Played hook champ.... don't really like it. I guess now it's down to Rolando, Spider, Soosiz, and Chop CHop Ninja. I'm looking for challenging, diverse gameplay, with good value. Which is the best with this criteria? All games fortunately seem to have quality production
Maybe it's because it's freshest in my mind, but Chop Chop Ninja is my current favorite among platformers. It has the right mix of challenge, innovative controls (that really work), gameplay variety, humor, and production values. It also has great replay value, as every level has multiple objectives and several possible paths to the ending. I love Soozis, though it can get a bit repetitive; of all the options you're looking at, it's probably the game that most closely approaches console-length. Spider and Rolando 2 have been on my phone for a long time, staring at me, daring me to play them, and I always go for something else instead. Not a knock on the games themselves (I'm sure they're great), but neither has grabbed me by the lapels, slapped my face, and demanded: "Play me now!" Make of that what you will.
I have tried for all possible... but if the rest of CCN is the same difficulty/gameplay as the lite, I don't think it's worth it. The lite was extremely easy, like a basic hack/slash with platforming qualities. I want a more diverse game with interesting/challenging gameplay. THat's why I need opinions of people who have played more into the game, who have insight on the more indepth offerings of the games.
im gonna get the full of chop chop soon, but for now, soosiz. i do think i will LOVE chop chop though so i wont vote yet. and will someone please do a feature of chop chop on the front page?
As you progress through CCN the platforming becomes more challenging, though there's still combat involved. Every level introduces a new aspect to the gameplay -- a new power, a new way to get around, etc. Still, if what you're looking for is a challenge (rather than fun, fast-paced gameplay), I think you're best option is Soozis.
Soosiz is the way to go IMHO. Spider is a very unique and cool game, but I wouldn't really call it a platformer. I have a huge appreciation for it, but it just lacked a bit of the fun factor for me. I'd still buy it again if I didn't have it though. I've only tried the Rolando lite versions but they didn't quite convince me to shell out the money. Plus, they're pricier. Last I saw, Soosiz was on sale for $.99 and I can't imagine not buying it for that price. It's got a lot of gameplay and is pretty challenging at times. As with the Rolandos, I have only tried the lite version of Hook Champ. I wasn't in love with it but I may end up buying it someday. I'll probably wait for a sale though (as I'm doing with most games at the moment, given that I expect some post-Christmas pricedrops in the near future given the masses of people that are itching to spend their itunes giftcards.
I couldn't really get into Soosiz because after a while of gameplay it made me dizzy/nauseated. Gomi has the same affect on me.
I know I'm in the minority, but Bounce On is my favorite platformer. It's a really traditional platformer, but has some device specific controls that just work perfectly. It has 5 worlds with tons of levels each, and each level has different goals for bronze silver and gold that give it insane replayability. Plus, online leaderboards if you want to compete for the fastest times. Also it has cool powerups (think the suits from Mario 3). For the money, on sale for $2, IMO it's the best bang for the buck. Slight learning curve with the controls, but once you get them it's like second nature. Soosiz is probably a close second, it's simple and controls work well. It's also a very traditional Mario-esque platformer, but it does tend to get a little repetitive. Really fun, though, and only $1 right now it's a good purchase. The Rolando's are great, it took me a while to discover how good they really are, but once you're hooked you're REALLY hooked. But, they're more of like puzzle games IMO, just with platform elements. Still great though. I have Plushed and although I haven't gotten very far yet, I'm enjoying it. It has really charming graphics and animation, but it does seem a little slow paced. Seems worth the money so far but I need to play a little more. Hook Champ is probably my favorite game on that entire list, but I really wouldn't call it a platformer. It's more like Bionic Commando without shooting. Just focusing on swinging through the level and getting the best score. Fun as hell though!! And it has a ton of content and items to collect. The dev is awesome and they have added a ton to this game over the last couple months, including tons of awesome OpenFeint stuff. This would be one of my most recommended games out of everything on the devices, it's that good. This is blasphemy, but I don't own Spider. I'm ashamed of myself. But also, I don't think it quite falls into the platformer category. Other than what you mention, Earthworm Jim, Mega Man II, and Ghosts n Goblins are good platform/shooters. Also, it's sort of it's own kind of platformer, but Sway should definitely be in the mix too if you don't own it already. I'm checking out CCN right now, too. Thanks YPR I had missed that one.
Thanks a whole bunch! That's really helpful... think I'm leaning towards getting Soosiz and Rolando... I, too, think that Bounce On has great gameplay, but i HATE the fact that you just control a plain ball... I would love it if it had a face or something... lol it's kind of strange but that's the reason i don't want it
It's the main reason why I voted Hook Champ. Spider is by far more beautiful graphics wise and very unique but sadly (for me, I cant talk speak for anyone else) once i beat the game; that was that. I found all the secrets on my first play through. i really take my time to enjoy games and search every corner. I felt I had no reason to play it over. For me it lacked replayability. I beat the game in several sessions averaging 1 to 2 hours at a time.
You're welcome I understand what you're saying. The Bounce On ball does have a little face, little eyebrows and eyes, but not a TON of personality. He's pretty cute though and you do end up endearing yourself to his plight. And the game gets about 200x better from the second world on. It's different now because they updated world 1 with snazzier graphics, so it sort of matches the rest of the worlds, but each world was added in succession over time. At first it was just world 1 which was cute but sort of plain. With each world they added, you could tell they stepped everything up a notch and used what they'd learned from the previous worlds. It's a very evolutionary game. Once you see world 5, you know you'll be in for a treat from the sequel. Soosiz and Rolando are very good choices, you should enjoy them. And they ARE working on a Bounce On 2 right now, which will probably be bigger and better in every way. Just who knows when that will ever come out.
I'm going to give it to Archibald's adventures even though I love most of the games on the list. The game is just packed with so many levels and the creator just gives more away through free updates which is a great feeling I choose Spider out of the games listed though. Most of those games borrow elements from existing games (which is not a bad thing at all) but Spider is the one rare iphone game that feels like the iphone was made for the game and not the other way around. The polish, the art, the controls, everything. That's a testament of how awesome the game is
