These are typically $5 games but once one dev ups the prices they all follow. By middle next year $15 should be the norm and that will include IAP's. Already $25 games have begun to appear. I think devs are hoping to be able to level out on ios at a maximum of around $50.

With Steam they keep it about $50-$90 ios will range from about $10-$50. We're at $25 already and if you account add ons for Battle Academy it's about $60 altogether.

Many devs are quietly raising their prices by 100% adding IAP and giving less content. This game was a $4.99 game last year. It's only greed nothing else and it stinks but what can you do?

I'm interested too just I don't want to get hit with IAP on top of the A$8.99. Ios games are becoming way too expensive. The problem us you buy the game premium price then after a couple if months they make it freemium with IAP and you can't play without buying more stuff. Pure greed.

This has no iap! Which is excellent news.

Tbh that alone is worth supporting the devs for, enough sitting on the fence, I'm buying it now! If it's one tenth as good as Silent Service, it'll be money well spent.

    Quick review

Ok, I have only put in about 30 minutes on this game but so far very intriguing. It is not really sim based but it also isn't really arcady. I am 35 and I remember I use to play a PC sub game back in the early 90's that gives a little feel like this (sorry don't remember the name). Once I get some more play time in I will give more details. If people have any questions feel free to ask and I will dig into it. It isn't that I don't want to play more I am just at work so can only get in quick play sessions.

I will say this, best submarine experience I have had so far on iOS. I am playing on iPhone and very good, I will play on iPad later as that should bring it to life a little more.

I am also reminded of an old PC sub game called Gato. It needed enough planning to be fun yet was not so detailed a sim that it was more work than play. I guess I'll pick this up. At $7 it's about the same price as a submarine sandwich but will last longer and probably be far tastier.

  6. Hi, I'm the developer of Crash Dive and wanted to jump in to answer some questions.

the info seems to suggest it's an arcade game rather than a Sub Sim.
    and
I just would like to know where it sits between Arcade & Sim. Too arcadey would put me off.

My feeling is that it's about 75-80% sub sim (but just the tactical combat part of a sub sim), 20-25% arcade. I tried to blend the two as seamlessly as possible, but I'm confident that some people will hate it for being too arcade-y, and almost everyone else will hate it for being to sim-y. :)

The best comparison I can offer is to the classic "Silent Service"; if you liked that game, you'll enjoy Crash Dive.

humm, decoy? torpedoing with periscope up? Ah...I am going to give this one a...pass...

Decoys are legit, they're modeled after the German Pillenwerfer/Bold decoys. I can't guarantee that they were ever deployed on Type VIIC U-boats, but I've found no evidence to the contrary, either.

As for torpedoing with the periscope up, that's your choice as captain, you don't have to EVER put it up if you don't want to.

Can anyone tell me how this looks on an iphone? The text looks really small. I'm wondering if it is even readable on a small screen.

Personally, I find the iPhone screen too small to play the game comfortably, but plenty of testers had no problem with it. Your mileage may vary with the age of your eyes. :)

I'm just a little concerned that there's no dud torpedoes or limited air supply.

At this point, no. I might add a fourth difficulty level that introduces dud torpedoes and removes some of the less realistic visual aids (i.e. sonar ping rings). I don't think I'll add limited air supply, because from a gameplay perspective, it's redundant to limited battery power.

    are there patrol aircraft?

    No.

    That's a trailer, not a gameplay video.

True, though all of the footage after the title screen is captured directly from gameplay. I really should make an actual playthrough video, but every time I try, I'm faced with how even a really exciting sub battle for the player turns into a really boring movie for a spectator. :)

I don't want to get hit with IAP on top of the A$8.99.

There will NEVER be IAP in Crash Dive. I think free games + IAP is a cancer that is destroying the quality of the mobile game market, and I won't contribute to it.

So for those who do buy the game, I really hope you enjoy it. For those waiting on reviews, I'm hoping that review sites will start posting on it soon.

    Happy hunting,

    -Scott

Okay I bought the game and have been playing for a couple of hours.

I'm a sim fan and have been brought up on Silent Service, Red Storm Rising, Silent Hunter etc etc.

I am very impressed with this game, I went in with slight mixed feelings and some concerns but most of my worries are gone. This is a SUPERB game and really does seem to bring back the feeling of the classic game. I totally recommend this to any sub fans!

My only issue (and it's not major) is that the game seems to run too fast. Hunting with a submarine should be slower and have more time waiting. I would like it to play slower.

Hearing the dev might add dud torpedoes in the future is really great!

Overall, any Silent Service fan would enjoy this greatly.

Yeah I been a sim player since the c64... Would've been earlier if vic20 was able to do sims.
I think I too will go for this as getting promising words said about it.
Spent hours on silent service 1 and 2 aswell :)

So badly want this to be a great game. Concerned over small file size & what i would expect from the game. There seems to be a lack of good gameplay video out there to help me decide. Is it too arcade like? Is the gameplay well done? Am i hiding & hunting & is that part of the game fun? What is the concensus on this one?

The more I play this, the more I like it.

Sure it's not a full blown sim, but then again it's not a crappy arcade game.

I plan on posting a 4-5 star review on the App Store tomorrow, but right now it's 3:30am and I need sleep. If you're still on the fence about this game, just buy it now! I've already had my money's worth out of it in one day. Awesome fun.

