I'd be wary of the last screenshot with what looks like a dual-currency of coins and gamepads. Plus the whole asynchronous "borrow your friends" sounds a bit too much like Glu... I am confirming there is no IAP but there is a dual currency model. "Gamepads" are less common currency acquired by beating levels (similar to three stars completion ranking but more practical) and used to unlock new combo moves/attacks or fighters (there were 4 playable characters in the beta build, including one Squids guest star). I found gamepads to be plentiful through gameplay. Gold coins are acquired in level after stomping foes and used to purchase temporary perks (HP refill, skip level, etc) or long lasting cross character boosts (like increased HP). There's a level based mode and an endless combo crew mode that unlocks some features for level based play. The swipe controls are fun and in some ways revolutionary but for people like me used to virtual buttons may take some adjusting. It's smartly designed. Swipe to attack, tap to defend, hold down and release to power attack. Spacial combo moves can be equipt involving things like two finger swipe in one of the cardinal directions. In order for swipe/tap to attack to work as seamlessly as it does there's an autoaim feature so movements don't have to be as precise as traditionally. Control sensitivity is nice with responses to gestures cross screen or just smaller movements in the corners. The graphics are colorful and there are multiple play modes. As pictured in the screenshots so many of the early levels take place in the same environment just with the addition of a few more enemies. There's a cool feature where if you get knocked down you can be saved by other users. Combo Crew is a fun game well worth $1.99 especially to brawler fans but autoaim streamlines things and levels can get repeatitve. strivemind Well-Known Member Aug 11, 2010 2,784 2 38 Designer Ottawa, Canada http://www.strivemind.com/ #14 strivemind, May 22, 2013 Glad to hear it's not IAP based, and instead more tied to a levelling/unlocking mechanic. The beta build options screen indicates Game Center Achievements and Leaderboards but they were not yet live; I think Game Center is included in the final build but can't definitively confirm. MidianGTX Well-Known Member Jun 16, 2009 3,738 10 38 #18 MidianGTX, May 22, 2013 So the early preview video drew a small amount of criticism for looking like the touchscreen equivalent of a button masher (namely frantic and random swiping), is this the case in the final product? Oh, and if you think automatic transmission in a car is "mandatory", you just plain suck undeadcow Well-Known Member Dec 4, 2010 9,486 2 36 Houston, TX #19 undeadcow, May 22, 2013 Last edited: May 22, 2013 My impression is that there is enough variety in the gestures (swipe, double finger swipe, tap, push/release) and a massive amount of "combos" that you unlock and equipt the combat did not feel mindlessly button mashy. The ability to customize the combos avaliable to you also adds a lot in terms of intentional tactics. When enemies motion to attack you then you also have to stop attack gestures to tap the screen if you'd like to block so that add sort of a conscious rhythm mechanic (just repeatedly tap mashing would probably get you killed and be no fun). However, the autoaim aspect streamlines things in a manner that was not my preference but might be a necessary evil (controls are precise but it feels automated at times). Also, it's silly how games even without IAP draw so much discussion of IAP. Although, with Combo Crew there is a framework serviceable to the possibility of future IAP althought that is not presently the case. cabdog Well-Known Member Mar 14, 2011 573 0 0 #20 cabdog, May 22, 2013 So, what's the general consensus on this one? Worth it? Or pick it up later when it price drops.. I'm not a huge 'brawler/ fighter' fan, but I get intrigued sometimes when there are mentions of different control schemes (No, not like The a bladeslinger Fail IMHO). It also does seem quite repetitive with so few environments, meaning it is strictly all about the brawling; I like games that mix it up and have more depth. ps.
