I've been learning Japanese with Rosetta Stone for the last 3 months... mainly because I watch a lot of anime... =oP

But I"m a LONG ways away from learning how to read Japanese... =o/

Still gonna have to pick this one up... =oD

Never heard of this one but reading up on it a bit it does sound kinda spooky I think I'm going to go for the download PSP version though as it's cheaper and definitely in English.

Considering the vast majority of the userbase would actually be in Japan (and thus the JPN App store) it's true releasing it on other stores doesn't make sense the number of those that can understand Japanese who live outside of Japan combined with being interested in this game would probably be tiny.

Only other thing I would say is to refrain from calling it a RPG because Corpse Party is no such thing. The original one on the NEC could be called that (even then it would be a stretch) but this remake basically turned the series (for the better) into a visual novel. The expanded sequel on PSP (was a remake+sequel) completed the full transition to visual novel by ditching the top-down navigation parts, replaced by more traditional visual novel navigation.

English description + non English app is playing dirty IMO.

This. There are loads of foreign language apps released internationally, but they keep everything (including the app title) in the language they support.

Giving this an English name and description just seems like an attempt to me to drum up more publicity from sites like this, and perhaps even dupe people int buying it anyway - especially when it's already been established that they probably can't offer an English version in the future.

Corpse Party is getting coverage here because it's a really cool PSP game. It's a bummer it's not available in English yet, but I have a very hard time feeling sorry for anyone dumb enough to be "duped" into downloading a game that not only says it's only in Japanese right in the iTunes text but also is clearly Japanese in literally every screenshot. People who would be "duped" by these things would also find themselves "duped" if the iTunes description was in Japanese as well.

How sorry can you feel for consumers that are that willfully ignorant and uninformed that they can't be bothered to follow any of these clues before dropping $30?

Plus the fact that people are already balking at price tags over $0.99 so a game that is $30.00 would put off a ton of people including the willfully ignorant ones.

I'd add that while the app description uses English words, a cursory glance would reveal that it isn't technically "in English". Ahem. >_>

As for those claiming that the developers are ripping consumers off by misleading them as to language (which they're not, because the app requirements and the description both state "Japanese only"), and charging too much for the game, you can't have it both ways. If people are actually paying for the game, by definition it can't be "overpriced", and if they're not, then nobody's being taken advantage of.

    No English? $25? No problem!

First off: I'm happy to see this game, I'm happy Touch Arcade shone a spotlight on it to bring it to my attention, and I have no problem paying $25 USD for it. I typically shy away from the very silly "complaining about price" threads as they pop up on this site - but I don't think I can stay away from this one (the price and the language issue):

Can't speak for other US states, but there are plenty of American people who are fluent in Japanese living here in Hawai'i. Possibly a fair portion of them will pick up this game (it was an instabuy for me, and would've been even if it were $35). Further, the $25 price range isn't bad at all for what essentially is a VERY polished VN with some slight JRPG elements - and an *extremely professional* voiceover that goes entirely from start to finish of the game (I might guess that the budget for the voice actors is what drove the cost of the game up more than any other factor, the voice acting is spot on).

The belief that becuase the game is on iOS, which typically has unbelievably low prices, and therefore ought to have a really low price tag ***is really not a relevant argument at all***. It would be, if and ONLY if this were, say, EA selling all their games suddenly at $24... I'd be disturbed / alarmed at what that trend might mean, but that's not the case here, people! It's a niche category for niche gamers - doesn't mark an upward trend that I'd be afraid of. CAVE games also come at a premium - the newest DoDonPachi appeared at $4.99 and within minutes I saw pricing complaints, with nary a single comment about gameplay or performance. Absolutely ridiculous.

All that said, THIS game is deliriously *wrong* on so many levels it's *right*. It's crazy, and I love it. :) If you can't read Japanese, but understand it when heard, you can get by and understand what's going on because there is SO MUCH voiceover (and it's very professionally done). The story moves at a respectable clip, the artwork is spot on, it's a great (if very twisted) game.

I for one am glad that Touch Arcade featured it for a little while... it most certainly deserves more attention indeed, whether or not it'll ever be available in English (or any other language for that matter). And people, please, get over the price of niche games!! They aren't in danger of starting any iOS pricing trends anytime soon. Cheers!:)

Don't think that would work even if you did get the subs :(

Anyways, played a couple minutes of it and as Fujibayashi said, the voice acting is very well done (you can get a good idea from the trailer video of it too), and even if your level of Japanese isn't that good (like mine), the voice acting isn't too fast and you can always try to read it at your own pace. The graphics are nicely drawn, if you're a fan of anime or manga or the likes I would recommend this.

I took a quick look through the game files and it seems the scripts are saved in .bin formats, but you can easily change the extension to .txt and edit them to English. Here I edited the intro prompt -

Edit: I just managed to extract the English script from the PSP game, trying to put it into the iPhone version now.

Edit 2: Copying them directly doesn't seem to work.

Edit 3: The files are pretty much the same, except the PSP ones have messed up line breaks so the game just crashes when you use them.

Edit 4: I have no idea what to do now, but if anyone wants to take a stab at it here are the English script files Download

I'm definitively going to buy this, going to wait for an English translation or learn Japanese.

I think by the time you learn sufficient Japanese to understand what's going on in the game the English version'll be out :p

I got some friends to look at it, it seems this game uses the script files from the 1998 PC version instead of the PSP one, but it's a different story so that won't work :/ Best bet would just be to just wait for an English update soon hopefully.
