I completely do see the other viewpoint. My major point is the progression might be steep at first but not impossible. Especially with so many ways to get cards. As Developers mentioned a solo difficulty option is coming which will help alot.

I respect your feelings toward this developer. I agree that they make quality titles. Their previous wargames were well made games. I also agree that they have the right to use any pricing model that they want. It is their business, and they can manage it however they like. Conversely, it is the right of consumers to have opinions on the products that they purchase.

I will likely give CM another spin. I enjoyed the game, and hope the dev addresses these concerns in the Dec update.

I am no whale, only bought the tripler, may or may not buy some coins at some point, but that point isn't here today ;)

That said, *understanding* is different than agreeing or even supporting that other viewpoint. I understand them just fine (it's fueled by impatience and a sense of entitlement and/or an unsuitable temperament for the game and its genre), I just don't care very much, nor do I really see how they're useful to the community or the devs.

Goodness knows I have no desire to see anyone try and recreate endless money sinks like M:TG on iOS, but a "free" CCG is not the same beast as Tiny Farming Miner Running Kabloosh! "free". It's not an ultra casual affair, it's not an instant gratifier. It's a hobby of sorts, for which you determine the amount of time, effort, and, yes, money, you're going to put into it, but it's not just going to come to you wrapped in a pretty bow.

It's a matter of correct attitude: you should know what sort of a hill you're creating for yourself tackling a CCG unwilling to invest anything at all in it (or, as I did, just the tripler so far), and if you didn't know ahead of time, you're going to find out soon enough. I mean, it is a CCG. That means thousands of cards to acquire for maximum competitiveness and variety. That means dealing with vast inequality of deck power and collection sizes as you play over a lot longer period of time than most iOS games remain on anyone's device. That means finding out that after you thought you finally had everything you needed, there's a new set of cards released that shake up the meta game and put your right back in pursuing the "perfect" collection.

The genre is what it is. What makes CM different than most is that, with time, anyone can get anywhere without spending any more money than they are comfortable giving to the devs (even if that amount is $0). Changing up the game to appeal to those who see "mental paywalls" or are too inflexible in their thinking to see how their collection could be made effective to earn coins, or who just flat out think their impatience earns them free cards so they don't feel chafed would just weaken the game for those who do enjoy the CCG aspect (and are therefore more likely to support the devs).

Agreed. I am about half way through hard and have only bought the tripler. Have started winning quite a few multiplayer games too.

    Nice discussion,

Have u guys tried elementary monsters decks? 80% of the deck is filled with common and uncommon spell cards costing 3 or less mojo. These decks are very competitive and do not require a lot of Rare or Legendary cards.

    Try it :)

Um...all Elementals are Legendary, so I'm not clear how this deck does "not require a lot of Rare or Legendary cards". Its actually one of the harder decks to build. My son, with 204 out of the 308 cards, cant build one.

The best deck most people can build is a balanced deck. http://www.rubicondev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1759. It should be competitive with all specialized decks or at least the vast majority of specialized decks in the vast majority of situations.

I just helped my almost 9 year old clear hard. He is trippler only. While he played a ton of multiplayer, he frankly plays like his age in some ways. He needed help crafting a proper deck and with 5-8 of the harder levels (whether in Easy, Medium or Hard), but did the vast majority on his own.

IAP isnt required. Most people wont need to play as much multiplayer as he did or get as many cards as he did before finishing single player.

Since beating the hard levels are fresh in my mind from helping him, I updated my tips for beating the AI thread. http://www.rubicondev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1819

Also have deck building tips linked in the prior post.

Out of about 40 cards u need only about 6-8 legendary elementals in my experience for a Elemental deck which as i said u only need about 80% common/uncommon spell cards other 20% being elementals. It is one of the easier decks to build, never said it was the easiest.

Hey rubicon please check on battle 64461 and user named espionage as he seems to have hacked your game and every time I play him it just sit there and then gives me the network drop message and kicks me he always has 188 cards and always only with him this happens. Man you would think u guys would have shit implemented against these kind of ppl and fix it for the ppl that play for fun and have spend money on your game since day one.

Sadly, I hardly ever have the time to play the game (12-hour mandatory work days are kicking my behind), much less design decent decks, but I've definitely won the "game within the game."

I'm up to a collection of 288/308 (including all Heroes and Elementals), all through legitimate transactions, and only ever bought the Tripler.

It's all about properly advertising the game in a few key locations (back when I HAD spare time), explaining how the referral benefits work, and actively discouraging players from using my referral code. Instead, I suggest the obvious - find another player that plans to do a purchase and 'trade codes' so you'll both obtain double profits.

Through the power of reverse psychology, I've obtained seven referrals over time, and two of them were people that apparently bought the Barrel of Rubicoins.

