Thanks, but the story doesn't tell you that I spent at least 20-30 minutes per turn, looking for words and trying words I thought maybe could be English! Forfeiting worked, tried it on another game. But I'll give our game another go! Pity the game doesn't support more languages yet. P
Sorry if this has already been asked/answered. Any chance of a Night or Dark mode being implemented? I bought the customization when the game launched and thought it might include different background themes. I'd love to see a darker option added.
Well, here's one for the developer: Are you planning to add different languages? And if so, how difficult it is actually? I assume there's some sort of dictionary with list of allowed words. Or is it necessary to tweak the randomness of newly appeared letters as well? I'm asking just out of curiosity and if there's a way to contribute or help, I'd be more than willing to offer my services. But I guess it's not a matter of being short of people, right?
We have tossed around the idea for this a few times, but it's pretty far down the "to-do" list at the moment.
We are interested in adding additional language support. We have to get everything adjusted and working well in the english version before we can shift our efforts to that though.
They did say earlier as well that they have to look at letter frequency, banned words (e.g. swear words) and how to handle special characters (e.g. can you substitute O for Ö) when implementing other languages.
Yea, it definitely wouldn't be as easy as throwing in a different dictionary for each language. We would have to partner with some specialists to get it done right.
Good idea, they are already listed online however: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrabble_letter_distributions
Very interesting link, thks! The letter distribution obviously varies a lot depending on the language. So it's much more complex than just a new dictionary. Some relatively common letters in English could be very rarely used in another language and vice versa. I speak french, English, some german and a bit of Spanish, and I can assure you that Also accepting conjugated verbs and accorded adjectives alters the distribution a lot. For example Z is very rare letter in French but used in a lot of verbs for the plural "you", making it pretty easier to play than you would first think. Accents usually are dealt in word games by being totally forgotten I guess, i.e. "è,é,ê,ë" would be dealt as just "e". English is clearly a very easy language to deal with for word games, with a lot of short words, and easy grammar. And of course being spoken throughout the world makes it a no brainer. For other languages, looking at Scrabble letter distribution and accepted words dictionaries seems a pretty obvious choice, but that may require paid licenses? Maybe it's sthg easy to buy, but the quality of what you buy could be hard to assess I guess. And I don't even want to think of other alphabets or Chinese or Japanese lol. And finally, would all this work/money spent for adding new languages be worthwhile? Not so sure, you would have to cross reference spoken language population with iOS device equipment, and maybe the wealth of the countries. While adding new players, it could also dilute the player base I guess. Spanish looks like the first obvious choice though. I personally like the challenge of playing in English, despite the frustration of finding huge French words for nothing lol. And the strategy can make it up for the lack of vocabulary.
Agreed. I spent quite a while looking at it. I hadn't thought about verb endings before, but it makes sense. I though it was interesting that the German version of Scrabble does treat accents separately, but I guess they have a lot less accents than French.
Also the average length of English words is way shorter than French and even more German. This is not a game when you really need long words. You need many short words to extract yourself from desperate situations or just take 3 or 4 strategic tiles. Long words are a bonus not a prerequisite. Basically in German you would just paste words together to create a new word (compound): house of cards would be cardshouse for example. This led to extraordinary long words when you compounded already compounded words. So they had an orthography reform in the nineties in part to manage that. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_orthography_reform_of_1996 The longest compounded German word was 79 (!) letters long lol http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizit%C3%A4tenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft
The new words with friends Seriously, gave this a try this morning based on this thread and it's awesome, it's as good as words with friends but a bit trickier. Try it out if you havn't already.
Yes! We want to do a single player AI. One of the creators of Disco Zoo, Owen Goss is actually working on an AI as a side hobby, maybe he will let us use his when it's done!
Yea, I dug into it and read on your support site that lives are tied to your iCloud account. We share an iCloud account so we can have our Photos backed up the one iCloud account we pay for, so I suppose we'll just have to accept this as a drawback of sharing an iCloud account for now. Thanks again for a really fun game!
We decided today that we're going to change the server code to treat leaving a game after round 2 as a loss for the person who left and a win for the other. Not sure when it will roll out but should be this week hopefully.
Great news and thanks for the swift heads up! So with the IAP price drop this has finally earned my conversion, haha. Keep it up guys!
