I really love Space Invasion and so am intrigued by the just listed game from the same developer, [app]Black Mamba Racer[/app]. However, the single screenshot doesn't exactly draw me in. Also there is currently no info on their website about this game, not even a mention of it. I'm curious if anyone has tried it. I do like the idea of an overhead racing game, but not sure I'm willing to risk $3.99, even though, as I noted, I really like Space Invasion.

Yup. It's hard to trust it based it on that one screenshot. Although, one of my most favorite games from back in the day was Sprint. I'm sure many of you remember that game. This looks like it. I've almost pressed the purchase button twice. But, I think I'm at least going to wait until some video is up on You Tube.

Yeah, a Youtube video would probably sell me on this one. It looks fun in an old-school way, but I don't know how much replay value it'll have.

on button controls (accel, left, right). There's a lot of skidding involved, so it takes some practice to get around corners.

Looks like there are 25 'tracks'. I'm not sure how many different tracks there are. The first track, you just have to do 3 laps. You car takes damage each time you hit something, goes from 100% down to 0%. I assume if you get to 0%, you lose the race. :)

    First race. just 3 laps.

2nd race. You have to beat 4 drone cars. I tried twice and haven't made it through yet.

Not bad. still want to make it further before giving a judgement. will try to get a video up when I can. There are acceleromter based controls, but I had a hard time with it, so I stuck with on screen buttons.

Wow. Slippedy-Slide! You posted that pretty quickly. The game actually looks pretty slick. I know you're a busy guy, but can you post a quick vid with you using the accelerometer? :D

  10. I think I'll wait for it to be cheaper/free (there's always a time when the dev does a special offer down the line).
The graphics look basic- mostly road and grass, with not much in the way of scenery/road side objects. But I was also a little concerned that the other AI racers didn't drift around the corners like the players car. It looked strange with only one car drifting and causing skid marks on the track. The way I see it, with any racer ALL cars should look like they behave the same. Just a couple of little niggles, but still.

    Thanks for the vid Arn.

I have to say I like the game. There's enough skill differentiation that you can get better at the game. The cars in the vid were from the first couple of levels, so not much challenge. I think it ramps up.

Level 5's race track is pretty challenging.

So, overall, this is a win. This sort of 2d racer isn't for everyone, but if you are inclined towards it, I recommend it.

  12. Arn, could you explain how the accelerometer controls work please? And how is the on-screen buttons method better? Thanks.

You still press the on screen button to accelerate, and then you just tilt the screen left and right to turn. Holding it in portrait mode, it's hard to control with that much precision. it's also very sensitive so I found myself spinning out a lot. I didn't practice much as the touch screen controls seemed to be much better. (see video)

I just ran through the first two levels and really like it!
It's got it's own "drifty" feel to it, and the collision/damage elements make this more than just a micro machine clone. (not like that would be a bad thing)

BattleBorn - What's your take on the controls? Do you prefer the accelerometer or the virtual buttons?

I like the touch screen controls very well. it controls exactly like a top-down racer on the NES which many of us will be used to.

I haven't tried the accelerometer controls yet, but I'll let you know whenever I get the chance.

Lemme know if you get past level 5. After the first few tries I felt it was impossible... but then I got pretty close. haven't had a chance to play more today.

Thanks for checking this game out for us! I definitely think I'll be buying it, probably tonight when I get home. It sounds like the developer has done it right again.

I did pick up this game and so far I'm really enjoying it. The first 4 challenges were easy, then the 5th was much harder, but I beat the required time on my 3rd try. I'm now on the 8th challenge. The gameplay is great - sliding your car around the track is super fun. I haven't tried the accelerometer controls, but really you needn't worry about it as the soft-button controls work beautifully. In fact, that's one of the things I like about this game and its developer - they realize that sometimes it's the simplest approach that works best. This game is infinitely more fun then both Cro-Mag and Moto-Chaser, the two accelerometer controlled racing games I have, in part because the controls work so much better here. I'm not "playing the controls", I'm playing the game. I definitely recommend picking this one up.

I'm on challenge 9 now. So far I think challenge 5 was the hardest. It's impossible to use the accelerometer controls but the button controls are good. :)