And people say that a Psychology degree isn't profitable. ;)

I hope the reward for the challenge mode goes up; as it currently stands at 20g a battle (and even considering the tripler) it's painfully slow to get enough coins to buy new chests once you are done with the single player content.
Considering that the level of difficulty of the challenge games is on par or harder than hard games i believe the reward should be 60g
Btw i bought the tripler and the 6000g pack (just as a background information)

i agree with ya completely; i was far too deep into MTG back in the day and completely understand that you need to pay to be competitive. i guess my real issue is that solo play still needs to be fun up to point even without any purchases. i know pvp is a whole nother ball game, but i cant even imagine beating the hard mode now if i made a brand new account warrior deck and didnt buy anything or get any referral credits. even if one could accomplish that, QB difficulty ramp up makes a purely solo mode end game unfun.

my worry is the barrier to entry for those just picking up the game. heres hoping updates will really come for those who need them.

by now i have found my new strategy for QB and pretty much win 80% of the time but my deck is pretty stacked with plenty of good uncommons and a few rares. so far my collection is at 212/308 with two heros and 3 legendaries (one of which is actually playable lol). its tough hearing the really successful ones with "only a tripler" have that extensive coin income from referrals, but i do respect that they are doing their part towards the monotization of this game. i might as well throw mine out there lol: m5x82ky

Beginning Monday, November 18, 2013, ChaosProdigy will be hosting Combat Monsters Community Tournament #1. This tournament will be held with each entrant having one match per week. You will be open to play your match whenever you have time in the week, and will report the result to the email i created for this tournament: [email protected]. The tournament will have a number of swiss paired rounds based on entrants, with a top 8 elimination finals. I will be reporting scores, and pairings here on this post on the forums, and on http://www.challonge.com.

    Format:
Best 2 of 3 match ups unless both opponents agree up front to do best 3 out of 5, this must be agreed to by both players before they play their first game, take a screenshot of this agreement. This will be 1 on 1 private game. Each opponent has 1 free map "mulligan" where they can request 1 time at start of game BEFORE any move is made by them: map change. In this case both opponents quit the game and re-que again. This can only be done once per opponent. Keep track of each Battle Replay. You must report the Battle Replay to me and do not share your battle replay number anywhere including forums or chat as we want to keep winners and losers decks a secret from other compettitors. If found in breach this is grounds for disqualification.
Composition:. No more than 2 of any Legendary card, no more than 3 of any Rare card in your deck. Exception is if you have more than 60 cards you are allowed 3 Legendary and 4 Rare max of any given card.

    Reporting Results:
Both players must submit results battle replay to avoid errors. Both players will submit an email to [email protected], the email subject should read “Results Player 1 v. Player 2 for week #” Replacing Player 1 and 2 with respective player names and the # with the corresponding week number. In the email, you will need to include who won each game of the best 2 out of 3 or if agreed by both players 3 out of 5. Any type of tie breakers will be judged on by myself.

Unreported Results or Match Didn’t Happen:
In the event the paired players cannot make their match happen in a given week, the round will be scored as a draw. Draws reduce your overall standing and will hurt your chances into getting into the top 8 elimination finals. Players who do not report in that they were unable to find time for the match will count as failure to report. Email [email protected] and inform me that you were unable to arrange a time with an opponent to avoid counting as unreported.
Failure to report results will count as a double loss. This will have a very adverse effect on your standings in the swiss rounds of the competition, and extremely hinder your chances at a top 8 spot. You can also email me correspondence between yourself and a non responding opponent who is not replying. I may reserve the right to judge a player forfeit and award a win to the active player who tried to get a time and day going.

    What’s in it for me?
Why enter? Well cmpetitive play has to start with the community although tournament feature is coming in future. This format lets you get 3 competitive games at least 1 a week for a good number of weeks. It is a learning experience win or lose. The exact number will be based on attendance. That gets you points for each match you play, just for participating.
The future, being part of something simple like this shows Rubicon that we are excited for a competitive scene. Which will give them more incentive to give us the tools to have bigger and more lucrative events.

Prizes: I was going to put up $5 per participants who can complete at least 6 rounds of swiss tournament, e.g. Fought 6 opponents for 6 weeks in a row: $5 via Paypal but I need to see how many participants will join the tournament before i can pledge a reward. (We have thousands of players in this game!)Additional prize support for top spots will be discussed between myself and Rubicon staff once we see how many participants are entered in the tournament.
Lastly it’s FREE, this event costs you nothing but time playing the game! Spread the word for chance at better prizes!

Please Reply to this thread http://www.rubicondev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=2034 with any questions. You can also reply here to enter tournament but also email me at [email protected] so i have your email. Emails will be shared with participants so u guys can set a time and day for your matches.

As seen on Combat monsters official forums: http://www.rubicondev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=2034

    * if all participants are on Rubicon forums we may use Forum Private Message instead of email.

    Funny story

I often recommend games to my friends who don't read toucharcade. So i got a friend of mine sucked in for this one as well. As I asked him how he's doing in online battles he replied "mostly fine but I always get crushed by someone named chaosprodigy". So I told him that's completly fine :)
