Having just watched the video, I'm intrigued but have a few questions. -How is the score in Classic Defense determined? I mean if it is based simply on how many baddies I take out I'd imagine most players who complete the level will have very similar scores. -Can one play all of the Defense maps in Endless mode? -Are there any maps where the baddies are able to move more freely than single file? Like have a little open space where they might be free to take different paths?
I'm just curious... is this going to be available on the ipad 1, and ipod touch 3g ? Or will it only be available on the ipad 2 + ?
Defense scores are based on a few factors:- Firstly, the closer the creep is to your base when killed, the lower the score you earn from them, so you are challenged to take more risks and bring the fight to the creeps than just sit back and defend your base. Secondly, you earn score multipliers for killing multiple creeps within a half second of each other, so you can get to 5x or 7x or even 10x multipliers that effect that score collection at that time, so bunching up firepower into concentrated areas help to earn bigger scores.... but, thats very hard to do with more than 1 enemy spawn point. Finding the right locations to concentrate your forces on 3 or 4 spawn position maps is a fun challenge. All Defense levels can be played in all gameplay modes including Endless In Defense modes all creeps move that way though, again, with 3 or 4 spawn points, that gets quite challenging. In Skirmish mode, again the automated creeps all move in the same form, but its both directions,, and you need to also worry about enemy troops that move freely, making the Skirmish games quite hectic and challenging. Cheers
No iPad 1, sorry, it's just not fast enough. I did try very hard to get it working and it does, to a point, but only on the smaller maps with less creeps. Also, no iPad or Touch. Just iPad 2 or later. The iPhone screen is just too small to play Cubemen properly.
I'm looking forward to this game. I found a review of the PC version of it ( http://www.gamezebo.com/games/cubemen/review ) and the game is good. I have a question: on iPad do we only need our GameCenter account to play the online mode?
Here is another cool review, probably explains Cubemen perfectly with regards to what I was after in terms of design choices. http://jayisgames.com/archives/2012/03/cubemen.php Also, GameCenter is only used for Scores and Achievements on iOS. All networking (MP games) are done through a different framework to allow you to play networks games across multiple platforms. To be honest, you don't even need your GameCenter account connected as we also mirror all scores on our global server so you compete against other players on other platforms, and all achievements are also stored locally.
Thanks for the infos! I really hope the iPad version will be as good as the PC one! I have a "weird" question though: why don't we need to pay the global server cost to play online? I also wonder why we don't need to pay to play online modes of iOS games that use GameCenter (no CubeMen) ?
Cubemen on iPad is the exact same game that is on Desktop, but with touch instead of mouse. And it's pretty awesome with touch! Players don't need to pay for global servers hosting costs etc mainly because the developer covers those costs. It just gets added to the cost of development. Apple run their own servers for GameCenter match making so again, they are able to cover the costs as part of their operational costs. Cheers
EXTREMELY excited for Cubemen release. This game looks like perfect! The walkthrough really sells this as a fast-paced game! It's got the 'tiny men' feel that I love about RTS games, with the focus of a Tower Defense game! AND Online?!@ Yeah, Hour ONE purchase. I've already gone to other big message boards hyping the release. Best of luck!
I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before, but is there absolutely NO chance that it comes to Iphone/Ipod? *crosses fingers*
Pretty sure no chance, sorry, the screen is just too small. Cubemen is really a desktop game running on the iPad (awesome with touch controls). Though it runs ok (performance wise) on the iPhone, it just isn't a great user experience. The units are too small to control and the levels are too fiddly to interact with properly. Zoom in and out isn't a solution to this problem, and the game won't be going through a re-design just to get it to iPhone as it is currently the exact version of the intended design.
Ok thanks for the quick response, though I'm disappointed, I get what you mean. Well, time to get an iPad!
I truly do understand your disappointment, but I can't just wrangle Cubemen to work on the small screen and still be proud of what I have delivered, and I know for a fact that users will be more frustrated than happy with the end result. If I was after a quick $ I'd try it, but that's not who I am or the reputation I am striving for as an Indie developer. You should have an iPad anyway... they rock!
Yes I agree. By watching some gameplay videos I understand that such a small screen would be kind of...not fun for lack of a better phrase. I admit it would probably be a pain to constantly be zooming in and out and trying to make precise touches. And that is great to hear! I really hope this game does well though. I shall convince my friends to buy this and give it a spin on their iPads. And of course, when I get an iPad, this will be one of my first purchases
I was going to buy this anyway but after reading this comment i will insist that my wife buys it at the stroke of midnight as well. Nice to see a dev with this kind of thinking. Really hope the game does well for you.
Yeah she loves them but she tends to wait for price drops rather than buying things when they release. She wants everything for 69p or free
