I would say the controls are perfect as is right now. Gyroscope controls for a game that is largely centered on tilt are not a good option. You should read this blog post on the subject, http://www.paradeofrain.com/2010/10/gyroscope-all-the-way/
Thanks for that link. Interesting read, especially the part about playing the game inside a moving vehicle. I would've never have thought of that.
