The new nano warp has an engine sound. :) As for the update, you'll have to ask Apple since it's in their hands. If you want a preview, just head over to http://whoisdangerous.com and download one of the PC or Mac demos.

Just wanted to chime in and thank the developer of this game, as someone who played Elite on the ZX spectrum to death, I have always been fascinated by 'open world' space simulation, and this certainly scratches an itch I've had on the Ipad format. I'm sure I speak for most here in thanking you for your continued support to this game. Best of luck.

Thanks, Wicro! It's very gratifying to know that old-school Elite players find the game fun and interesting. Hopefully, we can also reach out to those who've never had the pleasure of playing Elite so we can continue the big plans we have for the game.

You can set the game to run at low resolution and features on PC/Mac at the start. In fact, I've played it on an old old Windows XP laptop with crappy graphics and also an old Windows XP desktop, and it actually runs decently. You might want to grab the free demo and give it a try. Otherwise, just hold on tight since I'm sure Apple will approve the update any day now.

I've been waiting patiently for this update to be processed by Apple. They took their sweet time for some reason. I played this game when it first appeared over Xmas and really enjoyed it. Then I lost my save needlessly when I got my 4S. I've been waiting to start playing again with this update.

Thank you so much devs ! Congrats and I hope you make some dough with this game. From another old Elite player from the 80's !!

The new update is great! It really pushes the game into a territory of (at least partial, given the complexity of the game, and the resulting thousands of issues that probably must arise from creating the most complex iOS game so far) high polish and shine!

Most significantly of the fixes and additions, thanks to improved UI, better controls, and possibly changes to ship handling and physics (?), that dogfighting sensation is there at last, and I'm off to find that faction with the specialized manual targeting ship :)

One rather small thing (that might possibly be easy to fix): Might we beseech you to turn the first splash screen sideways? :) The artwork is very nice, but compressed into portrait mode it really does not do the game justice, or give a solid first impression ;)

This is embarassing but I have had the game for quite some time now and I have never been able to get through the tutorial. The combat completely baffles me. I can never figure out how to engage with the three enemies that I am supposed to take out in any manner I choose. I need some kind of step by step guide that I can refer to while I execute each step, pause, and then execute the next one.

This game makes me feel like my grandmother probably would if she were trying to build a website or something...

How do you want to fight? There are 3 main ways.

Dogfighting: Manual targeting, along with lasers, gravity bombs and such.

Missiles: Webbers, using the orbit type of flying, and obviously, missiles ;)

Turrets: Webbers help, using the keep-away type of flying, and turrets ;)

Missiles and turrets use the automated flying controls over the manual stick.

These are the core 3 that you'll use for combat. Missiles and Turrets can be used together without much change in how combat runs since both are pretty automated. Lasers and the associated can also be used with missiles and turrets with manual flight, but some things can cause drops in damage output (Transversal, relative speeds etc.)

What's your combat style? I personally prefer the missiles and turrets, since I have poor reflexes.

Generally I prefer dogfighting but I am intrigued by the other possibilities this game offers. The trouble is that I can't keep the order of operations for performing those maneuvers straight. As I said, I need some sort of external checklist that I can execute one step at a time, probably over and over until I can remember what to do. I must be doing something wrong because I just get completely screwed up and can't turn the turrets on, can't figure out if I'm orbiting, or what I'm doing, and I can't engage the enemy even just to dogfight, even though I have my throttle all the way up--seems I can never decrease the distance between myself and the three enemies in the tutorial. I can move around the space station but not the enemies.

Ok. I don't have screenshots, so this might take some doing. If I screw up, someone else jump in.

So, the first thing is: There are 3 buttons on the right. F , O , K - Follow, Orbit, Keep at distance. They are the automated flying options. If there is a blue (?) circle around one of them, you are currently in that mode.

    So, for dogfighting:

1.) Be sure you are not in any automated flying mode. This is absolutely critical. If you are, you have no control of where you're flying.

2.) In the tutorial phase: your Laser is the top row, far left icon. If you touch it, it should begin firing.

