Thx - you wont be disappointed! I can't give you the exact numbers but early adopters will be encouraged with a very good initial price. Chillingo and h.grenade, will be announcing plans and pricing very soon.
Don't undersell yourself though, this game does look amazing. £2.99 ($4.99) would be more than fair for this, although I'd pony up even if it was higher.
Thanks different! Its not a matter of under or overselling. We are just finalizing our strategy and as a developer you have to think about the fact that there are 37 million iPhones and iPod. I would prefer to make the game less expensive and have more people playing it. If it can build a solid community of regular players then we can add so much more stuff to the game. Take multiplayer for example - I would love to be able to go head-to-head against other gamers in a challenge for XP that will ultimately drive the global leaderboard. As an indy dev going in a whole new direction requires a ton of new code, game design, balancing and testing to make it a worthy experience. Basically, it's expensive and time consuming. So if we sell it cheaper, get a bigger community behind it then the sky is the limit to the content we can add. One other idea is to have "upgrade" DLC packs available like you might get with Rock Band. It would include a new interactive audio set (music tracks), sound effects, visual effects, samples, voice overs, enemies and arenas. I would also love to get some of my favorite musicians involved that I think would make great content too and offer those as upgrade packs in the future. The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, DJ Keoki, Fluke, Orbital, Crystal Method, Underworld, Daft Punk, Rammstien, Photek, Atari Teenage Riot, the list goes on and on. The more successful the game become the more likely that record labels will want to partner with us. The long term success of CS.One will really all come down to word of mouth. If we have a core group of gamers that love the game, like I think we will, then they will get all of their friends involved and talk about it everywhere to help spread the word. We are planning some giveaways for our hardcore fans too. Lots to look forward to, in the next few months! And, we definitely have some free upgrades planned right now!!
I'm glad you're taking advantage of iPhone 3.0, se7en. On that topic, maybe you could create matches and leaderboards using Peer2Peer connectivity? That would be sweet.
The App Store certainly will become more viable for developers once the DLC option is available. iDracula for example started at 59p, but had difficulty in the charts when the price was increased. Zen Bound started at £2.99 and judging by the number of iTunes reviews, a whole lot of people purchased the game. Of course I don't know exactly how many, but if you started at that price point, you can always lower later. £3 is not much for a game, but people have made it into a big deal. If no-one's complaining about the price of your game, it's too cheap. Anyway, best of luck with the game. I'll definitely look into doing a review on it when it's available.
gscal - Yeah it cool to think about the possibilities of multiplayer. We just would to do it in a way that is seriously kick ass. Not just do it because it's possible. A lot of games just don't translate well to multiplayer or co-op. different - yeah people will complain about a game for $3 and spend more at Starbucks for a latte! The thing that I find interesting is expectations based on price points. At $.99 you will end up with a lot of people buying the game just because and bitching about it. At $5 people are only going to buy it that are really interested and they have a vested interest in learning how to play it. They wont write it off immediately as crap. Good games are often not pick up and play. When I first played Rez I thought it looked and sounded amazing but I got seriously frustrated because I had never played an "on rails" game. I stuck with it and it has become one of my favorite all time games. If it was free or cheap I would have dropped it, but it cost me something so I gave it a chance. "£3 is not much for a game, but people have made it into a big deal. If no-one's complaining about the price of your game, it's too cheap." Haha, so true.
Yes, I see where you're coming from. A lot of games just have multiplayer/co-op feeling tacked on at the last minute, just to say that they have it. Terrible online functions is a major turnoff for me when browsing the app store. But hey, so far, it sounds like you guys cant do anything wrong with this game.
Haha, I'm sure someone will disagree with that ; ) But thank you. We just want to make it the best experience possible. I personally just hate buying a game only to find out that it completely sucks!!
I've seen it ; ) There are a couple of post over on http://appgamer.net/ - one on the home page and one in the news section. They did a full interview which will be coming out any day. It's overly opinionated, sarcastic, smart assed and insightful I hope. haha, good times.
In case you didn't see the insult thread here on TA... it has been addressed in the sense that it stays unless Apple makes me remove it! I doubt that is going to happen because all new Apps now have to be submit through the 3.0 SDK, which mean they can be rated 17+ - NIN just got through. Either way if you don't like it don't play it. Entirely up to you.
I really want to buy this though, It just seems a little misplaced and in conflict with the rest of the game. The overall design of the game looks great & very much my type of game. It just irritates me when it comes on screen because it could have been so easily ommited or replaced with another expletive. I'm really not trying to be impertinent over this, I only want this game to be great!
Big Albie - There are two controllers available A. Basic and B. Advanced. With the advanced controller you can also setup your own config ie. Ship Speed, Rotation Speed and Aim Damping which works kind of like iron sights in a 3rd person shooter allowing you to slow down the rotation while fine tuning your aim when the fire button is being pressed. This was a key feature because if something is coming up on your six, you need to be able to spin fast but just setiing the rotation too fast doesn't allow you any control to line things up. The Basic controller is very easy to learn, just touch somewhere around the fixed onscreen ring (bottom left corner) and the ship will face that direction more like Geo Wars. You can also just keep your thumb onscreen and kind of "steer" the ship. I talk more about it in the article that's coming out from AppGamer... I will post it here when it goes live but I can assure you that Pal Van Marrsterhausen will not like my language or tone ; ) haha Paul - The game actually has one of 12 sayings that the System Admin fires at you when you die. They come up randomly so when shooting the video I can't really control which ones come up : ) FYI - I am not trying to be confrontational either. I spent 22 years working for clients making all of their stupid suggestions because I needed the check. I have pretty much given that up to be an indy game developer. But that doesn't mean I am going to do what's politically correct or what anyone expects. I am indy for a reason ; ) I personally play mostly mature games and watch mature tv shows and movies and h.grenade will be doing as much as we can to push the envelope in casual gaming because I am sick to death of "cute." I also never signed up anywhere to create "mainstream" content, I'm just a guy trying to do something that I can be proud of when it's done. Does that change your opinion at all?
Many thanks for the kind reply Se7en. I understand your need to uphold your artistic integrity as an independent developer, so i suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree on "Sup Bitch" It is a pity though as i still do feel it's a modicum inessential & doesn't fit well with the overall superb design of the game. (reading the forums I'm not the only one who thinks this way) I'll still purchase it on day one as it does look like a lot of care, attention & passion has gone into the construction of this game. I'm all for supporting talented independent developers. You win!
