So the game is called Soul of Darkness and it's coming out for the DSi, this game reminds me so much of SOTN and it doesn't look that bad, I would hope Gameloft would port this to the iPhone but I can't remember the last 2D game they made. Anyone else thinks this doesn't look half-bad as well?
That's bordering on shameless, but I'd buy it. I need as much CV as I can get, and clones should hold at least a small amount of charm.
It's a port of one of their cellphone games and it's already out on DSiWare. It looks pretty cool, but I'm not sure if they would consider it "on strategy" for the iPhone. It's only 500 DSi points so I may pick it up. My guess is that if it comes to the iPhone, it will be turned into a full 3D game like Zombie Infection or Gangstar.
Oh thanks I misread there, normally I'm up for Gameloft making their games 3D but I want the real retro feel of the old Castlevania games from this. Do you mind leaving some impressions if you do pick it up btw?
Looks fantastically generic. The nailed the art-style, but maybe that's what bugs me. I like to have some connection to the characters. Not emotional or anything, but I like it when they have some personality. Kinda like that feeling when you start up a Mario game, and you feel that you're playing a Mario game. When I play one of Gameloft's title, it's like the game doesn't have an identity.
How do you expect to develop an emotional connection with the characters in a trailer? All I could gather (and all I would expect to gather) is a sense of the gameplay, the variety of environments, etc. You may be right that there's no emotional depth to the game, but to make that assessment based only on the trailer seems premature. @iVaro: I agree that a retro Castlevania-like for the iPhone would be awesome, I just don't see it coming from Gameloft.
I'm making a general statement derived from my observation whilst playing 4 other Gameloft titles in previous experiences.
Just reread your comment and I definitely misunderstood it -- sorry. Anyway, I'll check this out and see how it goes.
I think he's saying that the game just lacks personality. Games like Mario, Phoenix Wright, Grand Theft Auto, and such all have their own "personality". There's something about those games that differs them from the others, and you know it as soon as you start playing. Gameloft's games, on the other hand, all feel... generic. Sure, it may be a good game, but it lacks the personality that made the original games so fun. And I'd completely agree with him on that argument. And I really don't think that a Castlevania clone should be made by Gameloft... Actually, I really just don't even want a clone of those games. There's something about them that you just can't capture in a clone of those games, mostly the personality that Kamazar was talking about. I finally got around to getting Symphony of the Night, and there's just that personality that you know no one could capture in a clone. From the voice acting (which we all know Gameloft would ruin), to the graphics, to the settings, the game just feels original in every way. It may just be me, but after playing SotN, I realized that there's no way of making a clone of Castlevania successfully. Just take a look at some of the games mentioned before. No one's been able to make a game that has that same personality as any of those games, and I don't think anyone other than the original developers will ever be able to. There have been countless Mario and GTA clones, but each felt like they were trying to be something that they couldn't. Even the user-created Phoenix Wright cases I've played online, as fun as they may be, just don't feel the same as playing a case from the original game. So yeah, this game might be fun gameplay wise, but as far as cloning a Castlevania game goes, it just won't work.
Yeah, I wasn't arguing that the game wasn't fun at all. Just saying that it'll most likely fail to emulate much of what Castlevania so great.
Exactly. And some puzzle game based on Castlevania, as fun as it may turn out to be, will not cut it.
Hey iVaro, you asked me to report once I got this for the DS. Well, this isn't the place for a full review, but after 2 1/2 levels I can say that it's surprisingly good. As expected the story is fairly bland (your amnesiac fiance is kidnapped by vampires; she may have been one of them) but the gameplay is varied and fairly deep. Then again, I haven't played Symphony of Night, so it's possible that the best bits are all stolen.
You've never played Symphony of the Night?!?! GET IT NOW! If you have a PSP, spend that $10 on the PSOne classic. Otherwise, get it on XBLA. It's worth your money, trust me. Seeing as you liked this, you'll definitely like SotN.
Now I actually regret selling my DSi I'm sure Gameloft are already considering this for the iPhone though I didn't expect much from the story either,it's the gameplay that intrigues me, if you played any of the other Castlevania games before is it similar?
