yes, i can. crashes when starting a mission. hitting new game or reply level makes it crash...ipad2 owner... bah, was looking forwards to this. they need to upload a fix soon or this will be a very low starred review.
No tutorial but there is a help section. Otherwise, you're dropped right into the fire. The premise is pretty simple-- The game is played on a map divided into rectangular territories. Capturing the flag in a territory gives the player control, which, if memory serves, boosts production speed. If there's a factory, it starts building units for you. Unlike traditional RTS games, you don't have an economy. Factories are on a timer and units are deployed as long as you control them, though you can choose which unit will be built. You want to capture as much territory and destroy the enemy base as quickly as possible. The controls are fairly standard for iOS RTS games. Robots can pick up weapon crates, jump into vehicles and/or man turrets to bolster offense and defense, but the game is basically all about very quickly and effectively mounting an offensive before the AI can take too many territories. Unlike Speedball (different iOS developer, to be fair), the game assets have not gotten any touch-up as far as I can see. Other than some tweaks to the menu and the new control scheme, it's the old PC game, warts and all. If you don't already have fond memories for the game, it's not going to impress visually. Personally I think it's a fairly accurate port, but I'm asking myself if that's enough. It's a 15 year old game and I just don't know if the original execution stands the test of time, especially in terms of user feedback and pacing. For instance, this game screams for rally points, but at least there's a pop-up when units are deployed that quickly scrolls the screen to the appropriate factory
Thanks for the info. I might see if I can dig up a few old reviews before taking a punt. Does look interesting though.
I was a huge fan of the original, but I'm a bit skeptical at how this will play on my iPod. Also starting at $4.99 is pretty steep... How does the game play on the small screen?
I think it's very playable on iPad and was obviously designed with that device in mind. On iPod/iPhone, I hate to say that the experience is compromised. I honestly wish I could tell you otherwise, but there's just not enough situational awareness to give you much opportunity to react in a game that requires quick decisions. To add insult to injury, the mini-map takes up the entire middle 60% of the screen when enlarged on iPod/iPhone, and if it can be repositioned, I haven't figured out how. I think the idea was that you'd bring it up, see which territories are in trouble and click on one to scroll the map, then minimize. I also feel that the front end menus should be redesigned for the smaller devices. Currently, they're smaller versions of the iPad assets, which translates to some tricky hit detection on buttons and tiny text. The usability challenges in bringing the game to the smaller screen were definitely significant and I will give them credit for the fact that UI elements can be turned off to free up space, at least.
Hmm... I'm torn here. On one hand, I loved the old PC game. On the other, this has no improvements at all? A straight port of an ancient game, and it's $5. For now, I'll pass. But I will keep an eye out for sales.
From what I remember on the PC it was fairly dull to be honest: the game always simply involved a race at the start to get the buildings, whoever got the most buildings won later on. Falling behind was not an option. Playing against an AI in this case didn't contribute. I also remember the animations to be very smooth back then, in the video here it looks very choppy or maybe my memory smoothed out the quirks back then. I'll pass until if it gets Game Center multiplayer which I'm a sucker for.
Mine crashed too, on an iPad 1. Found this: http://www.kavcom.co.uk/2011/07/13/the-bitmap-brothers%E2%80%99-z-out-now-on-ipad-and-iphone/ "Please accept my apologies, unfortunately there is a bug which affects people whos device Language Settings arent set to English, French, German, Spanish or Italian. We have fixed this problem and submitted a new build. You should receive notification of an update in the usual way from Apple." I changed my device language to english, and it works now. Until the fix is out, it's a way to enjoy the game
Not there is no improvement but they removed the multiplayer part. This suck. I won't buy it until it's at least like the original game...
I know the pc-version. Is the iOS-Version on an iPad 1 worth it? I just remember that you had to be really quick with the mouse on the pc and that might be the problem with touchscreen control.
Big fan of the original back in the days of my Pentium 133mhz. First day purchase. Haven't tried on the iPad yet, though.

I´ve bought this game 15 years ago, and let me just say it does scale very well on iOS, even on the somewhat small screen of the iPhone. Be aware though that the difficulty setting is hidden in the iOS Settings Menu, you can´t change it in game for some odd reason. It is set to "Easy" per default, so it should be casual friendly.
