If Stoic do lose, which would make me pretty unhappy, I would hope that karma will come back to King with Square Enix crushing them into a fine dust for infringing on their Romancing Saga and Saga Frontier games which has long existed decades ago.
Hope the indie community rallies behind them and provides support. The Banner SAGA is a fantastic game, the name is perfect and just fits
This nice article sheds some light on the whole issue: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/01/22/the-candy-crush-banner-saga-saga-stoic-speak-up/ It's not only that King.com are a bunch of liars and Trademark Trolls (yeah, we have a very edgy "TimLangdell" here...), moreover: it's an epic fail of governments, which allow single mundane words to be registered and trademarked. Words that don't even are specific names. It's just stupid. Without such trademark laws, we wouldn't have these issues. I don't talk about conpanies like Apple who trademarked "Apple", but just for their technology stuff and don't goes sueing apple farmers. I talk about stuff like "candy", "pink", "saga", which are used for single products. And then they go and put their game's names together after a modular concept, with their registered Lego-brick-like words. Talk about "candy crushed bubble witches". Generic and stupid. Luckily, there are only a few of these trolls out there. Can you imaging Kairosoft trying to trademark "pocket", "story" and "village"? Throw some more companies in and you'll have a desaster here.
Yeah its crazy trademarking that name, but on the other hand i cant believe people who play these sorts of games. This game seems to purposely get you to a certain level, suck you in and then you have to buy IAP's as it gets so tricky. Depressing when games like this are so popular, even in the UK we see TV adverts for this game. The amount of money this game makes is obscene and unbelievable. Its like they have millions of addicted players just buying IAP after IAP.
Funny... this just popped up in the Appstore. A registered name with "candy" in? I smell trouble. CCS has many of the freemium elements I really hate: consumable IAPs, wait timers, Facebook integration but no Game Center. And yet, I have played past level 100 and find myself really enjoying CCS. You see, I really enjoy good match 3 type games. I have played dozens of them (almost all paid games) on my iPad and I think CCS is probably the best of them. Yes, it can be hard as nails at time, but a high difficulty level keeps things interesting for me and the variety of elements and the level design is really excellent. While popularity does not always equate to quality, I believe that is the case here. So while I have a strong distaste for King's trademarking tactics, I still find myself enjoying their most popular game. However, I will never purchase any IAP from them, while I have happily done so in plenty of other games. letouche New Member Mar 2, 2014 1 0 0 UK #49 letouche, Mar 3, 2014 Wow, I never knew this, thanks for the heads up. I think its due to the terrible way this game incorporates IAP. I have it installed and just open it to collect the daily prize. I play it on average once a month. Never feel hooked or the urge to play. The game just doesn't turn me on as I find it too boring. I never pay cash I'll play a few games then come back a month or so later except to drop in the pick up the daily prizes.
