way. It's quite rare for players to go back over time and change their reviews after there's a bunch of updates released. You're asking about suggestions for settings. I'm not sure actually. Depends on what can make the game playable. Because it isn't, in current state. Stable frame rate should be your main goal. Again, beta comes to mind. Different testers, different devices. Hence, valuable feedback and way for improvement. You can't ask customers of the final product to test it so you can make adjustments. Some tweaks here and there? Sure. But this doesn't sound like the case. I appreciate you'll add the tutorial. But again. It should've been there already. I understand the story can be told continuously, piece by piece throughout the game. Yet, some introduction is in order. It might be fine to figure things out, but at least set the mood. Set the environment, time frame maybe, anything. I don't know. I'm not the developer. But there are some basic rules I'd expect to be followed by common sense. It just feels like you skipped a step or two. If this was an upcoming games category, it'd be different. But since you're here with the final game I don't know what else I can do except to wish you a good luck. So, yeah. yankeeblue000 likes this. editali Member Jan 1, 2020 19 5 3 Male #11 editali, Feb 29, 2020 You are totally right, but as a solo developer with very tight budget I could not reach many game testers before launch, I had to put energy on design and development, that's why I tried it this way. Bringing you the valuable feedback you’re craving for. I can’t speak for the rest, but there’s a reason TouchArcade forum has a certain structure. There’s a specific section for developers, upcoming games etc. If I’m browsing forum with newly released games, I’m expecting a presentation of finished product. And most importantly a discussion about the gameplay. Maybe an exchange of ideas how to progress smoothly. Tips and tricks. Feedback as well - sure. Within a reasonable boundaries. Imagine there’s an article on TouchArcade’s main page. Perhaps a review. It’s customary the link to game’s thread is added there as well. Now imagine going there and instead of reading about what I’d expect it contains a bug report. You know what I mean? But hey, it’s not about me. All I’m saying is releasing an unfinished game could hurt you. For the reasons I already mentioned. Especially if you’re a solo developer. It’s not about where we’re discussing game’s flaws and potential solutions. It’s about either it should be already released or not. And again, I’m not the developer. I don’t know jack shit about releasing a game. You already have my utmost admiration and respect for that! I’m just trying to give you an insight from different perspective. From a hands-off third party bystander, if you will. And for the reason I stated previously I’m rooting for you. ———————- EDIT: @editali don’t worry about wasting my time and energy. Instead, let me give you an example of how would it be different if I’m invested in the process. Its work in progress stage to be more specific. editali likes this. editali Member Jan 1, 2020 19 5 3 Male #13 editali, Feb 29, 2020 @macplash Thanks a million for your priceless tips and reviews, you opened eyes of a game developer even though you are not a game developer. So I tried the game. Took me like 1 hour and a half to finish it. And there were quite few problems on the way. Like bugs that need to be fixed. 1.They are places that you enter and are just big blur and you can’t go back, move or see anything so you need to restart the game 2. When your on the stairs or on top of the wall you can actually fall down below the map /this one happened a lot/ 3. When you’re fighting more than 3 monsters, when they hit it it’s like a stun effect and the only action that your allowed is to attack 4. The 2nd and 3th icon for skills aren’t working properly you need to press them multiple times until it does and it’s still 20/80% if your lucky. 5. On few of the stages when you attack you lag and neither the monster and the character is moving but they are both receiving damage 6. I picked up few times skills but when I checked the inventory they weren’t there. Honestly it’s not a bad game but this is like Early Beta version. And other people already posted about different issues that the game currently has. If I were you I would first fix the problems before I release it. Everyone will be expecting a finished product, you cannot charge money at the current state of the game.
