You can replay missions to gain currency as mentioned already. There aren't any crazy difficulty spikes. I'd honestly say it is not needed. The only real reason to replay missions is because you enjoy the game or you really want a specific trap or minion. Some of the bonuses for missions come from only using one trap and I'd think that almost every level can be beat with only one or two, making getting specific ones something to do only to add to the variety of options for you.
