I watched a few game play videos but they only showed combat. Is there something like a home/base screen where you can review your units, purchase new ones, upgrade, etc?
You can choose equipment on one screen, but haven’t noticed anything regarding units. And I think that you can’t upgrade them
guys, this game is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! if you love deep strategy, this one is your deal... ok, in terms of replayability i think this is virtually infinite, 'cause both Law and Chaos game modes change everything on the table... Law mode is like other hex grid turn-based strategy game out there (but better in many aspects), so melee or magic combats with the addition of characters cards to summon and terrain advantages/disadvantages, plus a lot of things to consider, and also very very tough just against a medium AI (in case of offline battles). Chaos Mode is basically the same game, but rules change a lot: summon chreatures, melee and magic attacks depend on the balance of the universe, i.e. if Law dominates (because lot of Law summoned creatures or by Law magics casted), everything turns easier for that side in terms of positive summoning percentage, although they could also fail 'cause the randomness of the universe... oh, and i forgot to say that instead of real characters, wizards can also cast illusions of them at zero mana cost, they have the same features of the original ones but can easily dispelled by the enemy wizard with a Disbelieve spell which is always available (try to imagine a chain of Disbelieves if you believe that all that enemies casted creatures are too powerful to be real in such a short time!)... so, as you can see, all that adds an enormous depth and makes the game much more complex than in the normal mode. then in the campaign you can find shops to buy a lot of rare weapons, armors, shields, amulets, etc, or you can loot them across the journey... the beauty lies in the fact that everything you buy or find out there in the campaign mode, can be equipped (or not, depends on how you set it) then in offline battles... offline battles are basically the skirmish mode present in every other strategy game, and can be played against 3 difficulty levels of AI against another wizard, or in cooperative up to 4 wizards in each team (or more than two teams) in about 50 different maps!!! multiplayer? YESSSSS!!! same system as in offline mode, and you can choose between real time or async modes (although i still don't know if can be used looted weapons, amulets, etc). oh, grafx and music are really beautiful, and the learning curve is perfect thanks to an exhaustive tutorial with a lot of levels to try plus a Lore section with a complete game guide. so, all this beauty is not enough? why people keep snubbing great works like this one and still prefer to play idle clickers, hack'n'slashes and all that brainless crap? has the IQ been lowered so much in this years of mobile gaming?
Thanks Gwarmaxx, I was on the fence about this one as it's been getting mixed reactions. I will probably take the plunge.
I agree - the game is awesome, with lots of depth and enough variation in mechanics to make gameplay non repetitive. The cast illusion / disbelieve is great, it costs a turn to test, so you can’t just use it all the time, but how nice to disbelieve some giant, just before it wrecks you! Some of the defensive additional spells like vines, tress or blob are great fun too. All in all a very, very good game
casting an illusion costs a turn like a real one, but Disbelieve don’t, so if its cast is succesfull, you can have a chain of them if all foes casted are only illusions and you ban one by one (yeah, an extremely unlikely situation). anyway, this game was made by Julian Gollop, maybe one of the best indie devs of all times... we need to thank him for enormous classics like the original Chaos, Laser Squad and Rebelstar saga on the old good ZX Spectrum, but especially for that MASTERPIECE called UFO-Enemy Unknown (aka X-COM, the original one, not the remake), for me still one of the biggest games in videogame history.
I must agree with all that Gwarmaxx said. This game is pure gold. Just simple enough for a lot of people to get into but enough complexity to keep you coming back and elaborate new strategies. I prefer the chaos mode, the random factor of it brings a little thrill. When the opponent can’t cast a creature it makes me laugh. HAHAHAHAHA YOU PATHETIC WIZARD, CAN’T CAST A SIMPLE LION SPELL, MWAHAHAHAHA When it happens to me I cry, swear and curse the rng god. But still it never seems unfair. Oh! And comparison to chess is kinda accurate. Imagine chess pieces that have special powers. Sometimes when I use the highest map overview it actually feels a bit like it. Having Rome Total War and this little gem on my device gurantee hundreds of hours of quality time. Anyone on the fence for this game should take the plunge. It is soooooooooooo great! Only downside for now is that I never saw more than 5 people online. Wich is a real shame
wow, this game is really incredible! i've played for hours and still feel like just saw the beginning... the tutorial is like a complete game mode, and could be easily called "challenges", 'cause each level has a final task to reach, and some of them are pretty hard, mostly A and B ones. campaign mode seems to be a long journey in which i'm sadly stuck at the first citadel because of the wizard toughness, still can't find a good strategy to beat him (if you are beaten, you can choose to restart the journey from zero or reborn in the last safe point loosing some overall adventure points). offline mode is like a multiplayer arena but just against a really good AI, and is fully customizable (maps, teams, with or without loot, etc). i just miss trying the multiplayer mode, but i'm still looking for some good strategies before dive into it. @Ijipop yeah, you're right, Chaos mode is the cherry on the pie... change strategies completely... wow, this game is too much! @PBSNellie tutorial is a like a complete game mode, and even tough, right?
Seeing some really positive reasons to buy this, but what’s everyone’s thoughts on buying this without intention to play online at all. Online PvP is not my thing. And in light of that, I’m hesitant because I’ve read that there’s a bluff mechanic in this game, which makes it fun. Something about pretending to cast a monster and your opponent can guess if you really did cast it and vise Versa. But the general nuance with bluff mechanics in single player games is that it can feel dull or that the AI is cheating because...well the AI knows what you’re doing! Any thoughts on the longevity and reality of playing versus the AI only?
@Talbs good point! i’ve just finished an offline battle against medium AI, and i can tell you that never feel it was cheating, in fact i summoned three illusions, among which also my unicorn mount, and they fought almost to the end... the entire battle was spectacular, and after obliterating all its minions, i've cornered its wizard that eventually started to cast desbelieves 'cause it had no more creatures to summon (like me too)... so, seems that sometimes the AI casts desbieleves only if forced, and in other cases it does randomly, ie the same as we humans would do in the same situation, right? i think that this disbelieve thing adds a lot of depth to the strategy, and works really fine also against an AI... guess we must not exaggerate with false casts (you shouldn't cast an illusion of a dragon in the first turn!), otherwise it will find out.
Agree with all the positive comments here. A real gem. Just complicated enough, but accessible. Looks and sounds great. Maybe GOTY contender for me....too soon?
Can someone tell me why, when I try to end my turn, it tells me that not all of my creatures have finished moving, but I think that I have used up my moves?
there's a couple of things that i can't understand plus some annoying bugs: 1) how the armor, staff and amulet equip system works? seems to me that it's a little messed up, 'cause in any mode my wizard is completely different: i.e. i've just played an offline match and my wizard was a random one, with another name, staff, etc, is it normal? so my doubt is, which is my main customizable wizard, the online one only??? 2) why the hell i can't change my created wizards (campaign and online) anymore? i would like to have the initial wizard creation back, so i could try a new combination between staff and bodygear... imo devs have made a huge conceptual mistake in this case. anyone has a tip about this 2 points? regarding bugs i got a lot of black screens (had to kill the app every time) when i've tried to view staffs, bodygears, etc. also some buttons like those to choose gender, arrows to go back and others, stop working at some point. a couple of times during a battle, i got missing cards from the bottom list after checking them.
