The intro animation from the DS/PS1 version is not there, but I'm not far enough in to see I'd they includes the sequences in the actual game. As someone else mentioned, the animated cutscenes always felt tacked on in the DS version. For me, the face that te iOS version includes all the content of the DS version is far more important.
Does it have the original SNES intro, then? I always missed that in all subsequent versions of the game.
It is odd that they would spend so much effort on the sound and so little on image quality considering the relative importance of each.
I first played Chrono Trigger (Original SNES version) way back in 1995 as a little kid and also with my best friends. Now 16 years later, i am so happy and proud that you guys are able to play it again on the iOS devices and that this game is still so highly acclaimed. Someone might have mentioned it before, but anyway i would just like to hint you guys that this game has 13 different endings. It is one the 1st RPG ever to feature multiple endings, that made this game so unique with high replay value. I hope you guys enjoy Chrono Trigger as much as i do, as glorious childhood memories keep pouring back while i holding the game again on my iPhone.
Actually it does. Just leave it running without pressing the screen after the title screen has loaded.
The part where you have to chase the rat across the rafters is going to be next to impossible with the mediocre controls. Not looking forward to that part unless they slowed the rat down.
Echo, this is my first time playing Chrono Trigger and i'm really confused... I don't know how old the original game is but there are a lot of things that are putting me off. 1) The sounds suck, there are no sounds for the environment, or misc stuff. The music is either for background music or for when there is combat. Maybe it's just a bug for me. 2)I'm very confused with the combat but I'm willing to persist in finding out what's most effective. 3)I heard there were cut scene's in other versions and I'm really curious to see what those were like since they were "taken out". It's still a fun game, but there is a lack in direction where I would just run around the same areas for an hour trying to find where I'm supposed to go. Sound really hurt my feelings for the game though, as well as there being no tutorial for combat. I even have it on wait and it's still confusing. Maybe i'm just being extremely bad.
Cheers mate - and thanks for being detailed! Anyone else? I'm just trying to understand if this game is still good without nostalgia getting in the way. (it sure is a funny beastie, nostalgia)
You seem to compleatly miss that the original was viewed on low resolution SD CRT TV's, Having sharp edges would be totally different then the original intended way of viewing the game. I am a big time M.A.M.E. player and I run a filter that semi-interpolates as well as adds the rbg stripe pattern to the screen to replicate the old crt monitor looks. Interpolation at this resolution doesn't lose any detail, and helps smooth out harsh edges that were introduced due to better display technology. Could chrono trigger have been better? Sure, but interpolation to reproduce the intended effect because of its native resolution is not a BAD thing. And everyone just wash the missing cinemas from your mind, you aren't missing a damn thing. They were added for the PSone version and were in no way planned for the original.
Those cinematics were abominations that clashed with the style of the game, sort of like the CGI in Lucas' "restored" Star Wars. This is a SNES era game and exaggerated anime style cartoon video never fit and to me ruins part of the whimsical character details native to the gameplay art.
Somehow this looks far, far better on my TV through the Wii's Virtual Console. No funny filtering at all. Why didn't they do the same here? It looks awful.
I'm enjoying it as a first timer, and I remember my friends playing it back in the day. The floating joystick controls took some getting used to (and I might find Secret of Mana easier to enjoy after using these controls). It's charming overall so far, and the game has a lot of character. I quite like the soundtrack also, and the graphics are fine to me. Only about 90 mins in, and I'm excited to see where it goes! Probably the first of many playthroughs
can anyone beat the drinking game in the fair? hard time beating it haha i guess there will be lots of hard parts cuz of the control like the rat part mentioned earlier~~ but overall I LOVE THIS GAME!! SNES
---------------------------------- CT Saving System is like FF7 go find a Green Sparkling Light in Dungeons or Area // or go into map view and save... There is a option for quick save I believe for I never used it since I dont like quick save in RPGs but there is a Save option to quick save n terminate game. Edit: Its called Bookmarking
