I would have to agree with those who'd be a bit pissed if they release a separate "holiday" release without even having updated the original game once. Angry Birds was out for nearly a year, with frequent and free updates, before they did the Halloween release. Having done that buys you A LOT of goodwill from your customers because you know they care about you as a customer and the game, and not just about making more money.

Yes, 99 cents is extremely little money in the grand scheme of things, but if the Cut the Rope guys do it, it'll come off as being greedy, as if every update from now on is going to be another 99 cents. It's not so much about the money as it is that it just looks bad on their part. I'm sure it would be very successful if they do it, but they would no doubt piss off quite many too (especially considering there were more than a few people upset about the Angry Birds: Halloween release, and that came after all those free updates).

Its funny that you should say that, because each and every one of these oh-so-rational posts about how every developer should give free stuff for a year the way the Angry Birds developers did strikes me as the height of greediness from the poster.

The developers are not obligated to give you anything for your purchase beyond a working game. You already got that.

If they charge 99 cents for every update from now on, that's not greedy, that's getting paid for their work.

The only people it looks bad to are the greedy people on this board who think they are entitled to something for nothing.

    I'd pay $2.99 for a Retina version, nay, $3.99.

Ha! I just KNEW someone was going to make a comment before I could add something I forgot which is that personally, I don't feel like I'm getting gypped if they add nothing more to Cut the Rope. The game is and was worth the 99 cents, no doubt. To say anything else would frankly be moronic. I don't think of myself as being owed anything at all, and I just want to make that clear.

But my point is that Angry Birds is such a huge success because they've been keeping people happy. You are more likely to recommend a game like Angry Birds to your friends, family, etc. when you've been given even more value for your money, and it's been a game you keep playing. It's just like you're more likely to go back to a restaurant if they throw in some free fries every now and then because you're a good customer. Right then the restaurant is "losing" an income from the fries, but in the long run they'll make up for because you'll be back, and you'll tell your friends it's a good place to go to. Would Angry Birds be a hit on the level it is had they not kept updating it and kept the ball rolling? I doubt it. It would've still been a hit, but it has sustained it's momentum by keeping people playing it, loving it and recommending it to others.

And Cut the Rope has what it takes to be a game like that, a game that can be among the most popular month after month after month. But it requires them to keep people playing it, loving it and recommending it. If you're not playing Cut the Rope in a few months time because you've already played all there is to it, how likely are you to be recommending it? If you look at the games that have sustained their popularity, like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and Doodle Jump, they all did it because they kept people playing the games by adding new content, which in turn has kept people playing them, loving them and recommending them. This very thing have made them far more popular than any of the games that just came out and that was that.

To try and sum it up, would you rather make 5 million NOW or 20 million over the next year?

cut the rope wouldn't necessarily need new levels, but it would be extremely moronish of them not to do it after having announced new upcoming levels in the game itself!

...unless they intended "new levels coming soon... in our next game!"

I totally agree. I searched for the Cut the Rope thread to make this point.

Some people are saying that when you pay .99 and get the game, you already got what is worth for your money.

I enjoyed Cut the Rope. But I felt sad when I finished it, getting all the stars, in 1 or 2 hours...

I reset-ed, played everything again, and now the app is sitting there.

I don't think that they have the obligation to give updates for "free" like Angry Birds, but Rovio did, and you see how successful Angry Birds got. The thing is, maybe I want that Cut the Rope follows the same pattern, because it deserves to be next to Angry Birds.

But I will not buy the Holiday Special. If I think that the original one is too easy and too short, I can't even imagine how the Holiday version will be.

I feel ripped off not because of the money, but because of the good impression that I spread to my friends, in a game that lasts what it lasts...

    From slide to play:
"Chillingo just dropped a line to let us know that update 1.1 is coming soon for the smash hit (and extremely fun) Cut The Rope. As a by-the-way, they also mentioned that the game has sold over three million copies worldwide. That's a lot of cavities for Om Nom.

This free update will include a new level pack called the Cosmic Box, which will contain an additional 25 levels. The Cosmic Box will have a space ship theme, as well as a new gameplay mechanic that "turns physics upside down." Also included will be "enhanced Retina display graphics, improved scoring accuracy, more expressive Om Nom animations, new musical sounds, and 11 new achievements."

And if that's not enough for you, they're also promising to release another update in time for the holidays. While you wait, take a gander at the teaser trailer they just released for the new update."

    Can't wait! 25 levels+retina+new om nom animations=win