3.) There should be a contacts area, above the modules on the left. Look for any red colored contacts. Tap the icon that is to the left of the crosshairs on any of them. This should select that ship. If you tap the crosshairs, it locks onto that ship, which is needed for missiles and turrets. You should be able to look at the edges of the screen and see a red dot. Turn towards is, while firing.

4.) Your throttle is on the left of the screen. It looks like red arrows, pointing up. The higher it is on that bar, the faster you will be going. The icons on that bar show the ranges of your various weapons and systems, with the dist text being how far you are from your target. If it is above the icon, it's out of range.

5.) Close with your target ;)

6.) If you start taking hits, turn on your shield recharger to keep your shields up.

7.) In the tutorial: Cali will keep you alive no matter what. This is the best time to practice.

Thanks a lot for that detailed explanation! I think that will be a big help. I was probably messing up some relatively simple part of the process.

I hope it helps. Report back if it does/doesn't and I'll post more if needed!

  16. Ok, I've just DL the update, but I can't play:

Why is the d-pad on the left side?
And the gas pedal just above the turbo? So, when I try to stop, I hit it.

But worst of all, the controls just don't respond. When I put my finger on my iPhone 4, sometimes it moves, sometimes it doesn't. Or moves too much. I can't even pass the tutorial 'cos I can't kill the first enemy.

I think I'm gonna wait to the next update [any chance of making that frakkin engine sound, or at least, an animation -the ship looks like a death toy-?] 'cos the game it's so promising... but nowadays, just unplayable :(

    Awesome update!

Love the new update, especially the refined controls! Am I correct that the texture and lighting issues were not addressed, or did I miss an option?

Thanks, we hope so, too! Sales are still weak to be frank and we're nowhere close to break-even, but hopefully we can get some more reviews and publicity now. We're also going to add a lite and/or free + IAP version to help get the word out.

Glad you like the update! You can buy that ship right off the bat, it's the Poseidon frigate that has the bonuses to lasers and webbing. To get the inertia drive toggle, you'll have to find the faction that grants it. And that toggle is then available to any ship you fly.

We'll see about fixing the portrait mode problem. This came from adding auto-rotation support. Thanks for your feedback!

Don't worry too much about the auto-pilot modes or the sequence of things. Just remember that you need to select and lock a target before you can use a missile or turret against it. Kind of like in Top Gun where the fighter jets need to get a lock before they can fire a missile.

Thanks for posting this step-by-step tutorial for others!

The de facto convention for virtual d-pads is to place them on the bottom left (see Galaxy On Fire) to control movement. Try using the "slide" mode which plops down a d-pad wherever you put your finger down on an empty part of the screen.

Also, there's an option to move the nano warp button to the top of the thrust bar if it is getting in your way.

Try closing all programs and rebooting your iPhone to see if that helps. Also, check out the options. You can change how quickly the d-pad or tilting responds.

We are working on adding auto-aim support in the next update (with configurable options on how much support you want). This should make dogfighting even more fun. We're close to submitting this next update already which includes more camera tweaks and market filtering options.

Thanks! There's two of us at Binary Helix.

Sorry, the shader bug with Unity hasn't been fixed yet, unfortunately. Now that the important issues are fixed, we'll see if we can find a work-around for the shader and iPad 2/iPhone 4S and iOS 5.x.

Well, it's not completely free since there are usually defenders there you had to beat. We could make it a little harder to beat them, but even getting access to those ships doesn't make the game a cakewalk. You'll still need to outfit them correctly. You can't sell them until you get the license for them. You can't route them until you get the Corporate Pilot skill. And of course, you could simply avoid the Explorer perk and pick the Generalist if you want the most challenge. :) Maybe you could explain in greater detail? I'd be curious to hear what others think of the difficulty.

Thanks for the feedback, all! If you have any more ideas on improving the experience, please let us know. We're hard at work on the next update which adds auto-aim support for lasers, more market filtering and module labeling to help newcomers equip their ships better, lots of camera tweaks to make them smoother and track continuously, and an improved orbit mechanic which better incorporates the max thrust available (allowing for more transversal velocity against turrets) and looks even better (the distant object is easier to see).

We hope to submit this next update within a week or two.
