That's because you're playing a quick game, you need to setup an online game and that is asynchronous.
There is a timer when you search for a random opponent. When you are playing with friends there is not timer.

Has there been any word on when the first expansions (Inns & Cathedrals and The River II) will be available? I'm sure the answer's no, but one can hope, right? This is a great app and the quality no doubt means it will be worth the wait... but it sure does take them a long time. I'm a bit tired of playing just the base game. And once the first set is out, I'm going to be anxious for the next....

It was at a lower price when first released but since then has never gone on sale. However I would happily pay full price it is easily one of my most played games on the iOS platform. I have played 297 games so far - I dread to think how many hours
Carcassonne is worth the asking price for sure, and it appears they are going to stick to their guns on pricing (good board game apps can get away with that more easily since they are still a bargain compared to the physical versions). However, I am *so* ready for the expansions. I really wish they were releasing all of them right away. Even after we get the first set, I'll be anxiously awaiting the next and I suppose it's going to be a *long* time before the next set shows up. I also hope they will allow for mixing sets. For example, using the bridges from Bridges, Castles and Bazaars (whenever they get around to that expansion), even when you aren't actually using the expansion. I suppose that's unlikely, though.
Yup been waiting on a discount too. Still got a backlog of games so I'm in no rush to purchase right away. But wow, seems like forever for this game to have any kind of temporary sale.
Maybe when the new content is released for the game, they might reduce but I would not wait on it, I have never known them to have a sale. In my own opinion it is worth the asking price. I have paid much more for console games that have turned out to be rubbish.
The game is certainly worth the asking price... but if I were a betting man... which I'm not... I'd wager that when the first expansion is released as DLC, then they will drop the price of the base game. I think it's pretty likely they'll drop the price to get the game in the spotlight and thus get people who already have it to buy the expansion, and to get new people to buy the game and the expansion, not seeing it as $10 plus more to get the complete game.
