I get the desire to collect games, but, for many developers and publishers, Apple Arcade is the only realistic way to release ad-free, IAP-free games on iOS. And for something like a new Castlevania, it would be totally unrealistic to expect Konami to release the game any other way (including as free to play). Ultimately, your beef is not with Apple, but with the bulk of consumers who have decided that premium prices are not reasonable for games on their phones. I guess you can blame Apple (and Google) for making it easy for publishers to incorporate IAPs into their games — except, of course, that free to play exists in every other platform. The difference is that on consoles and PC there is a culture of gamers who are glad to pay premium for their entertainment (and who view mobile gaming as beneath them, even when we’re talking about the same games available on console). Sure, premium games still get released on iOS (I should know — I own thousands of dollars worth of them), and some of them even make money. But it’s a huge gamble right now, especially for original titles that have not established a fan base on a “legitimate” platform. Now, I see potential for a super-premium tier of Apple Arcade games available for purchase — similar to what happens to an AA title when it makes it way to consoles or Steam (like Necrobarista for Switch, which sells for $21.99, or about 4 months of AA). Such a system would still make AA a great deal while giving folks like you (and me) a way to buy and keep the game we love. But, to be honest, I don’t think it’s realistic to expect something like that any time soon. In the meantime — yeah Castlevania! This is the same game that’s been in soft launch for a while now and if you’re expecting anything like SotN or Bloodstained, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Microtransactions? No. Apple Arcade’s current new motif to have the games offered as service to keep you subscribed? Yes. I will say though, @TheRealist82, prior to Apple offering + versions of games in Arcade, it made sense why they weren’t selling Arcade games. Now that these + versions exist, it should be a two way street. They still get a cut, two identical versions can exist like they do now, and if games are pulled, they’re pulled in both cases. It’s plausible and doable. Do it Apple. squarezero likes this. The price per month is reasonable and there’s some really good premiums on the service. I’ve lost count how many times a Premium game comes out on the AppStore and I read a reply on the TouchArcade forums that says “I’ll wait for a sale” when the game’s already a bargain or “They’re charging a ridiculous price! I can buy this on [insert other service here] for much less!!” “phone games” Happy to see Castlevania on Apple Arcade. Kind of wish Contra would’ve followed suit since that would have been an amazing release combo for Apple Arcade. The good thing about Apple Arcade is being able to download games I wouldn’t normally buy for a modest monthly outlay. Not much good at the jumping and slashing style so I’m pleased to see a semi-auto mode. I may be able to get into this. The dramatic intro is great, as is all the artwork so far. Konami did a soft launch last year and failed to gain traction because of the aggressive IAPs. It looks like they stripped the revenue system and did some rebalancing, but generally kept the gacha idea intact. Not that I’m complaining. Asp likes this. I’ve been an iOS gamer for quite over 10 years now and can’t count the titles I bought and "own" that haven‘t received any more updates and don‘t work on newer devices/operating systems anymore. Or disappeared from the App Store completely. (Most were lost with the new requirement from 32 to 64bit though). I‘d even wager that with Apple Arcade the chances are higher that their games will have to have a longer shelf life than if the developer/publisher released it by themselves. It‘s a pipe dream to think that you ever own a digital mobile game, no matter how much you paid for it. Just look at Titan Quest … Not to talk about digitally bought console games where the shop closes down … Good luck with that. Luckily the App Store ever disappearing is rather improbable. If AA is successful chances will be much higher that you can play all their titles for years to come, no matter how much a new iOS update would break the games otherwise … TLDR: You only ever really own a game if you‘ve got the physical copy. Something rather impossible with mobile games and the App Store. But at least Apple having the final say concerning AA titles chances are that they‘ll last longer as if they‘d been published solo. The game feels like a lot of those free 2 play games that I've long stopped playing. If it wasn't for the Castlevania theme, I'd quit already. I'm up to level 3-2 and added most of the modified difficulty and its still too easy at the moment. Kinda wondering if I'll hit the "paywall" somewhere. For now, I'll keep going just to see where this story is going. To me, the levels plays more like the old school, linear levels, but bite sized and easier. I tried that for a bit and gave up in the end. Maybe there's a later character we can unlock that can reach it? Or need to find the right character with the right skill to use? Edit: And deleted. Beat the first boss, then second level's enemies taking much longer to beat for my build. I tried doing those "summons" or whatever..but now just makes it feel like any other free 2 play stuff. I'll cut my loss and kinda enjoyed what I tried. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
