This game does have some irritating bits. One in particular is changing to a different player after moving your ball carrier, I've just tried to pass the ball half way back down the pitch with a beastman when he was 1 square away from a touchdown and out of range of all opposition players! I'll admit I actually shouted obscenities at the ipad!
I'm still sucking as well but finally beat my first opponents, humans, with a whopping 1-0! What I think I'm finally starting to get some of the basics: 1) Know your rough odds when going into a block situation. Primarily ST vs. ST with each of his adjacent and your adjacent guys to that space giving a +1 to their respective side. 2) Since you can only actively blitz with one guy, be sure to at least put your other guys in such a way that either your opponents will have to pass by right next to them giving you a chance to tackle them or, if some receivers have already managed to snake past your defenses, try to cover them so that movement of their receiver is harder to pull off (even better if you can place somebody in line to potentially intercept). 3) While I haven't really practiced this myself, remember when pushing an opponent, if possible, push them toward another one of you nearby players and it might trigger another block interaction!
Ok so at first this may seem a bit extreme for new players , but as one of them persever. Now the 'easy' teams are actually 'easy' , which when I first started this seemed a distance dream. What seems random bad luck (and you will still get that) is actually a very sophisticated turn based game. Really , no crashes , great deep play, and a great price I can't recommend this enough for board game fans , oh and it plays great on the 'old' ipad 2
So I think I'm possibly getting the AI gripes even though it is still kicks my ass consistently. As you are learning the game and still have a low value team, your opponents seem miles above you with their higher value teams (this is where I still am). BUT, as you cleverly build your team up with several key skills I'm assuming some of the AI's tactical shortcomings may slowly come to light (again, this is just a theory as I'm nowhere near that proficiency myself yet).
This tutorial series has been extremely helpful for me: cKnoor's Beginner's Guide to Playing Blood Bowl. http://youtu.be/MV3kQuapaTw I think there are 7 videos in total.
Asynch is kinda difficult to implement, since there are times when the player who's not currently playing their turn has to make a choice.
Gotta love the TA review. Anyways the more i play this game, the more i learn, more i love it. At some point after i fig how to play orc and humans i will go ahead and buy all the other teams. The dwarves look sweet just for the spiked steamroller. Hilarious!
This looks appealing to me but I dislike American football (or regular football even) So I'm not sure if it's worth a buy for me, but I'm watching this thread with interest.
Yeah, I play my Chaos team as sort of an anti-football team, If they can win 1-0 and take out half the other team, that is a big win in my book.
I actually managed NINE kills with my Chaos team versus Skaven in a single match. I was glad it was versus the AI as I would have felt a bit bad permanently taking out that many players from a friends team . It actually had me thinking injuries and kills worked based on strength till I looked up the rules and saw that that many kills was just incredibly unlikely to happen in one game!
I hate sport. Remember, this was a boardgame for fat pasty nerds who liked wizards and dragons. It's a wargame with an (almost) optional side mission of moving a ball up the pitch.
Just wanted to quote this link for anyone who missed it. These strategy guides are excellent, and if you are picking a team this describes builds, strategies, strengths and weaknesses. Well worth a read.
Played my first matchmaking session. Man, the turns are so fast! With the occasional interference of lag, I often found myself scrambling to get at least half my guys doing something worthwhile before time ran out. In the end it was a tie-game, although the opponent lost 1 guy and had 2 others badly wounded so in the spirit of BB I guess I came out on top . For any interesting in online play, I did discover last night that playing non-match making game against friends or random challengers does reward experience and cash, so at least you can build your team up without having to commit to competitive play.

I won my first tournament... and suddenly my teamvalue is above the teams I'm playing against and no longer have that disposable player. You know, that guy you hired just for the game that you don't mind throwing into the crowd of angry dwarves huddling around the ball carrier because you won't be getting him next game anyway. Now I have to look up how to actually break up a cage without casualties.
After reading the rules I assume a player that has been pushed as a result of a block into another tackle zone is not then subject to another block check, right? I think I also finally get Trolls. They can strike hard when blitzing but can't LEAVE a tackle zone to save their lives. Which in turn means ANYBODY can harrass and block an opposing runner/reciever since the relative strengths of the players are irrelevant in a check made to leave a tackle zone (it is solely based on the active character's AG and number of opponents exerting a tackle zone in that space). UPDATE: Whoa, what a buffoon! I misunderstood a critical rule all this time. I somehow how thought the guy blitzing in a turn was the only player allowed to throw a block that turn (and here I wondered why I could never win a match vs. AI)!
Yeah, that might change a few things for you. I play str heavy teams that rely on bashing the other team. A lot of my strategy is to knock down as many opposing players per turn, so that they spend most of their next turn standing up. It is just a simple matter of how many 2 dice blocks can I get in a turn for a new team with not a lot of skills yet.
As the commentators I believe joked, "The orcs just recently realized that there even was a ball in the game".
ok here is my problem. i am having a problem getting my guys to pass. usually when i pick up the ball for the first time. the passer shows the throw the ball circles but i dont want to throw the ball right away. i want to make other moves first so i deselect him (which can be kind of difficult). i usually have to select some blank space away from the player to get this passing thing off. then letter when i want my guy to pass i cant seem to get the passing circles to come back. i have tried to select the passer and double tap my target but all that does is select the target. help me. My second problem is my starting lineup guys a couple of times i have had 12 guys on my roster and the comp sellects my starting lineup but when i see the other team set up i want to put the guy on the sidelines into the game. can this be done? thanks all
