lol. I bought Canabalt. It was fun for a few weeks, but, oddly enough, the farther I progressed, the more boring the gameplay became for me. It's very repetitive, and the price is very disproportionate with the other prices in the app store. For a dollar less, you could get a 3D game like Castle Fenzy. By the way, thanks for recommending Castle Fenzy, Touch Arcade. It's one of my top games.
I am very shocked that the dev didn't do a .99 Black Friday sale, he would've seen so many sales since a lot of people [like me] are on the fence about buying it. But its whatever
Oh yea forsure, I've played the flash version a lot, thats why I'm adamant in not not buying it unless it goes on a .99 sale. Honestly, it has nothing to do with me being cheap [well, a little bit] but I know this game is NOT worth $3, especially when sized up next to other games in that price range. I understand that he needs help to keep the flash version site up, as well as development costs, but seriously, $3 is much. He would have better sales figures if it was a $1 flat.
Agree completely, I'm no cheapskate and buy plenty of apps each week, there are quite a lot where I'm "on the fence" about and the sale this Black Friday weekend has tempted me to go for those titles I wasn't sure about as it's lesser risk. Canabalt has not yet seen ONE update, it was crying out for online leaderboards this game and it's been pretty much dead since release. While I like the game I am in agreement more and more with the pricing comments which I don't usually like to see in threads with all the cheapskates around but in this particular case I reckon he's losing out BIG time by not putting this on a 1$ sale - it's certainly not worth the current price having been out this long with no word of updates I'm afraid to say
Hi, I was surprised also. Would have bought it at that price but like others have mentioned, looks like it might get old quickly. David
Hell yea, I spent wayyy to much this month [though half of it was because of Eliminate, the hype got to me, blew money on the game, never again] But I bought a lot of apps this month, and this game would have been one of them. IF he had done a sale. Like you said, the fact that its been out since Oct. 19th, and hasn't even gotten online leaderboards, is, well, IMO..lazy on the dev's behalf. Tsk Tsk..
Yea for sure, idk if you've played it [more than likely you have] but there's an online Flash version, just Google it. Idk why this dev refuses to do a temp price drop..it just seems so greedy..thats a bit harsh but damn thats the first thing that comes to mind.
Well, online leaderboards are in development so maybe they will make a sale once the update comes out. "making great progress on Canabalt 1.1 - with any luck it will hit iDevices around Thanksgiving, with global leaderboards and new obstacles!"
Well at least its in the works, and I had that same thought about maybe a sale once the update comes out, pretty popular thing for devs to do. Who knows though..all I can say definitively is that I won't be getting this game till [or if] there's a sale
The developer's strategy of charging 3 dollars seemed to pan out really well. They probably made upwards of 60k or so in that big starting rush, even if it tapered off quickly. The developer also provides a lot of stuff for free to other game makers (the Flixel framework), so it's money spent on a good cause. That said, I didn't get Canabalt because it wasn't my favorite title from that developer. I liked Gravity Hook way more, or even Fathom. Plus Canabalt doesn't have customizable hats (IMPORTANT). The cost of Canabalt, however, didn't bother me. If I could afford a 99 cent game (and the iPod/iPhone to put it on), I'm going to go out on a limb and say I could probably afford a 3 dollar game. Not really a question of "affordability" there. I guess you could make a "principle" argument: Since some games are worth 99 cents on the app store, all games should be worth 99 cents. I don't buy the "all games should be 99 cents" argument, personally. I see charging 99 cents for your game as a lottery-ticket gamble. Maybe you'll luck out and get a big rush of people that don't mind paying a single dollar on a game that they've never heard of, has really simplistic gameplay, and never gets updated. Or maybe you won't get a big rush of people, and you'll simply cut your profits massively. The Canabalt guys most likely made a conscious decision to charge a lot for their game, to ride that initial surge of popularity for their virally spread but simple game.
Yea I get what you're saying. But seeing as its been out for quite awhile, it seems that it would make sense to do a .99 sale, since users who were put off by the initial cost will more than likely pick it up, which could bump up their drop in sales. Idk I think it'd make sense..lol.
Oh yeah, probably. Sales seem handy to try to spike your ranking in the App Store up. I was mostly responding to earlier in the thread, to those that were saying it should have been 99 cents to start with. Also, that fan site for Canabalt is amazing.
Oh yea I see. I kinda share that thought..not really though. I mean, if it started 1.99 that seems to fit the game more, 2.99 though? Nahh.. Never seen the fan site, might check it out one of these days.
Even a $2 sale and I would have got this. IDK...$3 just seems like too much for it. But it does look fun. Come on...Jet Car Stunts is only $2 and it's GREAT!
i bought this, mainly because i liked the pc version. firslty on ipod its 10x better in my opinion, the touch controls a way more responsive and easier than the space bar, also the camera view is much more zoomed out, giving a better view of whats to come and therefore lowering the frustration factor. i play this about 20 times every day (whenever i need to pass a minute ro two of my time) and while it is simple, it never gets boring, the randomised level helps this a lot. so while feature wise it may not seem worth $3, if im honest, by sheer amount of play time and enjoyment i have ZERO regrets, and can only recommend it to anyone who even remotely enjoyed the pc version of the game.. this and labyrinth (which i have only just got into for some reason) are the only two apps im playing right now (will be this and labyrinth 2 once i finally get round to buying the sequel) seems the game was made for iphone, quick, and always fun, and those types end up being my favourite apps. (if i wanted a 20 hour RPG i would play one on my pc or cconsole)
