I've been using the VLC player since it came out, but as you all know by now it has been discontinued due to licensing issues. Even so, the player isn't capable of playing files of a larger resolution than 480p (I haven't been able to play a 720p video smoothly anyway). I don't know much about file formats or video codex, but I would like a player that can run my 720p videos smoothly, eg: TRON Legacy. 720p x264. AC3 5.1. 1.6 Gb. .mkv format. OR Traffic. 720p x264. AC3 2.1. 1.4 Gb. .mp4 format. Is this possible? Is there a good mediaplayer out there for iOS devices that can handle 720p videos? Thanks for any replies! /Ajx
Have you tried using the the iPod app to run the MP4 file yet? It should work. If you've got a bunch of movies in different formats I suggest converting them to MP4 files or using AirVideo to stream them.
It does not work. And the whole reason why I want to be able to view them is because I travel a lot (2 hours every day total) and want to be able to watch something while on the train.
Tron Legacy isn't out yet and if that were true the files would all be in the same format, wouldn't they? I mean, you don't just decide to rip and encode movies in multiple random formats. Convert the files, I use video monkey but I'm sure there's a good free converter for windows that does the same thing. Better yet, use the digital copy that came with your copy of Tron Legacy since you own the original, right?
I convert my own files I have never changed my technique since my psp days I'm still using a converter called xvid4psp which is a free converter that is using x264 it's quite slow but the end quality is easily as good as anything apple sells and the filesizes are much better. There are a ton of far faster commercial converters but these use mpeg4 and the end quality and sizes suffers quite badly. I also have VLC and Buzz player on mine but sadly VLC was the best of the two although buzz player I still have found useful to drag over other types of files like radio shows or higher quality mp3's. Truthfully right now I think VLC is as good as it gets and you are probably lucky you got a copy beforehand.
Hey maybe he got a pre-release copy of Tron Legacy and whenever he decides to rip one of his Blu Rays he rolls a d8 and chooses a random codec based on the result? That's plausible, right?
My dad is the one doing the converting. He is the computer genius in our family. I don't know what version of Tron we have but I'm holding the disk in my hand? Here's a picture if you still don't believe me: http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/4817/img0254js.jpg And.. there is no digital copy on that disc? I plug it into my computer and it can't even read it. What about AVPlayer? is it any good?
If your dad somehow works close enough to the movie industry to get pre-release copies, you probably shouldn't be posting having them on the internet, much less ripping them. That's a pretty easy way to become unemployed.
Why are you talking about my dad? I was just asking about a good mediaplayer for iphone 4? Only reason he has them on his computer is that we can have them shared in our whole house. I can watch a movie on my tv and they can watch another downstairs without changing disks or moving computers around.
If it's a big problem to reply just ignore that I ever mentioned Tron. I got a copy of 2012 as well (fairly new movie). 720p, H264 AC3 1.7 Gbyte .mp4 format. Picture that I own the copy: http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/5747/img0255g.jpg Any iPhone 4 mediaplayer that can run this file smoothly?
Pay no attention to Hodapp. Someone had to fill in for the most notorious troll TA has ever seen (kijib). <3 I can't help you with the topic at hand though. My apologies.
Just a thought maybe air video might make a decent compromise I've been thinking about getting this myself to save me from encoding and it seems quite popular. I'm sure media players will improve as the cpus do though so maybe iphone /ipod 5 or even the current ipad 2 can handle these type of high bitrate files much better.
Need it for my train rides. Don't have a stable WiFi or 3G connection for AirPlay, and don't want my computer to be on or run the whole day. And the iPhone 4 can handle HD videos from iTunes just fine, so it seems weird it cant handle other ones.
I have AvPlayer, works just like VLC but it also does TVOut without jailbreaking, havent had a problem with it yet. You can also wifi files instead of syncing. I think it was $2.99. I was using CineXPlayer before but some features are broken and it doesn't read all files.
I bought AVPlayer yesterday and it's performing better than VLC. The .mkv and bigger resolution .mp4 files just lagged on VLC showing every 20th or 50th frame, while in AVPlayer the image just lags behind every 3 or 4 seconds. The playback is far from smooth, but it's manageable (at least you can watch the movie/film/show). Still, if there is any other player out there which performs better, please let me know!
