My computer's hard drive was replaced about a month ago, and I am confused as to the best way to connect my iPod with it. I have authorized iTunes to use my account and my iPod's data was copied onto iTunes. Since then, I downloaded an update on the computer. When I connected my iPod to the computer, I was asked to erase everything on it and copy everything from iTunes onto it. 1. Why would it do something like that? 2. If I say yes, will I lose all of my game saves?
This is because your iPod can only sync with 1 iTunes, and because all your data was on the old hard drive the new iTunes thinks that your trying to sync your iPod with a different iTunes. There is nothing you can do to fix this other than erase all the data and sync with your iTunes. Yes you will lost all of your data, as iTunes erases everything and does not perform a backup, when you face this issue
Any time you make a change to the hard drive or get a new computer you MUST copy and save the ENTIRE iTunes folder. There are some files in there that make iTunes recognize your iPod and has all your backups... Without an exact copy of the entire iTunes folder there isn't much that can be done. Do you have an older backup of the iTunes folder?
What are you guys talking about? I have a Windows laptop and a Macbook and I sync with iTunes on both of them, no problems at all. Didn't have to copy any folders either.
Interesting. I've never heard that before. Did you have to do anything special when you connected it to the second computer for the first time?
Probably. Actually I think I made a topic on here asking how to go about it, 'cause it confused me too. I figured it out (or someone told me) but now I can't remember what I did.
Oh I think I know. It has to do with enabling "Manually manage music and videos". If you have it set to automatic, it'll always try to overwrite the contents of the iPod with what's on that computers iTunes library. That's when you get the warning Crazy_Possum was talking about. Set it to manual and just drag & drop video/music files instead and you don't get that problem. Apps aren't affected.
Thanks for the idea, Midian, but it didn't work for me. I'm not getting the pop-up that I mentioned anymore, but now iTunes won't download onto my iPod.
When I connect my iPod, the screen with the iPod's information, like the memory I have left comes up. It also asks if I want to download iOS 4. But it won't back up my data or install new apps or updates.
Weird... so you've authorized your account and transfered your purchases from the iPod tothe computer? Sounds like a bug then... if it worked before then suddenly stopped working there's something strange going on.
