I searched for and didn't find a thread for discussing board and card games, so here we go. If this is a dupe, point me to the real thread. Anyway, no, this is not for discussing Chutes and Ladders, nor poker. Rather, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders, Fluxx, Reiner Knizia's Samurai, etc, etc. We can talk about iOS apps, I suppose, but I intend this mainly for discussion of the real games, as the iOS games have their own threads. I'll start this thing off by asking a question for anyone who has played 7 Wonders. We just got this. I've only played it once so far, but it seems fun. However, one of the cards you can build gives you coins based on how many stages of your "Wonder" have been built. There are 3 stages to each wonder, yet the rules state that you get something like 1, 3, 5 or 7 coins. That's 4 stages. Those coin values are wrong, I'm sure of it, but it doesn't matter. The point is that there are 4 different numbers, not 3. We took that to mean that you get the lowest value for free, for the card, but it doesn't really say that in the rules. Similarly you get victory points at the end of the game, and again it lists 4 numbers (these are right): 1, 2, 3, 4. So is that correct, that you get the lowest value if you have no stages built, then the next if you have one built, etc? Or is this just a mistake in the rules?
For a game that hasn't been ported to iOS yet, your best bet on rules questions is going to be the BGG forums: http://boardgamegeek.com/forums/thing/68448/7-wonders
Ah, thanks, and I found the answer. The answer is that I missed that there is a board that has 4 stages. One of the B sides - Gizah B. Thus why there's 4 stages listed. http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/678154/resources-provided-by-building-layer-of-alexandria I also found the website for this game and they actually have a downloadable 8th Wonder Board. Side A & B. The B side has only 1 stage, but one of the rewards is well chilled beer from whoever wins the game. http://www.rprod.com/en/7W-rules.html
What are good board games to play alone? Before I sound like a creep or whatever, I just can't convince my friends to play boardgames, even when there is epic shit out there like Blood Bowl. (which thanks to the random chance of the dice is still pretty fun on your own). I do actually have friends, honest! But I mean there must be some good solo boardgames. ...right?
That's a good question. I only have one board game that is genuinely one player, but it's long out of print and, to tell the truth, I wasn't much of a fan of it, but that's probably because it wasn't really my type of game. It's an old Avalon Hill war game called Ambush. I will say that it was pretty darn clever how it worked. It was sort of like playing a video board game, but on an actual board and without the video/computer bits. The main problem with it is that it had a limited lifespan. Once you'd played each scenario, while you could play the scenarios again, they would be exactly the same each time. At least if I'm recalling correctly. I have it in my basement somewhere. And I sympathize with you. I've got a group of friends to play board games with now. The other thing you can do is look for groups that have regular meetings to play board games. They are all over the US, at least. I'll try to dredge up the info and post it. EDIT: ok, this one is just Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia (though all in the vicinity of Maryland), but it's a start: http://www.gamesclubofmd.org/
Yeah, despite being born during the rise of videogame technology I still love boardgames. I used to play loads with my Dad. Things like CD adventurers, Blood Bowl as mentioned, that modern one with superheroes that name escapes me, chess, cluedo etc. But it's a shame, since whenever I try to get friends to play, they don't want to know. So most of them are just gathering dust now. I searched for a long time for a solo game and about the only thing I could find was chainsaw warrior, but DAMN that game is so hard.
Also check local game stores. A lot of them have open gaming nights. The other thing you can do is have kids. My 8 and 10 year old play board and card games with me.
I don't even know of any local game stores! Haha. Kids seems a rather expensive option to find someone to play a boardgame with...
Short of that boardgamegeek.com has forums for organizing and finding game groups around the world: http://boardgamegeek.com/forum/82/boardgamegeek/game-groups
Here's a game I just learned about which is apparently a good game to play solo! It's a cooperative game for up to 4 players, but also including the possibility of solo play. Instead of playing versus each other, you are playing versus the game itself. Apparently it is a very difficult game to win, which is good since you're trying to beat the game. Also, though, apparently the provided rules are pretty terrible, but you can find tutorial videos on boardgamegeek. The game looks pretty fascinating and there's now an iPad version of the game too! http://www.coolstuffinc.com/main_boardGame.php?viewType=view%20board%20games&fp=Acc-ASMGhostStories#Ghost%20Stories%20Board%20Game Videos on boardgamegeek.com: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/37046/ghost-stories#videos
Or buy the boardgame! I actually just ordered it myself, along with Ascension + the expansion for that. My kids actually like Ghost Stories even though it is brutally difficult! I think they like it because you work together instead of against each other. Plus the theme is fun. The iPad game only allows 2 players, unlike the real game, which is part of why I ordered the real version, but also because I do enjoy playing the real games more. iPad version will still get some play, but once I've got the real thing that's mostly what I'll play. Plus there is an expansion that I'll probably end up getting at some point. Note that you can play the game solo either with only one Monk, or up to 4 Monks (i.e. play all 4 players yourself). The game works however you want to do it.
