I've got a base model 13" 2.26 GHz MBP, with RAM upgraded to 4gb. I'm running Windows 7 via VMFusion. I'm wondering if this setup would be conducive towards playing games from Steam... I'm obviously not targeting the newest or most resource intensive games, but I have my eye on a couple older games that I've never played and think would be fun... but I have no idea whether or not they will work. I'm thinking of Star Wars: KOTOR and Braid. Neither seem to be too resource intensive and on Steam it says Braid is compatible with Windows 7 although KOTOR says only XP/Vista. Anyways, does anyone have experience doing this that can offer some insight? Is it worth giving it a try? and are there any restrictions to trouble-shooting, being that Windows is running in a virtual environment? Thanks.
You should be able to but I'd recommend booting into windows rather than using virtualization software. My friends and I used to play L4D and Team Fortress on our MB's so I know it used to work but I can't confirm that it still works
My Windows XP laptop has half the specs of the low end MacBooks, and both Braid and KOTOR run perfectly well on it... so I'm assuming with more than double the specs you'd be good to go. Haven't tried it myself though.
Okay thanks guys. I'll give it a shot with Braid and see how it goes. VeganTNT- I think you have a good point about booting into Windows natively... I think I'm going to try that first before attempting to run anything on VMWare.
(Sorry for double post) That's a good point and I looked at that... It's 15 for OSX and 10 on Steam. In addition to playing the games I'm also interested in just seeing if it will work, as it will open a world of possibilities for me
CrossOver Games is what I use. It is far less resource intensive than VMWare Fusion so your games will run at full speed. It is second only to bootcamping Windows.
+1 on CrossOver Games, though I've been having trouble getting it to work on Snow Leopard (already followed the instructions in CodeWeaver's website). When it was working, I could run all of Half-Life II chapter at full speed without a hitch. I also recommend using LiftOff, which basically turns off your OS while you're running games so as to improve performance.
Thanks guys. I still haven't managed to find time to even try it out with bootcamp yet, but I have heard really good things about Crossover and will be taking a look at it.
Update: Braid works fine with bootcamp, I can not get it to work at all with VMware Fusion... but it also works great with Crossover Games Crossover Games is going to be my solution here, thanks for the suggestion! Will try KOTOR next and will update this post with my results. Update: KOTOR works great with Crossover Games as well! Going to purchase the full version now.. Last update: Okay this Crossover Games program is just absolutely fantastic. I just installed Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (one of my most favorite games ) from the original disc, using Crossover Games... and it just installs and works... I am thoroughly impressed. Didn't need bootcamp or VMware Fusion, didn't have to mess with Windows at all and I'm playing a Windows game in OSX. I know this isn't breaking news or anything for most people but it's new to me and I am very happy and pleasantly surprised