Edit:- Just had a tense game, had three ships circling me and I had bad damage so must have been making lots of noise, I fired off a torpedo from the aft tube and got a lucky hit on a corvette but the warhead didn't arm as the distance was within 250m. I just LOVED that :D

I for one sat on the fence too long. Remember RBI 2014? I bought that too soon as I am a baseball fanatic...way too arcade...but not the case here. I have fond memories of silent service and this is a great replacement! Do not let the small download fool you ( just good programming imo) Anyone who enjoys a good sub simulator I will highly recommend. Does not hurt either the developer has promised no IAPs ....ever! That clinched it for me. And no it is not too much! Slept in this morning because of this damn game! Lol

Statement: I would withdraw my previous comment. I read some referred quotes from some other serious sub sim boards that turns me around. I bought the game and enjoy it very much. If you run sub sim before all you need is to be familiar with the UI and there you go skip!

Now I am missing the sound of the propellers roaming above my boat...

I c-n-p this post from Pocket Tactics forum, without permission:

Ok, at a PC now and can actually type. :)

I like it. let's just say it. It is fantastic. I have not actually played Silent Service since 1989 and never played Silent Hunter so I cannot compare directly. My memory of the original Silent Service is limited to what amounts to a few screenshots on a black and white TV with the NES hooked up to it and always getting the blow tanks and the release debris mixed up.

So there are to main game modes, each have an east, med, and hard difficulty. The harder difficulties are achieved by winning on the previous ones. I am still not entirely clear what criteria flags a "win" though. The instructions are not too clear on that point. Do I just need to sink the transports? Do I also have to sink all 5 of those destroyers? I don't know. So the two game modes are Patrol and Single engagement. Single engagement drops you into the water about 300M from a convoy. Usually with 1 or 2 escorts. After you start launching torpedoes and you are spotted, you get chased down by the escorts. Then after a few more minutes some more escort ships show up and you are then trying to evade 5 ships or so. And those ships are wicked hart to torpedo if they are actively looking for you. That is a real challenge I have not manage to accomplish yet. Sink all the ships and I think you are done.

Patrol mode is basically the same but you get to seek out convoys on a larger map containing regions with possible convoys (but you can bump into them anywhere) and milch cows for resupply. sail around and you get a popup informing you that you spotted the convoy and how many transports and how many escorts there are. You then get the option to engage or not. [1 transport with 5 escorts! what is on that thing! Doesn't matter, I am not going anywhere near it!]. After you sink a convoy, you sail around a bit more, sink more, and resupply, etc. After a while the patrol ends and you get your final score, based on total tonnage sank. A play through on easy I think took me about an hour.

The tutorial covers all the bases and after completing it, you can get right into the game, no problem. Fairly well done. It goes over the UI and has you try out all the main tactics. It even has you practice sneaking up on ship in different ways so you can get a feel for how close you can get without being spotted.

The interface is good. Everything you need to know is presented to you on a single screen. It just barely works on my iPhone5S but is workable. Much better on an iPad though and I suspect it would be just fine on a Mini. I played a whole patrol on my 5S so it does work. There are 3 main views based on how deep you sub is. On the surface you are standing on the coning tower, periscope depth you get the scope, and under 10 feet you just get the map. Either of the other two views can also use the map view. There is time dilatation up to x8 to shorten up the chases. Keeps things moving at a good pace. Damage appears as colored bars over on the right and only shows when there is damage or flooding and you can tap to select the one you want the crew to work on (Flooding first folks!). You can tap and hold to bring up a 3d spinning model of you boat showing in red the part that is damaged. Another handy feature is you can tap the heading indicator and your fantastic crew will change your heading to match the direction you are looking.

A few things I didn't care for, all fairly minor. Bringing up the damage on the 3d model of the boat does not pause anything and sits over you main view. Blocking anything going on. Not recommended if anything is going on. But you don't need to because it is pretty useless anyway. What would be better would be to pause and bring up another screen showing which portions of your boat are damaged. As it is now, bringing up the "damage model" only indicates the area you were tap-holding on. So you can not get that view that shows the only non red portion of your boat is the head. In the map view, you get nice range-time lines for both your torpedoes and your targets so you can do some dead reckoning targeting from 50 meters down. The target's is easy to see and read, which is red on a light blue sea. However your is light green on a light blue sea and is near impossible to read. Well, possible, but difficult. Your depth can only be selected as 0, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200. Crush depth is random between 200 and 300, however I have only been crushed deeper than 290. The game mentions a thermocline around 150 meters. I would like to be able to set my depth maybe at 150 so I can get under that if I need to quicker than if I was at 100 but it takes for ever to get up to 50 from the full 200. Speaking of that. If I am being depth charged, it would be nice to have the option to "risk it" and dive to 250. I also noticed when trying to aim while zoomed in with your boat off the screen, your fire line tends to jump around a lot when steering you boat.

All in all, I would say this is a great value, the best iOS submarine game currently available, the graphics are pleasing. I saw this morning steel drums flying off a ships deck following an explosion off the stern as a ship was sinking and there are lots of crates and debris floating in the water after the sinking. (no people, only crates and stuff. There is not a single human modeled or pictured in this at all near as I can tell). If you like submarine or naval games, this is a easy purchase. It is not a hard core sim, but it is perfect for mobile.

If this is not persuade you, I guess nothing can...
