Its been out since Oct and hasn't had one sale. When do you think? [To make it simple, one word: Never]
...not to mention being one very well-thought out game. Clear simple objective, great music. Universal. And, thankfully, a developer who doesn't give in to those who have unrealistic expectations about the value of a game. Hopefully this game will never drop in price. Just wish others followed suit.
Sales drive commerce - you buy things on sale in shops do you not? A friend of mine will not pay the £1.79 for this game but would pay £0.59 and while you can call him cheap (he buys other games at 4.99+) the fact is that at .59 semi-secret would get some cash from him, at 1.79 they will not. We know that sales can make for good publicity and this dev obviously does not want to try that water which is fine. But 'worth it' is entirely subjective and price affects that subjectivity - hence you and everyone else buying things in shops that are on sale. They too have an impact which is no less (and very probably far more given major food retailers have food creators by the balls) than the app store. You should realise that low prices bring trade in and low prices can also help game hype. I'd be surprised if TA had never said that a game was over-priced.
This game does not need any hype via price. Quality just works here. And if two of your friends are not buying it, someone else will and brings the dev more money with one purchase than your two friends together (if it would be cheaper). The dev already wrote a really well written blog post on this topic. He did the math, don't worry. And you don't have to decide, what's the best for him
Devs mentioned before that they tried to put previous game on sale but it didn't have the desired result. Actually, I think that this dev's resolve would help drive sales. Most games that come out now go on sale within weeks of release, sometimes same week. People actually hold off buying games on release and wait for an inevitable sale. Knowing that the game will not go on sale no matter what helps make that decision.
"Quality just works here" If only that were true And quality too is subjective. I'm not looking to argue but if fixing a price is bad then please do not buy anything on sale. After all, someone loses out.
It's not "fixing" a price. It's making something cheap enough for YOU to buy it. There is a difference
And making it cheaper means more "You" buy it. Volume sales etc. But yes it's down to the dev. Their work, their product, their decision.
So is it still playable with the 3gs framerate issues or is it worth holding off till it is fixed? Also no-one really answered my earlier question does it let you play iPod music?
Canabalt is well worth $2.99. I think people are just getting spoiled with the $0.99 price points or constant price drops from most developers. Honestly I think that I would be more inclined to purchase an app from a developer that has never seen a sale before. This means that the developers believe their game is worth the asking price. I'd never complain about paying full price for games like Eliss, Zen Bound, Osmos, Space Miner.... and the list goes on.
A certain percentage of people will pay 2.99. A larger percentage will pay 1.99, and an even larger percentage will pay .99. It's possible to get money from all 3 groups. I won't pay more than .99 for Canabalt.
The fact people are still bothering to have this pathetic argument just means they have no idea how to look after their money. You don't buy things you can't afford, if you can't afford to take a risk on $2.99 then f*** off and cry in a corner, no one else cares in the slightest.
I bought a CD that has every Infocom game on. It is worth the money I paid. Others will disagree. You will have bought something else which I could buy, I have the money to buy and I might even use it but I will not because I cannot see it's worth. That is what this is about. It is NOT about the 2.99 Is IS about the economics of the store and people seeing games with depth at 2.99 or less and they see Canabalt as a one trick pony. Shiny and appealing it may be but it's still just one jump after another. So please don't say people are cheap or should do whatever. They cannot see the worth in the game for that price. Note: If when Zen Bound is released it costs 9.99 I would buy that instantly. It would be worth that to me. If it would not be to you then stop telling people Canabalt is worth 2.99 because it is worth it to you, not them.
Playable, yes. Fun... not really. If you haven't gotten used to the older versions, you might enjoy it at the frame rate it's running now, but if you've played the older version or the flash game extensively, you'll notice it's not smooth. Plus when it gets going quite fast, it seems to get even choppier. I find it pretty close to unplayable after a while, and I used to be a pretty decent Canabalt player.
I'm one of those who haven't ponied up the $2.99 for this as I see tons of clones going further with the idea. I'm thinking of getting Gravity Runner over this precisely because it looks like it's more fun -- adding additional elements with the gravity switching, etc. And it's $.99. I'm fine with this being initially $2.99 as it blazed the trail for many games to come. It's probably still selling well due to the name recognition. But that doesn't mean there aren't other games at $.99 that are better. This might sell 10 copies at $.99 for every one copy at $2.99. However, the developer might feel it's still selling well enough to warrant the $2.99 price tag. I do spend more than $.99 regularly on games - most recently Osmos, but even spent the $12.99 for Chaos Rings. It's not all about the money, but I do have to reign in my purchases to what I can afford as a whole. It's just a judgement call of what one game provides vs. other games in the same category. And the price. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Yes, very true. And when people see a CD that has every Infocom game on and they think it's overpriced they say "oh well" and GO HOME. They do not stand about whining at the store staff about how if it was $2 cheaper they'd make more sales. It's the most pathetic and ridiculous thing I've ever heard. This is the price, take it or leave it, if you're leaving it then LEAVE. The amount you're whining makes it sound that in actuality, you're so incredibly interested in the game that it probably is worth $2.99, only now you're on that magnificent high horse you're not sure how to get off. If it truly isn't worth the price to you then why do you keep thinking about it? Let the game go, there are more out there.
MidianGTX - I own the game, I bought it. I am simply relating what a friend who will not buy it says. And I agree with his point of view. I am just trying to illustrate that the issue here is not just money, it is perception of value. After all, if I don't make a judgment of value I might as well try to buy everything? And let's be honest here, this is not a game of character development, wifi battles, powerups and baddies to be shot. Depth it does not have. He doesn't see the point, you do, I did, he does not.
Either way, since it's about the economics of the store, and we all know the store would die should every game fall to $0.99, Canabalt needs to stay at it's current price. It helps the economy.
What most people don't understand that if you want to beat the original classic games you have to add more features but ALSO make a simple desgin for the app. Gravit Runner managed to do that but really no other run app has able to do it.
I'll grow a pair of breasts before this comes down to 59p friend. It's worth the asking price in my opinion. Put it this way, you may well be happy to buy 3, 59p games of mediocre quality, but you are being tight picking up a superb game for 1.79? Does my little paragraph resonate?
