Just a quick update: I’m deep into chapter 2 of the story mode and so far the game is excellent. Like Monster Hunter Stories, it takes the Pokémon formula and infused it with a interesting characters, high stakes, and a rich, well- thought out fantasy world — not to mention an excellent, highly tactical combat mechanic. It’s beta, so there are a few rough spots (especially in the tutorial), but even as is, it’s a keeper. It should be noted that even though this is a free-to-play game, the campaign is offline and I’ve barely used the premium currency (which you do get in-game with a surprising frequency). Frankly, it doesn’t play or feel like a free-to-play game. That said, I can’t speak to the post-campaign content or the PVP.
