As I mentioned earlier, I very much agree with you on this one. However, this could potentially be a game that gets some PSP and DS gamers to seriously consider picking up an iPhone or an iPod Touch as an additional gaming platform.
i've just tried this out with my iphone 3g, it's a bit choppy but runs pretty darn good for a game with this kind of graphics. it's like when playing need for speed shift on 3g vs. 3gs.
Finally someone with a 3G impression!! So how is the framerate compared to typical gameloft games like Dungeon Hunter, Gangstar, Skater Nation or Terminator Salvation? How is it compared to Sway / Minigore? to Wild West Pinball?
After the 3rd puzzle I'm getting my butt handed to me even with upgraded equipment. Stopping to potty and charge, it's gonna be a long night.
Also playing on a 3G. it's completely playable. I'd say it plays better than Dungeon Hunter. Less clutter on screen (I think the Dev's kept this in mind) and the load times are very quick. I don't have any of the other games you mentioned, sorry.
Exactly. I'm a handheld gaming fan from waaaay back (since the original GB and Atari Lynx!). I have both PSP and DS. My Touch joined them a few months ago, and is happily part of the family. In fact, my Touch has become my favorite game handheld. It's just so tiny and easy to take along, and the games are really good and very affordable. It's hard not to love it. The only negatives are lack of dpad and poor battery life. But overall, it's great.
I'm sure it's playable (even Ferrari GT is playable) and I'm not worried about clutter on screen since I've seen the gameplay screenshots and video. It's the framerate I'm worried about and seems like it's indeed a bit choppy?
Can't wait for Gameloft to make their own Chaos Rings "homage", just to start the push. We could be in store for some really full fledged games this year.
I compared it to Dungeon Hunter. Yes it chops, albeit very little. All the menus and other animation was surprisingly very smooth. I can't tell you for more than about the first 45min. in though. I hate bad frame rate more than anything and this isn't bothering me at all.
Some of the other comments on this thread seem to allude to the fact that this is a PSP killer game. Either way, I'm not really convinced at this point that the iPod Touch is picked up in large numbers for gaming. With that said, if Chaos Rings is sucessful and we start to see more high quality games getting released, at higher price points that make developers more willing to drop development dollars on iPhone games, then maybe this will change. It's a great start, but we'll see if this is a one time deal or if we actually start to see more games of this calibur.
Oh man, I pick up so many RPGs in the appstore yet I don't have time to play them. I've probably only went through half of zenonia 1 & 2, etc. I'm still probably going to buy this game; it sounds like the best RPG in the appstore right now.
Bought Chaos Rings, reviews are spawning up all over the place now (AppSpy, SlidetoPlay) and all of them are praising it. I've only played 10min of it so far but I'm already enjoying it, much better start than the awful FFXIII and has that traditional gameplay I always loved but went missing Graphics are awesome, nice to look at & it doesn't feel like I'm playing an iTouch at all. Great customisation too, it supports both english & japanese text (handy if you're asian and prefer japanese), you can choose which position to lock your screen in or leave the lock off so you can switch which way the screen is facing. For the in-game movement, you aren't restricted to a analogue stick locked into one corner, you can do the movement from wherever you like & it disappears when not in use. For the battles there's the option to do a solo or pair mode, pair mode allows for greater damage but you can only attack one enemy & you risk both of your characters getting hit. If you decide to do battles against a much higher ranked enemy you'll have more chance to gain new abilities (cure, analyze, etc). There's also merchants too, no more buying through stuff from a menu alone. Every menu option itself is easy to use & understand & intelligently the 3 main frequently used buttons 'map, save & camp' are shown straight away if you tap the right hand corner whilst in-game It really is quite remarkable that by the time Square Enix ticks all the right boxes its for a device you wouldn't expect. The price may be high for an iTouch but its one of the few times where its worth it
I usually ignore those "overenthusiastic" posts . My point, though, is not that PSP/DS owners in general will now see the iDevice as a viable gaming platform. I was just pointing out that are plenty of Square Enix fans who are seething at fact that this new game is only available for the iPhone/iPod Touch (I'm not kidding -- go check out the comment section of GameSpot or IGN when there's a story about Chaos Rings.) Some of those folks may decide to pick up an iPhone or iPod Touch (or an iPad, for that matter) precisely to play the latest SE game.
Without a doubt people are mad about the iPhone getting an exclusive (I remember how mad people were that the iPhone was getting Street Fighter 4 vs other platforms). I guess it is a good sign that this game is getting a mention on non-iDevice specific sites. I've even seen some tweets from gaming journalists (like Jim Sterling from Destructoid) who seem to be praising this game, which is pretty cool. I hope this game sells well.
Just played few minutes and love it very much. It run in my iPhone 3G without any problem. I love the auto-save. OK. iPhone 3G RPG users, you will enjoy this one. Battery? I am out of home and office for whole day, so my battery is low so I can only play for few minutes and charging it now by my MBP. Will try it on my iTouch 1g when I back to home. P.S. I want to play with the 5th set characters. I don't want him to die.
This game is getting glowing reviews. At least that one doesn't seem to have any insane comparisons like how STP put this on the Chrono Trigger level. I'm just wondering how much of this is the fact that the game is that good or just that all the iDevice sites are pumped up about the fact that this is the first original "premium/console quality" title for this platform. Squarezero, since your playing, can you describe how combat works? The Touchgen review refers to this as an action rpg, yet I was under the impression this game has a traditional turn based/random battle combat system similar to older style FF games.
It's turn-based, similar to FF but with a few other bits thrown in (the fact that you can combine attacks/magic reminds me a bit of Chrono Trigger). There's no limit break, and the moves are not timed (that I can tell) but there's an interesting system that give you an elemental aspect during combat based on what spells or items you use. Using fire magic will give you a fire aspect, which will leave you vulnerable to water attacks, and so on. (I'm paraphrasing here). As has been mentioned elsewhere, you recover all your HPs at the end of combat, but not your MPs, so you have to judicious in your use of Gene-based magic. The system is well balanced, carefully thought out, and really fun -- not to mention visually impressive. Not sure why Touch Gen called it an "action RPG."
