Because Blue Skies, while part of the shooter genre alongside shmups, is not itself a shmup. Shmups are defined as either vertically or horizontally forced scrolling games in which shooting combat is the primary focus. Shooting combat is the primary focus in Blue Skies as well, but it isn't forced scrolling. It's a multidirectional shooter. Different subgenre. The more you know. *makes rainbow motion with arm
Been playing Phull (hori shmup) lately. It's pretty good. Space Deadbeef is great. I'd stay away from Sky Thunder for now. It's good, but the controls still stutter. I think it's more due to lack of animation frames than the controls themselves. The ship stutters around the screen. Sentry Alpha is damned good. Still, the best shmup on these devices is still rRootage.
phull is very good. platypus and space deadbeef are also great. is radio flare worth the money? it seems fun
I know this is an old thread, but I just got my iPhone and I'm wondering what shmups I should get. I tried Space Invaders Infinity Gene, but that didn't do it for me. What else should I have in my collection? (Orbital Defence looks promising, but isn't out yet.).
This is thread is in the wrong section -- but that's not your fault, since you didn't create it, just bumped it. That said, my favorite shmup right now is SkySmash 1918. It's beautifully made and pretty intense. By the way, you'll find a lot of love for SIIG around these parts, but I understand that it's not for everyone -- you really have to have some appreciation for old-school gaming to really get it. Oh, and welcome to the forums!
I'm surprised no no one mentioned Tyrian in this thread unless this thread came before that came out. Tyrian is the only game that has stayed on my front page constantly since I purchased it. I think it is the absolute best shmup on the iphone.

No-one mentioned it because it hadn't been released when all but one post was made in this thread. But, yeah, everything else kind of pales next to Espgaluda- nothing else has such a deep scoring system. Do like Sky Force Reloaded a lot though, very tight controls, even if the scoring is pretty simplistic.

Sky Combat by chillingo is one of the worst i've played so stay away from that..
I really enjoy assault squadron but after level 4 it gets pretty hard unless I use the first plane (out of the 3 available, anyone know how to unlock the fourth?) I'll check out pheonix.. looks decent!
