I must say, it had been a while that dying in battle meant game over. O wow this brings good memories Also the hr long intro, lol.
It has massive , massive flaws, it's not just some minor bugs as Sqaurezero suggests, it's gamebreaking issues, the game itself is great, but paying it is some cruel form of torture, it's like being waterboarded and given head by Megan Fox at the same time. Personally I'm going to wait until they hopefully fix the bugs before trying to play it any longer, because strugging through the menu screens is ruining my experience of a great game. Be in no doubt before buying, it really is bad enough to be unplayable, and I'm not the type to moan about minor issues, I usually see other peoples anal complaints and wonder if they watch their clothes drying or the microwave turning and complain about the framerate. But this is a horrible port, WTF were they thinking, did they even test the game?
To each his own, my friend. I'm 9 hours into the game and loving every minute of it. For me the flaws, such as they are, are very minor. Take that as one person's opinion.
Has anyone gotten the 30,000 Sword yet? It's pretty great And I think one of the serious problems people are having is navigating the scrolling menus, such as selecting skills and buying weapons. This is probably because when you are at the top of the menu, and scroll up, the menu goes flying to the bottom, and then back to the top when you try to scroll back, giving the impression of flying out of control/being too sensitive. So just don't scroll up at the top of menus
Agreed. Basically, people are scrolling backwards (in the context of the game). That's the issue. Once you get past that, navigating the menus is not biggie. To say that a game is broken because of that is to have a very narrow perspective.
In battles, you scroll in a different direction then in the menus. This is what is keeping our muscle memory from taking hold, because it changes. Just little quarks that will get sorted out.
It's far from being unplayable, there are some things than need fixing but none that renders this game unplayable. It's money well worth it for me.
I'm 2 hours in and can't use my bronze medalions, I can't use them all as suggested because it's greyed out, thats after struggling with the options menu everytime I use it. I can't be arsed to struggle through buying the best weapons, I managed to get a good sword and thought that will have to do, as I'm not wrestling with the menu to buy armour. I don't have sausage fingers, I've been playing games since the late eighties, and I can overlook serious flaws, but playing a game should be an enjoyable experience, not something you have to struggle through which makes you swear and shout. I would rather not ruin the experience as I think this is the first real JRPG (ok it's Korean but you know what I mean) on the iPhone, Chaos rings was too short for my liking. I'm glad they ported it, but they did an awful job, If they didn't update it I would try and struggle through, but I'm going to sit this one out, otherwise I'll be replacing the glass on my iPhone again when I launch it out of the window, and that was almost as difficult to do as equiping your charactor in this game.
There will be those who will want to struggle through and there will be those who will go postal and kill the cat if they attempt to complete this game, looking through this thread it seems to be roughly 50/50. So ok it's not unpayable , in the definition that used to be used for emulated games (meaning you could compete it) but the controls seriously ruin the experience enough for many people not to consider it fun.
If your bronze medallions are grayed out, you don't have any skills that can be upgraded -- that's how it works. As to the store menus, I don't know what to say: it took me 20 minutes of game play to get used to them. If it's making you swear and shout by all means stop playing and hope that an update will fix things to your liking. But you need to understand that, like it or not, the issue is partly yours. It doesn't matter whether you've been gaming since the eighties (I've been at it since the 70's for whatever that's worth): some design decisions will simply not click with you. Doesn't make them awful or horrible (perhaps the most overused word in all of gaming). And it doesn't mean that someone who disagrees is lying to you. If I have time I will try to record a video showing the best way to navigate through the store menus. Perhaps that will help make the experience bearable and allow you to enjoy this beautiful game.
Its NOT his fault anyone can agree that the menu controls are completely retarded. Are you working for the devs or something? The only one that says its nothing wrong with them is YOU
I agree with you in a way, the fault may be partly mine, but it's not just me who's having problems is it? there are many people saying the exact same thing, and they are people that would otherwise love the game so it's not like they have an axe to grind. The controls should not put off so many people so yes there is something wrong with the controls.
