I remember in the days of 1.1.4 (installer) when the dev team would have a jailbreak ready days after apple firmware releases. At most you would have to wait a week for a windows version if one wasn't already available. Now a days we have many devs working on jailbreaks and it seems to be even more of a hassle to jailbreak if your not already and on current firmware. I remember when tethered jailbreaks wern't even needed but know it seems to be a quick way to do it but also half ass.....is this because of security from apple, or many cause of so many different devices, or did the dev loose interest? It also seems as if there are less reputable sources, because there are so many sources. Which one works? Which one is bugged? "this link is expired", from what I remember it was a lot easier in the erlier days when it came from one or to sources and it was either working or not and they told you if it did or not: "2.0 is available from iTunes but if you want to keep your jailbreak or unlock stay on 1.1.4 until the 2.0 jailbreak is ready on ?/?/?" Apple has lossened its grip on there devices slightly, so many veteran jailbreakers (like myself) have lost interest in the cat and mouse game of updating with either iTunes or waiting for a reputable jailbreak. many new comers are aprehensive about the discovering the possabilities of opening your device to non approved content because theres so many differnt outlets to source its almost a hassle even for pro jail breakers. many people still have there own valid reasons to jailbreak however since I moved in from 4.1 I've lost interest. Many people developers (apple and non) sell in the cydia store, so I hope jail breaking will live for a long time but I would like it to see it become an easier process. But as apple puts out new firmware there will be new things to overcome. Jailbreak.com me was probably the sweetest jailbreak I've ever seen. However it didn't give you access to the root file (at least it didn't show up as a jailbroken device in iPhone explorer, even though I had Cydia on the device) ****Id like to get back into jailbreaking (mainly my ipad on 4.2.1 untethered or 4.3 w/multi gestures enabled on windows, but some of the above reasons is why i havent tried much to find a pain free JB if you can help) feel free to comment if you feel the same, or in contrast.****
I agree. I used to be really into JB'ing, but lost interest since my 4g iPotch. If it ever becomes jailbreakme simple, then I'll consider doing it again.
Yes. It's new security from Apple. There are two parts to a successful jailbreak; gaining root access, the "jailbreak" part, and hacking the bootroom, which is what loads iOS onto your device when you reboot it. The problem is that many people try to gain root access (and they're quite good at it now), but few try to hack the baseband. If the bootroom isn't hacked, the device can't reboot. Bootroom exploits are also much rarer than jailbreaks. There are only three modern jailbreak groups: The chronic-dev team, the iPhone dev team, and Geohot. Sort of; the jailbreakers are good at getting the jailbreak part but they don't care as much getting it untethered. Did you install Afc2add from Cydia? Your device won't show up as jailbroken in iPhone explorer without that installed. Use greenpois0n. Stop by my jailbreaking iOS 4 thread for more details.
It's ironic, isn't it? Well, he is every bit as good (if not better) as the other groups so I count him as one.
Why? and since when did jail breaking need to stop before you'd kiss my ass....you can do that anytime
Was holding off for a good simple untethered JB for 4.2.1 and just learned today that there is one for windows users now. Awesome. Will be jailbreaking soon.
I haven't jailbroken since the 3GS came out. I was all about jailbreaking for the first two generations, but as the App Store grew and the jailbreaks (or perhaps more specifically, certain background apps) tended to destabilize my device, I just ended up giving up on it. Plus, I was really getting tired of the aforementioned game of cat & mouse with OS updates vs. jailbreaks for them. With the time between OS release and jailbreak seeming to take exponentially longer with each release these days, it's just not something I care to bother with. I do miss emulators, I will say that, and I've been toying on and off with the idea of jailbreaking my iPad (I won't jailbreak my iPhone) but it keeps coming back to playing catch-up with jailbreaks after a new iOS release, plus the whole backup-upgrade-jailbreak-restore cycle, and then I just can't be bothered again. To be honest, other than emulators, there's really not much on the jailbreak scene that's worth the hassle to me anymore.
Imo, the only time jailbreaking would stop is if everyone was happy with their "unjailbroken" device or they just lose interest. I doubt that would ever happen though. Lol. So my guess is... It will never stop.
I just read an article that the Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.6 has already been unteathered JB'd. Not sure if source is reliable... but there is a photo.
