http://www.fanpop.com/spots/mcdonalds You could go post there about how the Chicken Selects are a ripoff compared to Chicken Nuggets!
Ho-ly crap. I hate people sometimes..lol. Wtf are Chicken Selects lol. I try to stay away from McDonald's normally.
I agree on the fact the complainers are always louder and not neccesarialy the majority, people won't always say something nice when something is good but will always complain when they think something is wrong. Your analysis also made a lot of sense, kinda in the same sense of the blog, but there's also something to be gained out of it. Canabalt has been out for some months now, I checked my local store and US one and it is no longer on the top 100 games (not sure if I'm checking at the right place). If that is in fact the case, a sale, even if it is only $1 or $2 (1.99 or .99 in best case scenario for the complainers) although it might give the devs only $150 or $200, I'd consider it advertisement costs as that $150-$100 loss of 1 day could be gained with the return of canabalt to the top 100, which would, on the other hand, rise the next $2.99 sales to 130 for... a week? recovering the money and making a profit. Even then, for that to be true is a matter of empirical evidence and no one can assure it could go one way or another, but a sale is not (a priori) a bad strategy. They could say that went wrong with their other game, but that's no evidence to avoid them from doing so with this one. Either way I consider this game good, if it gets a bit more updates and doesnt start with all the dlc crap I might get it whichever the price.
how can you compare their first game sales to this game sales, they are different games, appealing to different genres therefore the only connection between the two sales figures, are the developer
Canabalt plugged on CNN- http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/tech/2009/12/30/planet.of.the.apps.cnn They neglected to mention the premium price.
I understand why people are complaining about the $3 price tag. We've gotten used to a particular pricing structure: - Simple game = $1 - Top quality indie game (great graphics, story, gameplay, etc) = $3-$5 - AAA title = $7 (starts at $10, goes on sale shortly after) Canabalt falls into the "simple game" category. We expecting the devs to follow the pricing structure we've grown used to. For those too accustomed to this price structure, this game appears to be overpriced. Even if we assume that the above pricing model is worth defending (many of us would not), we have to understand that Canabalt is more than just a "simple game" and is therefore worth more than $1. This is a game that exploits its simplicity to heighten the enjoyment of the gameplay. It has one action (jump) and one objective (jump over things), yet this one objective is hard to reach (just look at the game's high scores). Despite its difficulty, it's easy to play, easy to play continuously, and easy to show others. Canabalt is "Game of the Year" material. This game is the iPhone's "Super Mario Bros." Seriously, you can pay $3 for this. If you think you're getting the whole of the Canabalt experience for free on the web, you're mistaken: - Playing on your PC is fine, but your PC won't be with you all the time. Canabalt is the easiest game to pick up and play for a quick challenge. - Tapping on the screen is so much better than pressing X or C on the keyboard. - The viewport is taller on the iPhone so you'll have a better idea of where you're headed. - This is THE game to show off to your friends. Your internet-connected PC isn't with you at all times. - The song is awesome. Imagine you're paying $1 for a terrific Goa track off iTunes, and $2 for the game. If you've got headphones/speakers to use while you play, it's a good song. You guys should consider all this when hoping for a sale. These kinds of games don't come along that often. And, like others have said, if you're still reading this thread you're probably interested in the game.
:O you composed the music, didn't you?! I don't have canabalt but I've played it on newgrounds before.
All the good publicity Canabalt is getting is probaby a major factor in how they are making such a profit at their pricepoint.
yea, i did the music thanks for all the support guys! i'm blown away by the popularity of this thing, and all the kind words. I'm considering releasing a soundtrack/ringtone bundle too! but anyway, don't wanna derail the thread.... the update is awesome, adam let me make another track, and the leaderboard scores are inSANE. and the new obstacles and billboards... love it!
The people in here telling Adam what to do as though they his interests in mind are - at this point - a sham. He's made it quite clear that he understands the pricing merits and perils of the App Store, and priced his game where he felt it belonged to make him a profit. He seems quite happy with how it's doing, and he's done his homework. You just want to get the game cheaper than what it costs. And that's fine - feel free to keep waiting for the sale that may or may not come - but don't come in here and call the developer an idiot for not matching the price point you want. We're well past the question of whether he knows what he's doing or not. He does.
Well done Dan for the music, as this is one of a few games where without it the game would not be half as good.
christmas present for myself damned worth the pocket change hell yeah this game messes with my vision!
Since when did the online leaderboards show 100 positions? I just realized i'm all time #79 EDIT: Doh, it was today's ranking
