OK, so I need a little help here. Like I said if you can help me find a solution that works, I will gift you any game you like from the App Store. Not limited to Angry Birds here, I'm talkin Chrono Trigger, Modern Combat 3, IB2, whatever you like. First one to help me successfully gets the prize.

SO, here's the situation: I dropped my laptop (a Sony Vaio PCG-71311L) off the couch and the hard drive went kaput. I took the harddrive out of my older laptop (a Hewlett Packard HPG60-235CA, OS Windows Vista Home Premium *useful info*) and did a little transplant. Everything went fine, the Vaio booted right back up, Windows Vista launched, but now there is a new problem. I can't connect to the internet because I don't have the correct drivers installed. This is where you come in.

First I get the message, "insert the disc that came with your Ethernet Controller". I don't have this disc since the HP was second-hand. Obviously searching the Vaio for this driver was unsuccessful since I've got the HP hard drive in it, prompting the message "Windows was unable to install your Ethernet Controller, Windows could not find driver software for your device". Fair enough. Soo now, I need to locate the correct drivers on the internet, install them on an external drive, and then install them on the Vaio, to complete the transplant. Now me being the computer illiterate simpleton that I am, I haven't got a damned clue where to locate these drivers, or how to go about installing them. If you can link me to where to download the correct drivers I need for the model I listed in the first paragraph, and how to install them, I'll gift you any game you want. Or if you only want cheaper games, I'll even gift you a few.

Thanks in advance for the help, much appreciated :D

Did you try connecting your laptop using an Ethernet cable or phone cable ?

Ok I think I know what you need to do.

    1. Go here and select your exact model.

    2. Select your operating system.

    3. Scroll down to the network drivers and select the ethernet driver. It should say something like "RealTek Family Ethernet Driver".

    4. Download to your external hard drive.

    5. Move it over to your HP hard drive in your laptop.

    6. Double click it and follow the instructions to install it.

    7. Check it's installed by opening Device Manager and going to network adaptors, then you should see it listed there.

Thanks, I'll give this a try. If successful, you my friend are the winner. I'll update after trying.

EDIT: Damnit. After selecting the specific model and OS, I'm greeted with "Downloads for this product are not available through this website. Please contact your local HP representative for information on the specific update methods available for this product." Exactly what I didn't wanna see :(

Double-edit: I appreciate you taking the time to try to help. Although I didn't succeed, hit me with a PM and I'll gift you an app for your trouble

Drivers are programs that Windows or any OS uses to interact with a hardware device. Thus, what you need is the Ethernet driver for the Vaio laptop, not the HP laptop. This is because the HP hard drive merely stores the driver. It doesn't matter which hard drive you use; you need the drivers for the Vaio laptop to do anything. I'm very surprised your laptop is working at all right now.

Anyway, I tried searching for the drivers for your Vaio with no luck. Are you sure that's the model of laptop you have? Sony's support page has no information about the model you gave. Of course, it could be that your laptop isn't sold in my region. Which region did you buy the laptop from?

Or, alternatively, you should just install the drivers from your Vaio disc if you still have that. You don't need the HP drivers, you need the Vaio ones. So it doesn't matter if you don't have the HP driver disc.

If you don't have luck any other way try windows update or a software like driver genius. I really hate the fact computers don't come with all the relevant disks anymore as hard drives probably are the weakest link in hardware terms.

A more extreme solution would be to just install linux mint or ubuntu but I'd leave that for an if all else fails solution. (actually thinking about it more a fresh windows install might pick up the right drivers as well but again thats still quite an extreme fix to start afresh)

You should just install the drivers from your Vaio disc if you still have that. You don't need the HP drivers, you need the Vaio ones. So it doesn't matter if you don't have the HP driver disc.

In case you don't have the Vaio disc, here's what you need to do:

    1. Find your exact laptop model name (Near the edge of the Vaio screen)
    2. Try putting in the model information at this site. Just put the model code; don't put "Sony Vaio" or anything like that. Just the code. (PCG-71311L is an example, but this code didn't work at either site, so hopefully this isn't actually your model number.) Any drivers you can download will be under the "Updates" tab. (If this works, move to step 5)
    3. If that site doesn't find your laptop model or have the driver available, try this site (If your laptop model is found, it should be under the "Download" tab; move to step 5)
    4. If that doesn't work either, you'll need to find the manual for your Vaio laptop and find the name for the device you need the driver for. Alternatively - this may not be possible if your laptop cannot recognize the device - you can go to Control Panel (small icons view in upper right corner)>Device Manager>Network Adapters to find the name of your device (again, if your computer can recognize what it is). Then use this name and Google search "(name of device) driver for Vista" and see what comes up.
    5. After you have found the driver, download it and attempt to install to see if it works. Unfortunately, you may have to try several different drivers you may find on the internet; not all of them work for some reason.
    6. If, after all this, you cannot find your driver, contact Sony directly for support through e-mail or phone at the Sony support site for your region. You may end up having to pay $65 for a driver disc directly from Sony. But your laptop will work. You could also be very persuasive and convince them to send you the disc for free. Doesn't hurt to try.

Anyway, all this information was found at this website in case I've confused you. He probably explained it better than I.