To temporarily get around the shop menu issue, remeber this: It's not tap, it's not hold, it's quick swipe. To go up and down, all you need to do is a quick swipe in up/down direction and let go off your finger from the screen. To go left and right, quick swipe in left/right direction. So basically in the shop menu, if you want go down the item, do a quick swipe down, if you want go up, do a quick swipe up. To purchase an item, choose the item first then swipe right to select quantity then tap on the item again to purchase. It took me 2 minutes to figure out.
This game has amazing voice-over! The VA actors are really professional unlike some anime VAs who sound so fake. I only started not long ago, but god it's so funny when the main character said "...I'm actually a salutatorian." The VA is just hilarious the way he spoke. Epic!
I am using a quick swipe, but it's still hit and miss, it can take 3-4 attempts to do something as simple as select a potion.
Game Impressions I'm not going to praise the game here since others have said it many times before. Instead I'll just say it's a great game. Few things I need to mention: - The controls: Sometimes when I try to ambush enemies I'm moving directly towards them from the back. Then suddenly my char takes a turn and I'm running past the mobs. Also the menus are too sensitive. The worst part is trying to sell several items. Often times when I have selected one item to be sold and move to the next item it'll deselect the first item and then move on to the next making me go back to the first item and select it again. I know some people don't see this as an issue, but I do. I'm not the worst complainer here and even though I've adopted the slow and steady swipe method the controls are still proving to be a bit of a pain. It would be brilliant to have a setting in the options where we can adjust the sensitivity of the touch and also an option to get some arrow buttons for the menus that we could use to navigate the menus instead of swipes. - Performance: I'm playing on a 3G phone with 4.0.1 iOS jailbroken. The game plays quite well except at times when I keep the phone locked while the game is running the return might take around 10 seconds. Also once I experienced a lockup due to low memory (had 3MB available) where I couldn't get the lockscreen lighted up. I let the phone just stand there for about 15 minutes until it had closed the game and I could start playing again. For this I believe the jailbreak is to blame, so I would say the game plays well on vanilla 3G phone. - The difficulty: The game really is hard when compared to other similar games in which the enemies are a pushover. I don't know if it's just me spending my AP on unlocking the skills and after that not bothering to learn them since they seem bad or what, but I beat the skeleton knight and the spider lady at level 18-21 and it was a REAL pain. The levels in general come pretty fast, making me not have to use many potions to heal my HP/MP. Also I haven't had any money troubles and I have been able to buy everything I've wanted/needed. On the flipside the AP gain seems slow. I can't accumulate enough AP for one char, not to mention for 4 that I have now. Maybe it'll even out later in the game, or maybe I'm just too greedy with my skills - I don't even know what's the maximum level limit. Another issue that's a bit related to controls is talking to NPC's. Sometimes I find it hard to get close enough facing them to talk. I wouldn't mind if I could talk to them while my back turned, just being close enough. All in all a great game with not too many flaws. The controls issue might be just because I'm old and my fingers are bulky, and stuff. EDIT: Guess I was a bit hasty with the money and difficulty issues. After getting to a new city and acquiring a new group member I lost all my money on gear and had to go grind more for some missing equipment. Also the monsters in the new area are a bit easier.
For the ones interested, on youtube there are already 3 videos from the iPhone version of the game that show pretty well the game, the menus, etc... Just search for 'Crimson Gen Saga iPhone'. I'm very interested in this game but I have to finish some backlog first (mostly Castlevania and Chaos Rings, which after the first couple is pretty boring imho). Impressions and videos, along with some reviews of the PSP version from Metacritic, really kept me interested in this game. Cutscenes seems pretty wonderful. From what I read the real only thing that scare me a bit is the lack of autosaving. I'm used to save often, but I really think it should be a mandatory option in an iPhone game, considering that a call could come all of a sudden (if I plan a long gaming session and I can, I usually turn off the cellular keeping only wifi active though). I hope the story is good and compelling, even if nothing new in the genre.
