Contest update! Ahoy maties! Shiver me timbers, GameLab is impressed! Thank ye all for yer submissions, it's great to see yer creativity. Sink me, the decision will be hard! We see a lot of potential in this, so, to make the competition even more intense and to give ye more time & chances, we be prolong the contest deadline till 25 January (Monday) Claim yer booty! Fair winds and friendly seas, me hearties...
I'm gonna translate this to: Gamelab thinks non of your icons match the game! so we are making the deadline the 25th to see if a graphic designer that can match the games style will come along and make us a good icon! by the way I'm not saying are icons are bad I'm just saying they don't match ( too epic or too clip arty)
2 motitas well, honestly, it's not how you put it. we are just giving you, guys, more time. that's the main point
Arr! Here's mine!!! I am quite new to Toucharcade, and to the iphone world in general-but not to the CG World. And neither to the pirate's world!!! So, when i saw the other submissions, and since the sources were really low-res, i knew i had to paint my own. So i started off with photoshop, drawing and painting, and again, and again, and again. But still, i could'nt get a grasp on what i had to do. Pirate shooting a musket? Nah, it isn't impressive on a 100x100 res. Zombie cow jumping? Ah, already done... A pirate coin? Sigh, thousands of them. No skulls, as i am scared of them. And what's the style of the game by the way? Long story short, i was quickly running out of ideas and time (i am attending a really hard school, too little time left for my PC ^_^) Then it struck me. The giant squid, that's the recognizable point of the game! It has a unique design, a nice face, and can be brought to a tiny icon without losing its style. I knew i had to do by myself (no copy/paste), so i started grabbing all the references i could find on Gamelab's website. Then i lay off the basic colours, and painted over shades and lights. But i was running out of time, so i quickly took the tentacle's texture and pasted it over the squid i had drawn-so that i could speed up things. Or at least i thought so: i spent the next hour matching my drawing with the textures, using the fluidify filter, the transform and some old good hand drawing to match the pasted stuff with my drawing. Lesson for next time: i have to do everything alone ^_^ Well, howewer the icon was almost done. I had had this nice idea: using the png transparency to make it pop out of the screen. The original concept had the squid shooting out a bullet towards the viewer. But there was one problem: the squid hasn't got a musket!!! So i decided to have him grabbing a treasure map! I quickly made a parchment, played a lot with image adjustments, lights and shadows, and voilĂ ! The last thing i did was downscaling from the original 700x700 resolution to the required 100x100. I adjusted some wrong coloured pixel with the brush, added some more highlights, and it was done Total time spent: 5 hours and a half Tools used: photoshop (mostly) In the end we have an icon that really pops out of the screen, portraiting the main character, and that isn't the plain, old, glossy iphone icon. What else could you want from life? 100x100: 500x500 (to see the details, please dear reader, do not steal it ^_^) Mockup (to see how it works in reality!) What do you think? What would you add? I'm open to any comment and critique! Thanks a lot, Fede, from Italy.
woops...big images ^_^ Might be annoying for the reader... if anyone knows how do downscale them, please drop me a note ^_^ Fede
EDIT: images hosted on my site didn't show up. I attached them to the message. But if you aren't logged in, here are the img links: http://ziotoo4.altervista.org/pg100.png http://ziotoo4.altervista.org/pg500.png http://ziotoo4.altervista.org/mockup.png Hopefully this will work, i'm still trying to understand how the forum works... Fede
Hi motitas! they are already downscaled in the attachment method: for some strange reason adding an link to my personal web warehouse didn't work. Hope you can see them now, and don't worry about the 13 years-thing: i would have thought the same thing in your place ^_^ Removed! Fede
Wow, ziotoo4, You shoot into the center. Your icon matches perfectly game style, moreover it does present of of characters met in the game and, additionally, You made it on Your own, it is not screenshot remake. What can I say... Guess contest is over for as I have already made everything I had in my mind what what my skills allowed me to. Not it is big-time for proffessional designers and I can only spur You.
I agree. The hat needs some work. However, dude!! I smell a winner with this one! Great job! Very creatively done. Nice work!
Ok fine here is one with a red beard option. I don't have time to do a candy graphic version till this weekend. Thank God for the extension.
Modification I LOVE your icon ziotoo4. I added original icon to my springboard and I didn't like how it looked. Here's my version of this octopus hugging the iPhone icon which looks nice IMHO... What do you think?
Some fantastic new additions since my last visit! My favourite would be the uberly map possessive squid, but the red-bearded pirate is a close second (the red beard is definitely an improvement Dylan!) As for my own icon, I figured since everyone is wipping up iPhone springboards, why not do so myself (the original icon in semi-full res is on page 12 I believe) I wonder if the deadline extension is because of timeframe issues with the game itself *prods the game developers with a stick* We want pirates, NOW!
Hm... I guess mine is looking not that bad. Personally, I am going to use it though, maybe as a webclip icon.
