Meh, had the same reaction. Was pretty excited for this, but I'm definitely not using my Facebook account, and I don't see why that would be so important. I'm not going to spam my Facebook friends. Maybe it's time to make a Facebook account just for gaming. I´m afraid for the developers that this will put off a lot of costumers... Too bad.
By optional do you mean 'don't have to sign in but will miss a huge chunk of the game' or 'all of the game can be played without it'?
You will miss the ability to compete with your FB friends in leaderboards. Possibly also multiplayer features. But thats still TBA. Here is a new screenshot
Please make this as much like animal crossing as possible. Animal crossing is like me of the best adorable at game ever.

when it says develop and decorate your whole island you should show a zoomed out view of what you've made, that would be really cool - especially since its all in 3d!
