This is definitely challenging, I'm on level 4 and can't get much further. It's pretty grindy but the random elements keep it interesting. Artwork and sound is spot on retro! Will be waiting for updates though as the sound is a little glitchy, and important for timing your hits too (makes an impact sound when you get a successful hit, but not always!!!)
Came back to leave some quick impressions (only played for 10 min) but I agree with rpgh8r on the difficulty. I had a fairly hard time even finishing the tutorial, lol. I didn't have the sound on so I can't comment on that. I love the pixely graphics a lot. Basic idea - your character runs from enemy to enemy and a quick time event occurs where you have to tap on the right side of the screen to attack when the diamond shapes line up, and tap the left side to parry when the enemy attacks. The timing picks up pace after every consecutive blow, with the third being almost too fast for me. I'm sure it will get easier with practice as it seems to keep the same patterns so far. There are lots of weapon upgrades (tomahawks and axes) and spell books (used for allowing larger combos), and some items. All are bought with in-game blue gems from what I can tell so far. There are 3 different leaderboards, and non-Game Center achievements (bummer) to shoot for. Overall I'm happy with the game. Need more time with it to really determine my thoughts on it.
I can't quite make sense of your comment. Since I only asked to determine whether or not I should purchase Combo Queen, what bearing does the willingness of any number of other people to indulge in highly repetitive forms of entertainment have on my decision? (But as a general statement on the modern gamer's tendency to enjoy repetition, yeah, I'm right there with ya )
Really liking this game. Yes it's extremely hard, but also extremely fun. One of those games that keeps me coming back for one more game, then one more game, then a whole hour has passed.
Well, It's called combo QUEEN. Been waiting for this one. The dev had posted about it in the upcoming games forum. Seems like it will be a pretty good one!
Yea I purchased it. I like it. It's definitely my type of game. They've done a great job. It's fun and I love the art style. Also there is no IAP. I haven't experienced any crashes or lag. I like that it's all about skill. No pay to win! You really have to play the game lol I'm using an IPhone 5s with IOS 8. Now if they would add a male character Id be totally happy lol Billy
I just have a couple of suggestions I'd like to pitch to the Devs if they're reading the forum. 1. A possible hit counter for the Quen herself. Really! How many swipes does it take to kill her, because there seem to be a lot of surprise deaths. 2. A little bit of a tweak to the tap notifications. It doesn't feel as if there's enough visual or audio feedback as to when's the best time time to block or strike. It can get a little overwhelming. Other than that, I'm loving it so far!
Agree with point #1 for sure. I was thinking the same thing but forgot to mention that. The queen needs a health bar!
Yup, definitely reading! I'll try to fit #1 in the next update. Thank you for all your feedback! #2: Are you playing with sounds? Please listen for sounds and also look closely at the visual cues the monsters give. The steam visual cue indicates that they will do more hits than their minimum. There are more visual cues and special attacks that the other monsters have but I hope you guys can figure out those ones. Also you guys should check out the YouTube launch trailer instead. The video that touchy posted was not the best of videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymcLTt5lccs

Either way, I'm having a lot of fun with Combo Queen and looking forward to spending more time with her when I can give her the attention she deserves. #NoWonderImSingle jsrco Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Oct 15, 2009 2,134 1 38 Coordinator Seattle https://www.Fatthunder.com #35 jsrco, Jan 27, 2015 I am trying really hard to like this. But that hit window is to precise for playing with no sound. Top it off with a crazy progression curve.... How is dieing over and over, only to eventually level up (which also levels up the enemies) supposed to make sense? You would think that leveling up makes the game easier. But leveling up adds different attack patterns which doesn't help if you are just bad at these games. So maybe add a way to restart character progression? ramzarules Well-Known Member Sep 13, 2014 2,112 128 63 Greece #36 ramzarules, Jan 27, 2015 i was looking forward to this, but the "too difficult" impressions keep me away.. is there any future for an easier mode? i like difficult games, but only if they get progressively easier, and you get some small upgrade for your time, a la Wayward Souls. But if the enemies scale with you, then for me i think it would be a hopeless struggle... tmgalex Member Oct 12, 2014 22 0 0 Los Angeles, CA #37 tmgalex, Jan 27, 2015 Yes that's coming in the next update! You guys will get your Game Center achievements. I'm glad you're enjoying it. Try tapping on Queen's sprite when you're in the upgrade screen. The game is indeed a hard game as it was meant to be. I tried to design it so that the difficulty gradually increases as you progress. You're constantly being challenged by the game. If it was too easy then it would get boring quickly and the challenge would go away. It's easy to understand how the mechanics work but don't expect to master it right away. The training dummy is there to help people that want to practice their timings. I thought of setting back the user's progression a little bit if the game saw that the user was dying too much but I felt that would be a little insulting to the player. So you want there to be an option to completely erase all your data and start from the beginning? tmgalex Member Oct 12, 2014 22 0 0 Los Angeles, CA #38 tmgalex, Jan 27, 2015 I'm definitely going to be tweaking the difficulty but there won't be an easy mode. If you leveled up to a point where you were killing things in 1-2 hits, where are the high combos? The game's name is Combo Queen. The game gets easier but in a way that you get accustomed to the game and learn how to handle different situations better. All the monsters tell you exactly what they're going to do through their visual cues which even have sounds to help with reaction time. xx99 Well-Known Member Jan 19, 2013 127 0 0 IT Help Desk Michigan #39 xx99, Jan 27, 2015 Last edited: Jan 27, 2015 I think it's too hard too. I love the animations, and keeping an eye on them definitely helps with the timing. That said, the timing with the visuals seems off. I've played a lot of Expert guitar on Rock Band, and I am definitely one who syncs with the game visually instead of aurally. For what it's worth, I am playing with headphones and can hear the audio cues quite clearly. It's one thing for the game to be hard because it's genuinely challenging. It's another for it to be hard because it feels unresponsive or out of sync it feels unfair, even if the timing is actually very precise. Five ideas of things that would help: 1) Practice dummy for parrying. 2) Ability to calibrate the sync/timing. This feature works best if the audio sync and video sync are two different settings. 3) Give some kind of indication if I'm pressing too early or too late. It will help me learn what mistakes I am making. 4) Widen the timing window for a successful hit. 5) Give more visual heads-up for the enemy attacks. Maybe it's because I'm pressing too early, but it seems like there is no time at all for me to react to the flying crosshairs that indicate their attack. If I should be paying attention only to the enemy's animation, I would question why the crosshairs are even there. Keep the game hard. My only qualm is that it doesn't feel responsive. I don't think there's any need for a data reset option. Maybe a slightly gentler difficulty curve. It seems like my enemies went from dying in one hit to dying in four hits after just a few plays. Edit: I'm definitely getting better with practice. I was parrying too early. A "too early" pop-up would have helped me figure that out sooner. I've gotten a few 35 hit combos. The timing still feels a little off, like I have to purposefully delay my hits, but it's getting better. All the difficulty posts are a bit offputting though. Do you have a prospective changelog for that first update? (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
