So, a few days gone by and now its the time to ask: For the real RTS fans here, did you find much depth and variety in Block Fortress: War? Thats a key thing in an RTS for me, like controlling multiple resources and the enemy, an unlock technology tree, you know, stuff like that... Looked at every video I could find for this but I don't see it anywhere.
Yes this game is serious about the dept of it , it has 4 planet with 5 mission each and then times that with 3 ( 3 heroes for each campaign ), and u hav 60 missions in total . Each mission last about 20-30 min , with exception to higher mission which is more challenging and takes about 30-40 mins . This is kinda like Warcraft but in minecraft graphic . The only thing I was disappoint is that it does not have third person view feature for your hero just like Bug Heroes 2...
Stage five in Planet Z seems to be bugged. Right before the Zomblock hero says,"we will awaken soon..." A wave of black rushes across the terrain, leaving everything, except units, in darkness. Happens on both the Block Men and Goblock campaigns. And after reading the thread, I'm nowhere close to destroying the first enemy barracks when this bug occurs. Definitely a five star game regardless. Keep up the excellent work. Edit- Running an iPad air, 7.0.6.
Oh I like that it takes 30 minutes to beat a level, looks excellent to me, a lot of time to develop nicely and for mobile its great. But with depth I mean a technology tree who develops the further you get into the campaign. Does it have this?
There are different techs for blocks and weapons you equip your NPC soldiers with. Only one resource type. Heros have multiple abilities, and unlockable heros with different abilities.
No tech tree really, but it's similar to the normal block fortress where there's a shop of new blocks and equipment for your guys which you buy using the money you get from winning missions. Your base does level up during the levels though, as it starts each level at level one and certain weapons and blocks can't be used or equipped until your base is a certain level (there's a progress bar which automatically goes up for when your base levels up) Erm don't know what else to say, it's not like C&C because you don't have direct control over the troops, they just spawn and walk and shoot themselves, You can equip them with stuff but you only control you main guys movement and targeting, and the building of things. Hope this helps.
I don't think it's an unfair score, to be honest (haven't read the review itself though). Really, it's a very simplistic game. Simple RTS mechanics, simple MOBA mechanics, simple tower defense mechanics. I agree with the poster that said this isn't a very deep game, although still fun somewhat. It doesn't come close to Bug Heroes 2, IMO. I like FM games, but this one deserved more time in the oven, I think. Maybe the new endless mode will improve things considerably, we'll see.
It is a complete game, though, right? It has a several hour long campaign. It has multiplayer. It will hae an endless mode with next update and I would assume multiple other game modes and content updates.... Foursaken has already stated and obviously has a track record of updating and tweaking their games. The mechanics to play are simple, yes. There is a layer of strategy though, especially in multiplayer, that you have to figure out. There aren't multiple types of equipment and five different races to choose from for nothing. At its most basic level, you are looking at 15 different ways to play (3 heroes x 5 races) plus shifting those gameplay elements with the equipment available. THEN, how do you use the turrets, blocks, etc. Sure, you could go all out .50 calibers and lvl 3 blocks... but someone who is able to use jetpacks and other tools better than you will wipe the floor with you (I know from experience ) The rapid-react to Foursaken games is always "OH you HAVE to rebalance the Paladin, SOOOO weak" "There is no strategy to Block Fortress!" Then they make some tweaks or a player or three who gets it starts posting and everyone is like "OH, NOW I see it." They've got this
Oh, I absolutely agree they can tweak some things and that would make a big difference. It's kind of moot though, because nobody reviews a game based on future updates. Right now, I don't think it's a very good game (it's decent though), but that can change in the future, sure. The camera also baffles me (both options). I guess they are not used with games that you freely move the camera, but the current set up is unintuitive at best. I don't see a reason why I can't pinch to zoom and twist the fingers to rotate the camera. It's the most intuitive and it's how most isometric games do it. This is something they can easily address in the future, and I hope they do. Really, I'm only complaining because FM already set a high standard with previous games.
The camera isn't an issue for me... It is different, for sure, I agree other players would definitely be interested in different schemes. They said they are going to look into it, which they'll do for sure! I just hope changes they make aren't knee jerk reactions... been watching the developments over on some other game forum's, some games get changed so majorly because a bunch of iOS game nerds complained in a forum Slidetoplay used to change their ratings with updates. That is, in today's gaming world (especially mobile!) The way to do it I think anymore. You have to include some update to a review after a new update comes out. Heroes & Castles changed with Siege mode, the new characters... Deus Ex is suppodely getting another campaign.... Those dynamically change the game format. Maybe I'll start a blog reviewing "Old" mobile games that have went through several updates since their release
This game's making me want to play C&C 3: Kane's Wrath again. That, and I've been playing this game as the Blockbots with Universe At War's music, and holy hell, the tension gets real. Also, is it just me, or do I only seem to get a sense of challenge when I play solo skirmishes on Hard? I swear Medium is too easy for me.
Yeah, I agree the traditional model of reviewing games doesn't work too well for mobile. A lot of games changed dramatically thanks to updates and the reviews don't reflect that.
