I agree 100% with you here. Chaos Rings has a pretty great story: it's just told in a subtle way, which is why it feels more grown up for me. But CGS provides some of the more traditional pleasures of a JRPG, and does so very well. (BTW, as far as I am concerned, the GameSpot review of the PSP version is totally bogus). On the item menu: barring a hardware specific problem (which I doubt), the problem is that the swipe direction is counter-intuitive, so until you're body is trained, it's easy to get the direction wrong. Doesn't help that the combat skill menu goes the opposite direction. Its' definitely a problem with the design, but once you get used to it, is not an issue.
@eduku : i think not, when menus are working, it's not that hard to use them @square : 3GS 16g 4.0 not JB (atm ) I did a reboot of my device, the menus seems more stable, no problems for the moment after 20min of play (so if menus are going crazy guys, simply reboot your device) it may be linked to memory usage but trust me, it was not a "user swipe" problem, as i swiped as usual and navigating in menu was a crazy story. If i can reproduce this, i'll tell, but i can understand scepticism about people who doesn't encountered the bug.
Well, I haven't encountered this 'bug', and I'm on a 2G iPhone and never had to reboot for this game.
Your specs are similar to mine (3Gs, 32Gb). To be clear, I see the design flaw in the menu -- I'm not blaming the user -- but I've found it to be surmountable. Now, if you're experiencing an actual bug, the best thing to do is report it to Nate Games. But I've put about 12 hours into the game now and I have yet to see it. Maybe I'm just lucky .
I think the most counter-intuitive thing about is that the menus is the direction it scrolls in relation to your swipe actually changes. E.g. in the battle menu, you swipe upwards to go down a selection and vica versa, but when you choose a skill to use, swiping upwards makes you go up a selection instead, which is quite disorientating. A small gripe about the combat I have is that the 'follow-up' activation after you land a critical hit (the 'A' at the middle-bottom-ish of the screen') doesn't remain for long enough. It's easy enough to do for the PSP since your finger would already be on the button ready to press it, but on my iPhone I don't want to have my finger hovering over the middle of the screen everytime I use a normal attack, so I've pretty much given up on trying to activate the follow-up critical.
That change in direction is exactly what I'm talking about. It's like a push-only door that has a pull handle: the obvious cues suggest the wrong motion. And yeah, the follow-up attack thing is something that didn't translate so well from the PSP version. That kind of feature is very much a console thing -- you rarely find it on PC RPGs. Perhaps a completely different method would have worked better on the iPhone (I hate to say it, but a quick tilt as you attack?). In any event, it's not a big deal for me.
and much worse .....it doesn't save when you receive a call ! in fact there seems to be no autosave at all ! this for a game on a mobile phone is unacceptable
The saving is fairly painless. CGS really gives me a lot of hope for gaming in general on iphone -- not just for the RPG genre.
Did you get 100% in chaos rings? The story is extremely deep; actually quite deeper than most JRPGs. If you didn't find the story genius you didn't play through the whole game.
Auto-save would be nice. I just don't think that it is a necessity, particularly if you can save anywhere and not just on designated save points.
yeah cos i'm always anticipating a phone call i dont think auto save woiuld be nice, i think it is a basic necessity
No: because you are smart enough to save often while playing an RPG -- I'm giving you a bit of credit here. Again, if auto save is a "necessity," I would recomment sticking to cellphone games.
Honestly, I didn't like Chaos Rings, the storyline wasn't so great, but the visual graphics were great. Hybrid: Eternal Whispers was a awsome game with it's great storyline and it's great functionality. And it seems that Crimson Gem Saga is a pretty good game so far
Dear God you didn't get 100% in Chaos Rings either It's a shame. CR really does have an amazing story...
horrible control bought this game.. could not resist. what i can say is that it has horrible control, unlike CR. but overall looks good.
So I've been trying to reproduce that bug where you can't get out of the skill menu when using medallions, I can see that it won't let you go back if you touch away from the menus, like it should, but when I touch right below the menus, near the bottom, it works fine. Hard to explain, here's some sort of drawing... ------------------------ - - - - - - - around here - ------------------------ I simply was not able to reproduce the bug, is it something that happens once in a while or is it a consistent bug? Works fine for me... Edit: drawing doesn't work, it's below the menus but not quite all the way down. Edit: Ok, now everything works fine 100%, very strange...
