I'm kind of in two minds about it. I play it occasionally, but if there was more choice on iOS then maybe I wouldn't. I prefer set levels with boss fights you can memorize to endless random play. Although sticking an endless mode into a game with stages is also good. It's a bit of an evolution of both genres and I'm not so uptight that I'll complain about it, but generally the closer a game is to Touhou Project the more I'll enjoy it. I spent many happy hours with that series.
Oh, you mean as an actual mode all by itself? Now we are cooking with GAS! I originally suggested that idea just because it made sense to me that if grazing helps fill the gauge that grazing could help maintain it as it's being fired, but your idea is most delicious. Sunny, get back in here!
*cough* indeed Not sure what the benefit would be of adding the Trance bar mechanic on top of that, the essence is to keep grazing either way. I love the look of all those circles around the player and Boss craft, but do they also have a function?
Thanks to SyntheticVoid for that awesome (and informational!) write up! for those asking about Grazing, I haven't seen this mentioned, but there is an audible click when you graze a bullet. it's hard to notice at times, but kinda reminds me of a geiger counter when you graze a lot at once, haha. at first i thought the inner circle was the grazing limit, but then I realized my grazing counter wasn't going up nearly as fast as I thought it should be, then I noticed the clicks. it seems to be just outside the perimeter of your ship, more so on the sides than the front and back. oh, and if anyone is digging the soundtrack as much as I am, check out Sithu Aye. every time I put this game down, his latest album "Invent the Universe" is stuck in my head, as it is pretty similar to the Blankfield compositions, and rocks pretty damn hard. the album is online (link above) for "Name your price", but you can stream it as much as you want. I don't have anything to do with him, just love his music.
From what i see, the large circle around the player avatar is the magnet range for pickups in Classic mode.
I believe if you kill enemies within the outer circle, it increases the multiplier. Not 100% sure though...
Hadn't noticed this, but usually playing without sound :X I did notice the white sparks flying off the ship when successfully grazing, but I hardly have time looking down to see if it's working Thanks for the info on the circles, any benefit to being in the enemy boss circles?
I only just today played without sound, and the experience (in my opinion, of course) is MUCH better with sound. Sunny's not kidding when he recommends headphones. the soundtrack to this game is incredible. edit: and about the boss circles, I haven't tested this, but they might be signifying the zones where you get more tokens. I've noticed you get more from bosses when you're closer, so that might be something to try on my next run. edit2: tested, and that seems to be the case. although it's to be noted that bosses don't always have those circles around them. one phase of the level 5 boss they just didn't show up. might be a bug, who knows.
Due to what seemed to be a bug, I reinstalled to start my XP progression again, worked my way back up, but the same thing happened again. It jumps immediately from "Colonel" x/1billion to "Ace" with an empty bar that says max level, disallowing future upgrades. Is this a bug or just bad UI? Is anyone able to upgrade past 9 points total?
I had this same issue, but i think Colonel is the last step before Ace. there aren't any achievements for unlocking ranks between colonel and ace, so the only thing I think we are missing out on is the achievement for gaining Ace. edit: you actually get the achievement for ace on the next playthrough. but yeah, I'm not sure that gives you the maximum amount of points you'd actually get from Ace or not. taking all the perks down to the minimum available, it leaves 1400 points for customization.
Thanks for the response, dude. I do have 1400pts, so that all that really matters to me; just wanted to make sure I had the full upgrade path available.
Hmmm... Sunny, is there any chance that the original DU or Storm Strikers will get a widescreen update? (Sorry guys, I know youve all got to be a little sick of hearing this question... But once you get a new device, you really notice how much the quarter inch on each side of the screen matters... Im almost wishing I had got a 4S)
You mean in my mode ideas? Well... because they'd be different modes. One requires grazing just to be able to fight back at all, while the other merely punishes you for not using it by limiting you to weak weapons. The idea with the trance bar has a strict minimum amount of grazing you'd need to do before you risk losing your trance and potentially throwing the entire stage, far more of a sudden death scenario.
Level 9 (Ace) is currently the maximum attainable level, with 1400 points to spend. The 1 billion thing is a bug, I wouldn't make the game THAT grindy You guys are bringing up some interesting ideas for the beam/graze mechanics, it might work well in an endless mode (ala phoenix HD)...have to see how the game sells first, down to the wire now financially and so far 90% of the accounts of game center are pirated copies so it's rather uncertain at this point.
Yeah... total bullshit. I found out that one of my co-workers pirates apps, and I freak'n went off on him like he, and he alone, was the reason that video games are going freemium... =o/ Damn shame. Really. I hate to hear that. It's very upsetting.
