Is this game good for RPG newbies? The graphics look stunning and feedback is insanely positive. I will buy it if I will enjoy it, but the closest I've got to RPG is Mario and Luigi RPG (ages ago) and Pokemon (ages ago again).
It almost goes without saying that I, and it appears the vast majority of others, disagree with your assessment and that of Aurora's (which is basically a given, he hates almost everything), but I'll say it anyway. I just don't see how this is boring or lacking story. That's fine to have a differing opinion of course, I just don't see it. The only real issue I have (which is nowhere near a deal breaker) is that the map system is pretty tough to comprehend. Other than this, I feel that we have 2 true console titles on our devices now. GTA (which is a port) and this. The fact that this is exclusive to this platform rockets it up the charts in my book. I'm amazed I'm playing this on my phone.
Damn, I missed a complete stage and now I am facing the boss of all bosses (I guess) and wow, what an enemy, what a way to this enemy. People who are saying there is no story, didn't reach that far, clearly
Once again you make a stupid assessment of other people. I hate almost everything? So everything that you like is "everything" now? Go back to my post and find a single part where I said "I hate Chaos Rings"? Can't? Then STFU before you make a moronic comment like that. Since you obviously can't read I'll re-word it: Chaos Rings is an excellent game and well worth the price tag, however it's just not as impressive as I thought it would be; therefore if it had a hype meter of 10/10, right now I am about 7/10 hyped about it. Also, what're you disagreeing with? That the game isn't dungeon 1-10 -> 11-20 -> 21-30? That the game doesn't get repetitive in combat? People like you who put their own opinion above others and try to make other people sound bad just because you have a different opinion are pathetic.
Yeah I get the impression some of these review sites don't have any RPG players. Comparisons with Chrono Trigger? Action RPG? Seriously?
Aurora, I'm going to try to tone down how I really feel out of respect to other people who may not know much of your posting history here. Let's just suffice to say that if we did a poll of regular contributors to this forum asking what your general opinion on games are, I believe that most would agree that your posts are OVERWHELMINGLY negative. It's somewhat your M.O. in my opinion. That's fine, you have to have dissenting views every so often, but when the majority of your posts are about how poor games are it tends to dampen the effect. First of all, I never mentioned that it's about you not liking what I like. I don't give a shit if you like what I like. All I know is that as someone who is on this forum almost daily, I can basically count on seeing something negative when it's a post with your name attached. You say this game isn't as impressive as you thought it would be. I get the impression that there IS no game that's going to meet all of your expectations. I also think it's funny how you bitch about "people like you" that make blanket statements about other people. Irony, much?
Is the combat in this game super slow (like the old ps1 FF games) or more towards modern jrpgs (FFXIII, tales of series, etc)?
I think the comparison to Chrono Trigger is not completely bonkers (I see a few parallels, including the use of a staging area with gates to different worlds, gene/tech based magic system, the use of combined attacks). As to quality, that's a matter of taste; personally Chaos Rings grabbed me faster than Chrono Trigger, but I can't imagine that it has any plot turns as shocking as the trial in CT, or characters as memorable as Frog and Robo. The action RPG thing was just a head scratcher, because the rest of the review wasn't really that ignorant. As to comments about story, the one thing I really like about CR is that it takes a fairly original approach to it (for an RPG, anyway)-- it reminds me a bit of The Prisoner, combined with aspects of Lost and, as has been mentioned, Battle Royale. It's a matter of taste, obviously, but I much prefer it to the typical, ponderous "let's find the crystial/relic/sword and save the world" plots that are usually par for the course in this genre. And, for what it's worth, I'm not finding the combat repetitive at all, at least not more so than in FF7 or CT.
OK so finally beat the first level. Earned ENC so I can turn off Encounters, but it turns off ALL monsters??? Now i'm just running through the whole level until the boss?
If I was going to compare it to any of Square's games it would probably be FF VIII (Which I just recently finished again thanks to the awesomeness that is PSN).
I bought this with my iTunes voucher and was wondering, being an RPG n00b, could one of you give me a few pointers, or what not/i should do?
Should: - Read through all the tutorials very carefully as well as be comfortable with all menus/sub-menus to understand all you can. - Read all of the storyline/Talk to all NPC's. - Understand the characters, battle mechanics, and elemental strengths and weaknesses to gain advantage against the enemy(ies). - Always plan ahead. - Always play with strategy instead of mindless attacking. - Have fun. Should Not: - Just blow through the game mindlessly. - Don't skip battles too often. - Don't skip any information you haven't read yet. That should be a good start to get you going. Have fun.
Well, it was mainly that I was very tempted to just stop reading the STP review when I read the lines: 'the iPhone finally has its own triple-A Square Enix RPG that actually reaches the heights of a Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger' Now I know that this is very subjective, but in my mind this game does not even nearly reach the levels of FF or CT (and I'm pretty sure they were comparing to them quality-wise). Don't get me wrong, this is a great game, the best RPG on the platform by some distance, but it's not a full fledged console RPG, and neither should anyone expect it to be (which some people seem to be doing).
Squarezero, how would you compare this game to crisis core for the PSP? This is an unbelievable game (I tried it out on a friends device) but I am one of the few who wasn't impressed by crisis core, because of the totally random levelling system (the stupid DMV wheel) and the button mashing nature of the game. How does chaos rings compare in terms of gameplay? I understand that it is turn based rather than action based, which probably adds an extra layer of strategy that was sorely missing in crisis core. How does the levelling system work? Is it the typical knock out opponent, gain xp, and when u have a certain amount of xp you level up (which I actualy like)? Or is it that stupid random levelling of crisis core? Thanks for your thoughts and impressions-a comparison of the two games would be much appreciated
np. to add...always keep an eye out for chests/secrets. I like to interact with everything possible just in case.
