Well said..I actually have the snes and a Psx custom eboot as well as the Psx classic that was just released on the playstion network store on my PsP ....also I have the Ds version too and i must say i cant justifiy why the hell I bought this...I just assumed the damn port would be good or at least polished better...I really just wanted it on my phone to be honest....BUT now i play it I have several issues....the running on the controls can be annoying no matter how much you turn down the gameplay speed....the graphics stink....the battle menu is annoying when selecting a different enemy to hit...not to mention it seems "in the way" when fighting....Im kinda bummed that i jumped the gun, even after the fail they threw at us with FFT...but i guess thats what being a rpg addict entails

A lot of people here are talking about the poor graphics and control. Well they are right.

The graphics aren't just blurry. They are dull, dark and muddy. It's difficult to see what is going on. This is especially true during battles as the tiny portraits make it very hard to see who I'm healing. The analogue joystick is totally unsuited to the game and it's crying out for a DPad. It really is hard to move about effectively and it doesn't help that the select button is a tap. However I do seem to be able to play this one handed so I can play it on my commute. Not a patch on FFIII though.

I have put in about 2 hours and have just beaten the first boss and my iPhone is down to 29% when I would normally expect about 50%. I doubt 600Mb of 8 bit audio doesn't help that.

I probably will play it some more to see what the fuss is about but all I've learnt so far is that Squenix don't playtest their games.

The extra dungeon isn't anything special. It's just re-used art assets. They literally copy-pasted pieces of the games main dungeons and remixed them into one, with slightly more difficult enemy recolors on top. The missed music track is hardly a tragedy, as the game already has a fantastic OST. A single song doesn't merit buying a game IMO. And, finally, the translation isn't a selling point for anything but the nichest of niche fans. Most people buying this won't even know it has a new translation, never mind notice a big difference. They'll be buying it simply because it's a nostalgic purchase. Besides, there was nothing wrong with the original translation. It made perfect sense. The new one is a slightly better, but it's not a world changing improvement. This isn't Final Fantasy Tactics we're talking about...

I don't disagree those are things that help justify a re-purchase for some old fans, but they're not game changers. Most people are buying this title because they never had a chance to play it before, they want to carry it around on their phone, or because they have fond memories of it. Things like new translations don't translate into sales. Mario Kart Wii didn't sell millions because millions of people wanted to play HD versions of N64 race tracks. Only the most hardcore of the hardcore cares about that sort of thing :p.

And I agree the PSX loading times aren't ideal, but they're not atrocious. The menu is the only real sore spot. I'd take a few seconds of wait time over the uglier aspects of the iOS port.

Really? What would make you think save games from PC based emulators would work on an iOS game port?

I'm not saying these things are game changers, just that it is only fair to mention them as selling points. It certainly worked for the DS version, and what's good for the goose...

I think since the marketing, buzz, and reviews of the DS versions weighed greatly on the new features then more should be said that this is based on that version for good and ill. I say ill, because if it was based on the SNES version it wouldn't be so darn blurry.

Anyone tried it on older devices? If it's working or not? Or if it's laggy as hell?

the text size on the DS is not giant, especially when compared to the SNES version—the words actually fit on the menu.

the menus are not the same either, it (DS menu) has been completely revamped (shortcut assignments, menu/battle layout, window design, second screen, etc) on the DS. heck, the battle options don't even show up on the main screen, unless you want them to.

health bars? how much can you change health bars? well, the health bars now have their own little box (instead of one big one), each with an avatar of the respective characters next to them. :)

oh, neat! but still, you should really consider picking up the 1995 OST set (only three discs) when you get the chance. you'll be able to purchase and own the original and officially released Squaresoft (yes Squaresoft!) OST in physical form with packaging.

Of course, this probably won't matter to you if you aren't a fanboy, collector, or a hard copy lover like me. in which case, it's all gravy. ;)

If it were not for the graphics, I would be voting for this game hands down just to raise awareness of this amazing game.

i dont think i can play this with the sub par controls and graphics... sorry :( but maybe i'll work on the comp emulator some other time. the size just doesn't warrant me to play a game when the quality just isn't that great. i have other games i need to save space for..

i dont totally hate square but they need to find out how to do ports better. it's odd that no one working with them gives them proper ios feedback (or maybe they don't listen).

however i will say one of the best games/ports on the ipod is FF3. that thing is brilliant in every way. i guess some will say the story is lacking (there's barely a story in there really) but everything else is top notch. it may even be better than the "real" version and you don't even have to send people emails to get the special quests!

Been playing this on the iPad 2 in 2x and so far i find the controls much smoother with the larger screen. Graphically it does look pretty blurry though, shame that squeenix didnt make this universal. According to Facebook they also do not have plans for an iPad native version so if you don't mind the blur graphics I suppose it's an okay purchase. Will definitely try Retinapad with this once I get around to jailbreaking.

It's an absolute classic and I'm really happy they released it on iPhone for those that haven't any other way of playing it. I prefer playing it on the DS though, given the option

    Game Impressions

After playing for some time here are my impressions.

First of all – it is a typical, Square Enix lazy port. I really don’t understand why they keep premium prices of their games (FF Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana) when they can’t make something I could consider as a complete product, polished (nearly) to perfection. There is always some kind of a flaw(s) in their games that can be really irritating – blurry text in FF Tactics, weird position of joypad in Secret of Mana, joypad in Chrono Trigger, etc etc. Nothing game breaking to me, but still many of these flaws don’t require months of coding to get them fixed.

The controls in Chrono Trigger could be easily fixed. Just give me an option for fixed position of the joypad, and add a button somewhere on the screen so I can switch to running/walking while playing. Is it really that hard? Who thought that virtual, touch joypad is a good idea for fluent running/walking switching? That just proves they really need to work more and refine touch controls in their games. Fixed joypad + speed switch somewhere on the screen, and steering could be much more natural and touchscreen friendly.

The graphics. I’m playing on my 3GS so I don’t have a problem with blurriness, but even here it could be a bit more sharp. I love pixel art games, and I think certain games look better when pixels are a bit softened.
Maybe someone could enlighten me – when a company is porting an old game, does it take a lot of work and coding to add those graphics filtering options that we can use on PC emulators (HQ filter, interpolation, NTSC filter etc.)? That would be really great, everyone could play the game that looks like they want it to…
Oh, and the font type they used really doesn’t look good.

The sound quality on the other hand is really amazing. Lossless format + really good headphones and I’m drifting away on waves of nostalgia :) CT soundtrack was always one of my all time favorites, so actually I can live with this monstrous file size.

All in all I don’t regret the 10 bucks I’ve spent on this game. But as a 28 year old guy this purchase was made with a strong nostalgia factor, and because I wanted to have CT in my pocket. Younger generation can probably have difficulties in understanding the magic of this game.

Nevertheless I think Square Enix should get some kind of a warning sign, or at least a flick on the nose from Appstore customers, wake up and start to make products that are 100% suited and polished for the iOS platform.
