Man I want this game, but really don't want to regret it when a non universal iPad version inevitably comes out.

Disclaimer: I've never played final fantasy. RPG wise, I've not played many. Quite unfamiliar with the genre. I never had a Nintendo. Loosely related games I've enjoyed include Diablo, Battle for Wesnoth. (on the desktop) On the iPhone I played through Underworlds and quite enjoyed it, wanted more. Have played Sword of Fargoal a lot and Wolenstein RPG, and Battle for Wesnoth and various other TBS or RTS titles. These are different games, but I thought I'd best preface my comments with this as I don't know RPGs at all, specifically JRPGS.

I didn't buy FF1 or FF2 as I never played them on early consoles and haven't liked other iPhone retro ports of ancient titles unless I enjoyed them back then. (EG I played through Doom a lot, but wouldn't have had I not been familiar with the game)

Chaos Rings, is really good. Very polished, I'm enjoying the storyline so far. I've played for an hour so far. Died twice whilst experimenting with items and seeing how everything works. This will be an awesome game to play in lunch breaks as it doesn't need constant hand holding.

For those who'd like to know, it runs fine so far on OS 4.0. Playing for an hour ran the battery to 71% from 100%. That's fine. This is a 3GS.

It's a great looking game, the cut scenes work well. It's nice having cut scenes rendered by the hardware instead of full motion video. It's one of the few games where I sit back and get immersed in it and forget that I'm using the iPhone, the hardware just disappears.

What does the ENC button do which suddenly appeared near the map? I can tap it an it gets crossed out. Can't find anything about it in help :)

Anyway for those who haven't tried this style of game I can say that this is the one to get started on. Well I'm very happy with it anyway.

I'm the same. However, I feel this will work as is rather well on the as it has a 'wherever your thumb is' style movement pad, instead of a fixed one. This means it will work anywhere on screen so the controls are well suited to iPad. Combat/Attack is lower right but you can also tap the ! symbols in the game or swipe/tap on monsters.

In 2X mode it will look more retro certainly but it looks so nice as it is that I don't think that scaled up it will be too bad.

    Doing nothing of importance.

You probably got the ability "Encounter" in one of your equipped gene trays. Once you press the "Enc" button and it gets crossed out, that means you turned off random encounters, so monsters won't attack you when you're walking around the world. Press it again, and it turns random encounters back on.

BTW, this game is mind-blowing. I just got the first ring playing as Escher and Musiea, and I can already tell that I'll be playing this game extensively until I've beaten everyone's storyline. It's that good.

Seriously one of the best looking iphone games to date, and completely smooth on the iphone 3gs. Controls are excellent and precise, awsome enemy designs...it does feel an awful like a FF spin off but hey it's still a great game in it's own right. Feels awsome doing the next level bracket beyond you up and finding some awsome weapon randomly in a chest. I'll shut up now so I can carry on playing it...and stop reading this forum and buy it.

This game is not only the best rpg on the appstore but quite possibly the best game as well. The game just oozes polish, even gta felt a bit rough around the edges due to the fact it was a port. But it is obvious that this was built from the ground up for iphone.

Technically, it is one of the best on the appstore. The graphics look great and the animations are fluid all set against good-looking pre-rendered backgrounds. The game runs with no lag whatsoever on my ipod touch 2g, and as others have said the battery drain is surprisingly low.

The story is interesting, as each character pair have their own backstory that is slowly revealed, while also slowly learning more about the situation they are placed in. Unlike so many other rpg games this story, while nothing profoundly great really did make me care and want to keep playing.

The gene system is very cool and actually makes grinding more fun. Though it's also important to realize that grinding isn't necessary and sort of happens naturally if you leave random encounters on. The boss battles are epic in scale with some truly impressive 3d models that fill your entire screen.

Essentially, you really need to buy this game. Anyone complaining about the price needs to understand that this is not a normal iphone game. The three dollars that make it more expensive than other premium games like cod: zombies, GTA:CW and Street fighter give you an original experience that is better than anything on the platform to date.

I don't remember the layout but each turn (green orb picked up) allows you to teleport in place of a blue cube, swapping your position with the cube. This costs a turn.

One thing that stumped me in the 2nd challenge room is that you can also swap places with a green turn piece, this becomes important later on.

Yeah, that's one of the only 2 things I don't like about this game. The puzzles don't clearly state that you can switch places with green pieces (after figuring that out the puzzles become easy), and the map is a bit hard to read. Other than that, this is possibly the best iDevice game I've played.

    Oh not those puzzles, please!

The game is gorgeous. I have a fondness for some of the FF stuff. I am prepared to enjoy the hell out of this, but I _despise_ this kind of (slider) puzzle. I have a way-overdeveloped left brain and almost no right brain, and puzzle interludes like this can spoil the whole game for me, honest.

I almost never use cheats in games, but if someone, somewhere, would post solutions to these puzzles, I will be very grateful. They really spoil an RPG game for me and seem entirely irrelevant in the context of the story.
    :(
