The campaign is not geared towards story, instead gameplay. The story is bad (better than most iOS games), but it wont leave an impact on you. The missions can length from 10-20, or less, minutes (depending how you approach them) and there are 16 missions in total. Its not your typical cod experience. The story is reasonable but then again a little exagerated (but what will an action game story be without exageration). Level design; for the more tactical missions you'll usually have access to two routes that both lead to the same objective. But you can always approach it in your own way. There are snipers keeping guard that you'll need to silently take out, alarms that you'll need to disable, cameras that you'll need to avoid, sentry turrets you'll need to hack or avoid, and bodies that you'll have to hide after going in for a silent kill (or else an enemy will see it and trigger the alarm). You can approach these situations how ever you want. If your a run and gun guy, then its your typical run and gun shooter. Shoot enemies, take cover, switch to another squad member to avoid flanking, throw grenades, plant claymores, etc. The AI isn't too special. They take cover, shoot, ocasionally throw grenades; but you still have to stay aware of your surroundings. They can easily kill you if you're not using cover at all. Assualts usually stay ranged from you, shotguns usually come up as run to you, LMGs stay ranged from you as well, and snipers are usually on roof tops waiting for you to come in sight. Two sniper shots will kill you. And AI will take cover. As of now you cannot remove the snap aiming. I don't find myself using it at all because I've gotten so use to the iOS FPS controls from on the nova and mc I use to play back in the day. Its geared towards learners, if you have no trouble aiming I doubt you'll want to waste your time pushing the snap aim and accidentally targeting the wrong enemy. The only time i find myself using it is when im approaching a mission in a tactical manner and I see that I have to quickly take out two guards that are standing by each other quickly with my sniper. I do this to avoid missing a shot and having one of the guards pull the alarm.
Again I will agree with rip, this game is a huge quality game and the controls are good. Movement is basically floating, panning is floating, the fire moveable, and zoom aim you can just double tap for it instead of the icon. The controls work, and to the contrary are very customable due to the above. All this controls stuff is very unfair to the devs, they did alot to make the floating sticks, moveable fire, and doubletap to scope. It works fine, actually works well. And I agree with rip, anyone missing out on this or Asphalt 8, it's your loss. They are about as console close as you can get on ios, and they both are hella fun.
I went ahead and picked this up per Oscar's very informative post. First off, I'm impressed with the overall level of polish. It runs extremely well, and while it really doesn't look all that great, you get the trademark CoD fluidity. The menu UI is slick, and the first mission (all I've done as of yet) makes for a good tutorial and interesting setup for future missions. The gameplay I'm pleased with. As for the controls, the main reason I picked this up, it's a mixed bag. They're certainly not as good as they could be, yet not as poor as some posters, including myself, might've led others to believe. They're workable, but again, they're not customizable, and thus not optimal. I don't like the position of the reload button, and I really dislike the position of the ADS button. I don't like the double tapping bit to ADS, either. It just feels finicky in a way. Give me a set button any day. Ultimately, I can see myself playing through this and enjoying it, but not mastering it and having the precision that any Gameloft game allows. I still think that it would be a great addition to allow for control customization - there's simply no reason not to. Also, the lack of attachments and secondary weapon picks is a rather glaring omission.
^ I'm glad you handled that in a reasonable manner instead of getting super upset like so many other people do when someone disagrees. Nonetheless I'm glad you're at least somewhat enjoying it. It's my favorite shooter on the iOS now even after playing all the MC games and Nova games. But obviously that's just my opinion. I think moving the fire button is the most crucial customization option and at least that's in this game. I've grown to love the scope button because I can hit that quickly with one hand while still being close to the fire button with my right hand. I agree with lack of weapon customization, my only real big complaint. If just these weapons, I'd hope for holosights or scopes. That'd really spice things up. I can only wish that an update will include them.
^You can't really compare the two... If they update this at all, there simply must be co-op MP. Forget controls (no, actually don't), attachments, etc and focus on this! Free, IAP, XP/coin unlock, whatever it takes - this game is just perfectly suited to it. Also, why the hell do you continue to ADS after reloading. Drives me crazy running around, emptying my gun, running while reloading, then suddenly slowing to a crawl as I aim again. That (and the terrible ADS system) got me killed in survival mode (which, by the way, was a fantastic addition and another place that really cries out for some sort of co-op). I'm almost certain the console CoDs didn't have this annoyance.
While you reloading, (and I still completely agree) you can tap the ADS button and it won't enter back in after you finish.
Great hearing some valid, respected feedback. I'm curious if you guys ran into a pay wall or if that's bs too? I'm probably gonna hold off on this till I see how much space Shadowrun needs. You've convinced me to grab Asphalt 8 though...deleting RR2.
Yeah, I really like being able switch from tps mode to overhead, and I think the criticisms that it is not a Nova or Modern Combat are unfair. Sure, it is not a fluid mp fast paced FPS, but who are we kidding here? It was never designed to be that. It's meant to be a slower paced, strategic game, and the variety is what makes it fun for me. Run and gun games just after awhile get more monotonous to me, this game, because of the many different ways to play is refreshing. Has a cool story too. Expect an interesting campaign, nothing more. Don't be expecting a run and gun mp game, and you will be impressed. The graphics and polish are incredible in this game, making a very close to console exp even on my ipad 3, this game almost makes me reverse my urge to buy an ipad 5, since the ipad 3 version runs so well. They really should get a pat on the back for making it look so good on an ipad 3. The controls, I agree that it could use fully customizable controls (though the main controls basically are), but really the hate on them is way too much. They work, and it certainly is not terrible. It's good to see more and more people buying in and enjoying the game. While it plays totally different from Nova or MC, this game still is a good console like game and deserves more love in my opinion.
A "console like game" shouldn't be the criteria for a good iOS game. In some cases, it makes for a terrible one. The shotgun is utter cow dung. I made the mistake of going with that on survival...ugh. It might be more fun to use were I able to aim well with it, or had they included some aim assist, but I've done that to death. Just used the pistol and lasted until round 5. The great muzzle flares really put Gameloft's rather wimpy ones to shame.
I'm so glad almost everyone is enjoying it. I was really suprised when this hit the AppStore, and really, it saves the week for me. Just amazing overall CoD vibe, awesome new things added, really FUN stelth based gameplay (for the missions that can be played as such) that is awesome and intense. By the way, bodies don't disapper, so make sure to hide them before any guards notice them! My GOTW, and a chance at being GOTY for me.
All the paywall stuff really seems to just be questions, just like the misconceptions about the controls, I haven't seen anything, though I am only on mission 3, Just started. Maybe one of the more serious gamers could comment who have gotten far, but this whole thread is weird, maybe cause it was a stealth release, the thread is just all over the place. But if one reads carefully, there is alot to like about this game. It's good you are picking up Asphalt 8, it is awesome. The last 6 months have been tough for ios with the trend toward freemium games and away from console like premium apps. Both this game and A8 have given me hope that good console like games can be made for ios, and that is refreshing.
You don't seem to be reading anything. Of course just because it is a console like game does not make it great. I never said it was good cause it is console like. It is good cause it is good. Console like is a bonus.
Disappointing they had to continue the trend with this, then. Shotguns are really quite fun to use, especially when ragdolls are involved. I know there's an add me thread, but I'll just throw this out here for those who don't check it - add me on ActiVate jbruu11. Some idiot stole my usual name (probably myself earlier with a forgotten account ).
